History, Nature and Wonder Await you in Arizona

Saturday, November 25th, 2006

Out west there is a place that words and pictures can only begin to describe. The awesome landscape, the breathtaking view of the open space that spreads out before you is something that we should all strive to see at least once in our lifetime. I’m talking about the Grand Canyon in Arizona.

The first time someone visits in the Grand Canyon they can truly appreciate the vastness and wonder of it all. You can enjoy the view from above or go on a guided excursion down in the canyon. The best way to experience it is to do both.

Once you are in Arizona, there are plenty of other things that you need to do as well. If you are a golfer, you need to head to Scottsdale, Arizona and play a few rounds. There are over 300 golf courses all over the state, but Scottsdale is well known for its golf.

Rich in Native American culture, while in Arizona you can visit with different tribes to learn about their history and customs. Local artist make everything from pottery to rugs to woven baskets. At different times of the year you can also experience festivals and special events put on by different tribes.

If you like nature and being outside, then Arizona will not disappoint you. There is hiking, biking, canoeing and horseback riding among other things. Even though Arizona is known for hot weather, it is not humid, so many people find it very tolerable all year round for outdoor activities. It has become a favorite vacation place for those wishing to escape the cold of winter.

One of the favorite activities for many people to do is to just get in the car and drive to explore every nook and cranny of the state. There is the beauty of the dessert as well as lush, green places alive with vibrant colorful flowers. When on the road, you can feel the vastness of the state as a country drive can mean not seeing a car for a good period of time. Don’t forget your map!

Arizona is a great place to go for a family friendly vacation as well as a romantic getaway. From the beauty of the Grand Canyon to the abundance of nature to the rich history of the state, there is something for everyone waiting in Arizona.

Getting to the Gate on Time

Saturday, November 25th, 2006

Have you ever run through the airport? I have and let me tell you, it is not something that I want to do any more than what I have to. I have been ushered out of line at the airport and rushed down to security because the line was so long and so slow that I was going to miss my flight. There are times when all of us are running a little further behind than what we want to be running but there are ways to shave some precious minutes off of the wait at the airport. Here are some tips that will help to get you from your car to the gate in the shortest time possible.

1. Online Check In – One thing that you should take advantage of is the online check in that many of the airlines now offer. Although you have to do this within about 24 hours of your flight it will help you to make the trip from the car down to security much faster. They have kiosks inside the airport set up for those of you that have taken advantage of online flight check in and you can also use one of the porters that are outside and will take your bags and check you in. The lines outside are generally much shorter and move a lot faster than the lines inside. Just make sure that you tip the porter for his trouble.

2. Prepare for Security – Don’t wait until you are in line at the security check point to prepare. You should walk into that line already prepared to go straight through. Some of the things that you can do to speed up the process is have your cell phone and any other objects in your pocket stored in your carry on bag, wear shoes that are easy to take on and off, be ready to take out your video camera and laptop and place them in a separate bin and have your ticket and id ready for inspection.

By keeping these two things in mind when preparing for a trip to the airport you will help to speed up the time it take you to get to the gate. This will give you extra time to sit and relax with a cup of coffee or whatever you like, or if you are running late it will help you not to miss your flight.

Different Business Ideas That Work

Saturday, November 25th, 2006

A lot of people want to be in business for themselves. It gives you a level of freedom that you generally don’t get to enjoy if you are working for someone else. I mean, let’s face it, if you are working for someone else you are lining their pockets with gold while you are eating dirt in most cases. Perhaps you want to go into business for yourself because it allows you a greater amount of freedom to decide when and where you are going to work and that gives you more time for the more important things in life like spending time with your family. But what are you going to do for a living so that you can make ends meet? Well if you are willing to live a simple life then you can get by on really working only about 20 hours a week more or less. I’ve done it for years. Here are some of the things that I’ve done to help pay the bills.

1. Start a cleaning business – Yes it might not be all that glamorous but it does pay well. I’ve done office cleaning and floors for grocery stores for years. The work is generally done at night so that is a consideration but it pays well and it gives you time to yourself while you are cleaning.

2. Work with apartment communities – Are you handy? If you are you can get some work helping out with the maintenance department at one of the local apartment communities. This pays well, depending on what you charge of course, and is a great way to earn some money. Generally you will have more work than what you can handle if you are good at what you do.

3. Wash some Windows – Window washing is enjoyable and profitable. If you land a few businesses with monthly accounts you can end up earning a fair amount of money. Try looking at some of the local car dealerships for work because they tend to have a lot of windows

How to Get the Most out of Your Disney Timeshare Points

Friday, November 24th, 2006

One of my favorite timeshares that I own is the Disney Vacation Club timeshare points. I own a few other timeshares as well, one in the Caribbean and another in Hawaii, but I don’t always take advantage of those timeshares because they make me take a week’s vacation at a time. Now I do love to get away and I tend to go away often but taking a week away someplace where I am out of touch for an entire week really is a difficult thing for me to do. That is why I enjoy the points system so much when it comes to timeshares because you don’t need to take an entire week at a time and since I live in Florida it is a great thing for me to just pick up and go on a quick one or two day getaway at one of the Disney properties whenever I want. But you still need to make your points go as far as you can, here are some tips to help you to make them work better for you.

1. Weekdays rule, weekends drool – If you really want to make your vacation points last a long time you need to drop the weekend and holiday trips. I have 250 points to use throughout the year and I take advantage of every opportunity to go away but I do not use them on the weekends if I can avoid it. The points tend to rise sharply on the weekends and I can go twice as many days if I make them a weekday getaway. Some friends of ours use their points for going away for a week at Labor Day. It takes a lot of their points away for the year and they aren’t able to go away as often.

2. Shop Around a Little – Different Disney properties charge different amounts of points at times and at different times of the year. If you are going to go to Disney on vacation for a day or two and you can stay for a few points less at the Wilderness Villas than you could if you stayed at the Disney Boardwalk why not take advantage of the lower points price. If you spend the days in the park you can still enjoy the comfort of the Disney room at night and if you like hanging out at the Boardwalk take a bus over there and spend some time.

Yes, sometimes it takes a little creativity to make your Disney Timeshare points go a little further but in the end it is well worth the effort.

Alaska Offers Adventure, Beauty and Nature for Visitors Year Round

Thursday, November 23rd, 2006

If you are looking for a place to vacation with almost unparallel beauty, where nature abounds and where there is still untouched land waiting to be explored, then Alaska is calling your name. From the land or from a cruise ship, visiting and taking in the sites and sounds of Alaska creates memories that last a life time.

When some people think of Alaska, they automatically think of cold weather and the very short or very long days that are experienced in this remote state. Yes, of course it is cooler than say, Southern Florida, but there are plenty of times a year where the weather is bearable. So, if you don’t like to freeze, you can still find times to visit Alaska where a sweater or light jacket will suffice.

One of the best ways to experience Alaska is to take an Alaskan cruise. This way you can enjoy the spectacular scenery from the water and from close up when you stop at your various ports of call. To truly realize the size of an ice burg or the natural beauty of this state, a cruise is the way to go. You have the luxury and comfort of the cruise ship and still get to explore different cities and villages.

Don’t forget to bring your camera! You will know what I mean once you get there. You might never experience anything as awesome as what you see here. From whale watching in the ocean to the local customs you will experience in towns such as Anchorage or Nome, a camera will help capture your memories.

Consider staying at a bed and breakfast to get to know some of the locals. There are nature hikes available as well as fishing excursions and day cruises. You can’t leave without purchasing some of the many local crafts available. Ask locals for good places to eat. There might be a restaurant or pub not listed in your tourist information that will give you a taste of the local cuisine.

Grab your camera, grab your coat and get your Alaskan vacation booked. Once you head there one time, it will call you back again and again. Many of those who live there will tell you that they just came to visit, felt like they had found their home and new that they could never leave the beauty of Alaska.

Making the Most of your Overseas Flight

Thursday, November 23rd, 2006

Have you ever been on a flight that crosses an ocean? The time can be very hard spent, especially if you are not prepared for all the possibilities of the flight. I know that on a recent flight from the USA to England I was prepared in the ways that I’m about to tell you. It helped to make the flight go along as smoothly as possible, at least in ways that I had control over, and the time that I spent on the flight was at times relaxing and at other times was productive. Here are some tips to help you with your overseas flight.

1. Prepare Your Bag well – There are things that you should carry on with you in a smaller bag that you can keep at your seat. These should include some good noise canceling headphones, a pad and pencil in case you have a thought that you need to remember, spare batteries for your headset, a crossword puzzle book and a book to read.

2. Pack an Extra Seat – Sitting for hours and hours can be hard on the backside. Make sure that you have an extra seat packet (or use an airplane pillow if you forget). Starting your trip with a sore backside is no way to go.

3. Book an Extra Seat – If you are traveling with someone else try booking your seats one apart from each other. Sometimes the seat in between the two of you will not be filled and you will have a little more elbow room.

Just keep these few things in mind and you will make your flight experience a more pleasant one. Don’t overlook the power naps that can be taken to help you be fresher when you arrive. That way you will have a smoother transition with your flight lands.

Credit Tricks and Tips That You Need to KnowCredit Tricks and Tips That You Need to Know

Thursday, November 23rd, 2006

Everyone seems to use credit these days. It goes without saying that most of us get a flood of mail on a regular basis with different credit card offers. Sometimes we also get offers on existing credit cards that we might want to take advantage of. For example, if you have a credit card with a local furniture store you will probably get an offer from time to time to get interest free financing for several years. Right now I have a coupon from a home improvement store offering me 10% off and no interest or payments for 6 months. That sounds great, doesn’t it? Well there is trouble lurking below the surface. It could end up costing you a lot more than what you think that it is going to because the credit card companies aren’t expecting you to look at the fine print. Here is the fine print that you are missing.

These special deals look great on the surface but did you know that if you do not pay off the full balance of the charge within the allotted time that you are hit with back interest since the start of the charge? This can get quite expensive, especially since a lot of those cards charge a high interest rate. So if you are going to take advantage of this type of offer you really need to be disciplined in your payments so that you make sure that it is paid in full before the grace period expires. Something else that may happen is that you decide to pay the bill in full on the last month of the grace period they may do something a little tricky. I know people that have done this and the credit card company does not acknowledge that they sent in the payment until after the grace period ended. Of course not all credit card companies will do this but just to be on the safe side I usually send in that last payment with a signature required.

Whenever you are using credit you always need to be cautious, but at the same time if you are able to be disciplined you can really take advantage of some great offers. Just be cautious and informed and you will be fine.

Pay Your Mortgage on Time

Thursday, November 23rd, 2006

All of us have trouble getting along financially from time to time. There may be a reason behind it that is simple to identify such as losing your job or having a lot of hospital bills come up unexpectedly, but no matter how much trouble that you are having there are certain things that you should never do if it is at all possible, and one of those things is paying your mortgage on time. Here is why you should worry about your mortgage before you worry about any other bill.

Having a mortgage late on your credit report is one of the worst things that you can have happen. It sticks with your credit report for a long time and if you ever need to refinance your home or get another mortgage this will be something that will make it much more difficult. Of course you never want to have any late payments show up on your credit report but having a late mortgage payment is by far the worst that you can do.

So protect your credit and make sure that you are paying your mortgage on time. Take a good look at your mortgage bill see if they have a grace period where you may be able to buy a little extra time before you are actually late. That might help you to make your payment on time as well even though it may not be on the actual due date. Keeping a clean credit report is very important for many reasons. If you are having problems, figure out how to start keeping it clean from this point on, and if your credit report is clean already make sure that you keep it that way. A clean credit report will follow you through your life and help you to get more of what you need.

The Art of Wearing Big Earrings

Wednesday, November 22nd, 2006

For the longest time, we were told that big earrings were gaudy, out of style, out dated and over rated among other things. The thought over wearing hoops as big as tennis balls was just not something that we even thought of. Well ladies, that trend has turned and bigger is considered better in the jewelry world these days.

Working in the fashion world, I always try to keep up with the latest list of dos and don’ts and to stay a step ahead in my wardrobe and accessories. About a year or so ago, I began to notice that trend in jewelry to shift from small and dainty to big and bold. I began to shift with it. My silver bracelets were bigger, my rings were wide enough at the top for two fingers and my necklaces practically covered my whole neck. For some reason it took me awhile to turn myself over to big earrings.

May big earrings make me think of the 80s, and who wants to go back to the days of 80s fashion faux pas? So, I started slowly with big silver hoops. Once I put them on I wore them every day for about two weeks. If you look at all the stars, what do you see? Big earrings, specifically big hoops. JLo, Beyonce, Jessica Simpson and Lindsay Lohan are just a few of the many people who have jumped on the big earring band wagon and made it what it has become today.

I get questions from many people regarding what kind of style looks best with big earrings. I have one friend who feels she can’t wear them because she has short hair and one who doesn’t wear them because she has long hair. The beauty of big earrings is that anybody can wear them. Short hair, long hair, petite women and curvy gals all look good with big earrings. They are one size fits all. Short hair shows off the earrings and long hair allows you to catch a glimpse of them. Those of you with long hair should appreciate big earrings because if you wear small earrings such as small diamond studs or tiny hoops, nobody can see them.

If you still haven’t bought a pair of big earrings, the time has come. All you have to have is a little attitude, because a little goes a long way. Big earrings are the one size fits all piece of jewelry that we all most embrace in today’s fashion world.

Tips for Making a Pregnancy Scrapbook

Wednesday, November 22nd, 2006

The day that we found out we were pregnant was one of the happiest days of my life. I wanted to record everything that happened during my pregnancy and decided that the best way to do this was to put together a pregnancy scrapbook and journal on a regular basis. There are many ways to do a pregnancy scrapbook, but I wanted to share what I did.

The first few pages of my pregnancy scrapbook, I talked about how we found out we were pregnant and how we felt. I also have included the “we’re pregnant” pictures taken by a cousin. These pictures are very special as they were taken the day after we found out, but nobody knows yet so they thought we just wanted some pictures taken together.

The next few pages are all about how we told friends and family. I included pictures in there including some priceless pictures of my Mother-in-law’s reaction that could not be recaptured in a million years. We told different people in different ways and it is fun to read about all of this just 3 years after we told them.

I devoted a whole section in the pregnancy scrapbook for baby items and things we bought. This includes pictures of the bedding, crib and paint samples from the room. I also included baby registry information as well as some cute gift cards we received from various people.

About one month into my pregnancy scrapbook, it became a twin scrapbook as we discovered we were having twins. I found some awesome twin scrapbook items online that I have never seen in the stores. Twin scrapbook paper and embellishments are not always easy to come by.

Every pregnancy scrapbook needs information and pictures from baby showers. Since the twins came early, my baby showers all occurred after they got here, so they are at some of the showers too, which is great because I have some awesome photos of them with friends and relatives oohing and ahhing over them.

The largest part of my pregnancy scrapbook centers around the pregnancy and growth of the babies. Every week I would journal about not only changes in me, but what they were doing according to pregnancy books I purchased. I also wrote information about their current size and included a sticker or diecut that was approximately that same size for reference. Every month I took a picture of my growing belly to include in the book too.

These are just a few suggestions for putting together a pregnancy scrapbook. There are plenty of other ideas online. Have fun personalizing your scrapbook. It is a treasured album full of memories for you and for you to share with your children in the future.

Protect Your Credit Score

Wednesday, November 22nd, 2006

There are so many people out there that do not have good credit. Perhaps you struggle to pay your bills and when you try to get a credit card somewhere you have the embarrassment of being turned down. There is a reason for this. Everything that you do with your credit is recorded over time and if you do one thing wrong it becomes a part of your record for years. Here is how you can protect your credit and make sure that you have a credit score that you can be proud of.

1. Pay your bills on time. If you are paying your bills late, usually 30 days late, it will become a part of your credit rating. Negative hits on your credit report because of late pays bring your score down in a hurry and it doesn’t recover quickly.

2. Don’t max out those cards. Try to keep your open credit lines under 50% of their maximum credit limit. If you have your cards maxed out it will negatively impact your credit score. You will want to have plenty of open credit lines but having too many can bring your score down as well.

3. Avoid multiple hits on your credit report. When you go out to find a home or a car they will often shop your loan and each time they shop it they will pull your credit multiple times. This is a bad thing because when you have credit pulls it will drop your score and will take some time to recover.

Keep these things in mind when you are thinking about your credit score. If you take care of your credit it will really take care of you.

Be Choosy With Your Timeshare

Wednesday, November 22nd, 2006

There are a lot of reasons why someone would sit through a timeshare presentation. One of the most important of those reasons is that you can get a lot of really cool discounts on your vacation if you allow them to pitch the timeshare with you. The only problem is that a lot of people end up walking out of there owning a timeshare that they really don’t want. The good news is that you really would like a timeshare, but you may not want the one that they are pitching to you. Here is how you can make sure that you choose the right timeshare for you and your family.

Timeshares come in two basic types, the ones that give you a week of time and another that uses a points system. If you are the type of person who enjoys taking a week long vacation no matter what they the week long type will work well for you. If you like breaking your vacation up into smaller getaways then go for the points. You should also look at where you are buying. If you buy in someplace like Hawaii, and make sure that it is a very highly rated timeshare you will have a much better chance of being able to trade your timeshare if you want to swap weeks.

Keep these two things in mind when you sit through the timeshare presentation. By making sure that you are getting what you want before you go into the meeting you will make sure that you don’t walk out with something that you don’t want.

Don’t Pay Full Price for College Textbooks

Tuesday, November 21st, 2006

When you go to college there are so many things that you have to pay for besides just your tuition. You have to think about rent or money for a dorm room, food and gas among other things. One of the more expensive things that you have to purchase are college textbooks.

The price of new college textbooks is relatively high in most cases. They range anywhere from around $50 to well over $400 depending on the class and college you attend. With these high prices, you almost have to look for a deal or you will be forced to eat peanut butter the whole semester.

Fortunately there are a number of things that you can do to help cut the costs on college textbooks. The first thing you can do is to scout the bookstores for used textbooks. Unless it is a completely new book, you should be able to find used college textbooks for a fraction of the price of the new books. If you don’t plan on ever using that book again, this is a good option for you.

If you have a friend who plans on taking the class, consider buying the book together. This works particularly well if you are going to take the class in different semesters so you don’t have to worry about ever needing the book at the same time.

Check message boards around school to see if other students have used textbooks to sell. Some students opt to sell their books themselves because they will make more money than they would just having the bookstore buy them back.

With all the options available to you, there is no need to ever pay full price for college textbooks. You might have to search for a good deal, but a little bit of time spent searching in the beginning can save you a lot in the end.

Don’t Miss Your Flight

Tuesday, November 21st, 2006

It was on a fall day not too long ago when I was about ready to make a trip from Dulles in Washington DC to Heathrow airport in London. I was flying on one carrier from Dulles to JFK and then another on the second leg to Heathrow. Since I got to the airport early I decided to walk around to keep myself occupied and then I went down to the gate about an hour before takeoff and proceeded to fall asleep right there at the gate. When I finally woke up everyone was gone and the plane was still sitting at the gate. They wouldn’t leave me on the plane because they had already closed the doors. I began to panic.

While standing in line at the customer service desk I started to notice a common thread among all of the people that were being helped, they were all irate and were not getting anywhere. I decided to take a different course and to be as nice as I possibly could. Let me tell you something, it worked better than I ever thought it could.

At first they were saying that I would have to pay an additional $1,100 to get to Heathrow and they weren’t flexible because it was an international flight. Well I smooth talked to the customer service rep until she got me on a second flight (standby) to JFK. Then it was up to the other airline to help me get the rest of the way. I thought there wasn’t a chance, but by being calm and nice and asking the person behind the desk for a little leniency I ended up getting on a flight that was only 4 hours behind my original flight… for free. The moral of the story is you can catch more flies with honey than you can with vinegar, especially in the airport.

When to Seek Help from a Fertility Clinic

Tuesday, November 21st, 2006

Anyone who has tried for months or even years to get pregnant knows the heartache and frustration you experience month after month as you find out you have not gotten pregnant. During this time you often get unsolicited and unhelpful advice. When is it time to get a professional opinion? When should you seek help from a fertility clinic?

The answer to this actually varies from clinic to clinic as well as from couple to couple. Most clinics agree that if you have been actively trying to get pregnant for six months to a year without success, it is time to get a consultation and some basic testing done by our OB/GYN or by a fertility doctor. Some couples feel as though this is not enough time and they want to keep trying whereas other couples might be ready earlier because of family history or a medical condition.

One thing that you can do during the time that you are trying to decide whether or not to go to a fertility clinic is to chart your cycle. Many clinics will actually ask that you do this for at least three months to establish a pattern anyway, so if you have already done this you are a step ahead. You can download charts online to help you chart your basal body temperature and you can find a BBT thermometer at any drug store. For some people this simple act of charting your cycle can give a doctor a good idea of what the route of the problem is.

If you feel that you are ready to consult a fertility doctor, ask around and do research. There are some good, reputable doctors who are there to help you and other not so reputable doctors who are just in it for the money and the statistics. If you have a local fertility support group or adoption agency in your area, they might be able to point you in the right direction. If you feel unsure about a diagnosis, get a second one from a different fertility clinic. This is your body, your family and your future and you should feel comfortable before proceeding with any fertility procedures.

The Glitter of Diamond Cut Gold Jewelry

Tuesday, November 21st, 2006

I’ve heard it said that all that glitters isn’t gold. This might be true, but I wonder if the quote would have been different if this person would have had the opportunity to wear some diamond cut gold jewelry.

There is nothing like the look of light hitting diamond cut gold jewelry. I remember the first time that I saw a diamond cut gold piece. It was a fourteen carat gold necklace with matching earrings. I was in the shopping mode and wanted something unique. There it was, the perfect piece starting up at me from the case.

At first glance, a piece of gold jewelry that has been diamond cut may appear to have gemstones in it. In fact a true, quality piece of diamond cut jewelry is actually cut to mimic the way light plays of diamonds or other cut stones. They are designed to have the look of expensive diamond jewelry without the price, all the glitter at a fraction of the cost.

Gold jewelry has a rich tone to it to begin with. When you add the diamond cuts you are often just enhancing its beauty. Diamond cuts also enhance the beauty of white gold jewelry and silver jewelry. The facets cut into the gold, when done by a professional jeweler, are cut in such a way to refract light no matter which way the jewelry is turned.

Beware of diamond cut jewelry that is poorly cut. These pieces often appear dull and the cuts are uneven (some large and some small) making the jewelry look cheap. It is best to buy diamond cut jewelry in person or from a reputable dealer to avoid making a bad purchase.

If you want a piece of jewelry with some sparkle, but don’t want the expensive price that comes with diamond jewelry, look for diamond cut jewelry. Necklaces, earring, bracelets and other items can all be diamond cut. All that glitters might not be gold, but diamond cut gold has a lot of glitter to give.

How to Preserve your Memories in a Wedding Scrapbook

Tuesday, November 21st, 2006

Whether you have just recently celebrated your wedding or you have just found the time to be able to scrapbook, creating a wedding scrapbook is a great way to preserve the memories of the day. However, taking on the task of scrapbooking your wedding can seem overwhelming. There are some things that you can do to take the stress and pressure that you might feel out of creating the scrapbook.

One thing you can do is to keep it simple. We all love scrapbook pages that are full of embellishments such as stickers or die cuts. However, if you have hundreds of photos to work with, it might be better to let the pictures do the talking. Instead of concentrating on embellishments, journal about the day on your pages. Journaling helps you to capture how you felt, special moments and amusing or unplanned events that happened during the day.

You can also break up the wedding and events surrounding the wedding into different albums. This helps you concentrate on one thing at a time. For instance, I have a shower and rehearsal album, a wedding album, a reception album and a honeymoon album. We had about 15 disposable cameras sitting around at the reception, so that is why I chose to do it separately from the rest. I also have a miscellaneous album that is filled with pictures that other people gave me after I had already completed my albums. This way I don’t have to worry about adding pages to the other albums.

If you must give a wedding scrapbook to your parents, keep those simple as well. They don’t need all the pictures. Just choose those that you think are the best or that would mean something special to them. This will probably mean using different pictures for each set of parents.

Creating a wedding scrapbook for friends and family members who are getting married is also an excellent idea. I recently did this for a friend. In addition to pictures and memos, I had everyone put their wishes for the bride and groom on acid free paper to add to the back of the scrapbook.

However you choose to create your wedding scrapbook, it should be fun, not stressful. You should enjoy reliving the day as you scrapbook instead of feeling overwhelmed at the pile of pictures laid out before you. You have already created the memories, the scrapbook is just a way for you to share them with others and to enjoy seeing them for years to come.

Camping is for the Birds

Tuesday, November 21st, 2006

Are you someone that loves getting away from it all? I know that when I was growing up my family didn’t take the traditional vacation getaways, we had a camper and we traveled almost every weekend during the warm months to a local campground and spend a couple of nights. Sometimes we would even go away for a week or more at a time and really enjoy ourselves. We had a group that we traveled with and they all took their own campers and their children played with us for the weekend, it was always great fun.

One of the things that I really enjoyed about camping is that you got to be around the great outdoors and all the wildlife that it held. Often on our camping trips I would find myself hiking along a mountain stream looking at the little critters and hoping for a chance to see something like a deer or a turkey. One thing that I always found fascinating in the things that I saw was the wide variety of birds that were there. It was always a treat to see them flying around so busy and to hear them sing through the forest. It shaped a part of my life that I really love and that I, even today, take a part in on a regular basis… bird watching.

So if you love birds, and you enjoy being outdoors in the peace and quiet then go camping and enjoy the time alone. There really isn’t anything like the experience of camping to help you unwind and reflect on all that life holds for us. And take a less from the birds that you see, and how carefree they really are. Camping will help restore your tired soul and is a great way to get close to nature.

Living Through the Timeshare Presentation

Tuesday, November 21st, 2006

If you go on a vacation to someplace exotic there is a good possibility that you will be lured into a timeshare presentation. They will give you a lot of good reasons to sit through their speech and often they will offer you something that sounds good enough for you to bite. I know that for my wife and I we have sat through our fair share of timeshare presentations and we have even ended up buying a few, but what can you do to make sure that you don’t buy, especially if you aren’t in a position to buy?

Sometimes when we go on vacation we are able to get a great rate on our room or vacation package because we are willing to sit through the timeshare presentation. This is completely understandable. They are in a position to make a lot of money with your timeshare purchase and you are able to save a lot of money on your vacation by being willing to sit through the presentation. The danger comes in because they are in a position to win the struggle of averages. A considerable number of people that are willing to sit through the presentation and do not want to buy will end up buying because they are very good at presenting their side of the argument. That is how they make their money, so you need to be prepared not to purchase from the start. Make sure that you even tell them (although they have heard it before) that you are just there to get the discount, and when they get to the sales part you will be ready to tell them no right away.

Of course once you get beyond that hurdle you are not really done. Another sales person, usually in a higher position will come out to give you an offer that you can’t refuse. This is a dangerous place for you to be in because they will give you a good offer and you will recognize it. But add it up in your head and realize that you will be making those monthly payments for years, perhaps even after your circumstances change and you aren’t able to take advantage of the timeshare vacation.

So before you take them up on the vacation discount make sure you have resolved in your mind exactly what the outcome will be and stick to it. Even if the pressure gets heavy you need to stick to your word and let it be no. If, of course, you find that it is something that you really want then you should go for it, but make sure to think about it first.

Buying a Modular Home

Tuesday, November 21st, 2006

There are a lot of people who purchase modular homes every year. They bring them out to the lot in pieces and assemble them right there in front of you. When I first graduated from high school I got a job at a local construction plant working on the assembly line for modular homes. My specific job was to paint the rooms, we did bathrooms, kitchens and closets. I saw a lot of things go on at that plant that made me think that I would never buy a modular home, then I started working around stick built homes. Let me tell you that they are much worse as far as the quality goes than the modular homes.

When it came time for me to buy a home I ended up purchasing a modular home. It came in two pieces and was delivered to the lot in the morning. By early in the afternoon we were standing in our own home. It was fantastic, and there were several reasons that made me decide on buying a modular home. First I really liked the fact that they are built under roof so that the raw building materials are not exposed to the elements. Second they tend to be built with more heavy duty materials so that they survive the ride on the trailer on the way to the lot. The insulation tends to be better in a modular as well.

So if you are thinking about buying a modular home I say go for it. If you have any reservations about buying a prefab home then you should see if you could get a tour of the assembly line. I think you will be pleasantly surprised at how well they are put together.

Finding Your New Home

Tuesday, November 21st, 2006

When the time comes for you to make that leap and purchase your own home there is no doubt that you will be a little nervous. This is really a big step for you and it would be unusual for you not to be nervous when entering into a contract that is longer than you have probably lived. Add to that the fact that you might have been living pretty foot loose in an apartment community without all that much responsibility other than paying rent and you have the recipe for a sleepless night or two. But don’t take it to heart, there are many reasons why owning your own home is a great idea, and here are two of those reasons.

1. Security and Financial Growth – Sure owning your own home is a bit more expensive from month to month but the price of your home will continue to rise as the years go by. There are ways, and you can look this up in your local library, for you to own a home outright within 10 years. This is a great thing but takes discipline and patience. So settle into your mortgage knowing that every month your home is worth more than it was the month before.

2 Freedom – Did you ever have one of those landlords that did not like you to do anything to the house, not even to hang a picture? And if you did hang that picture then heaven help you, you were going to have to pay for the repair. Well, guess what? You aren’t going to have to worry about that any longer. When you own your own home you don’t have to worry about what color you wan the walls or how much noise you want to make (as long as you don’t disturb the neighbors) Just enjoy the freedom that owning your own home can provide.

Yes it can be a stressful time when you are purchasing your own home but if you keep these two things in mind it will help you to know that you are making the right choice for you.

Choosing Options for Your New Credit Card

Sunday, November 19th, 2006

If you are in the position to pick and choose from which credit card company you are going to deal with then you have a lot of decisions to make. It’s both good and bad that the options for what you are going to get attached to your new credit card have really expanded over the past few years, and it certainly is nice to have some of them at your disposal, but it can get a little distracting because really all the credit card is going to do is to give you the ability to pay your way with plastic, right? Here are some of the more common options and what they can mean to you.

1. The Interest Rate – Interest rates vary from card to card and they can really stick it to you when it comes to the interest rate if you aren’t careful about reading the fine print. How many times do you get a credit card offer in the mail that has the huge 0% on the face of the envelope? I can guarantee you that the card is, in almost every case, not a true no interest credit card. They are simply no interest for a certain amount of time, or for balance transfers, after the grace period has expired they will balloon to a higher interest rate.

2 Bonuses and Travel Points – First it was the frequent flyer miles, then came the ability to get things out of a catalog once you accumulated enough points. You can even request that they send you a check. But any way that you slice it you can get some really neat stuff if you use your credit card and then request some of the things that they offer. This can be a good thing, especially if use your card frequently and you don’t carry a balance from month to month.

There are other things that are important to keep in mind like the annual fee, but really if you pay attention to these few things you will be happier with your decision on which credit card to choose. Of course no matter what card you have just make sure you protect your credit and it will take care of you for the rest of your life.

Avoiding the Pitfalls of Your First Credit Card

Saturday, November 18th, 2006

Everyone wants to have some freedom in their lives, and this goes doubly so with students that are starting out on a college education. The problems, however, that you can have with your credit as a college student are problems that can follow you for many years, perhaps even for the rest of your life. Here are some ways that you can protect your credit while still enjoying the freedom that owning your own credit card can give to you.

1. Make sure that you don’t overextend yourself – If you can’t afford the monthly payments then you are setting yourself up for disaster. Certainly it seems reasonable that you are only paying $20 a month for that I-pod, but when you end up with many payments like this and higher they can quickly get away from you

2. Don’t skip a payment – If you have a bad mark against you on your credit report then this will follow you for many years, sometimes up to 10 years. Late payments are generally reported once they are 30 days late and you really will have a hard time removing them from your report

3 Only use one card – Don’t have multiple credit lines open. If you only use one card and it does happen to get away from you then apply for another and transfer the balance so that you can enjoy the 0% apr, but do not then go out and charge up your old card again.

By following these simple rules you will save yourself a lot of heartache and headaches down the line. Take good care of your credit from the start and it will take good care of you for the rest of your life.

South Florida Winters are the Best

Sunday, November 5th, 2006

What goes through your mind when you think of South Florida? For many people the first thing that they think of is the sweltering heat and humidity, but that is only part of the story. I live in South Florida and I can say for a certainty that it does indeed get hot in the summertime but there are a few months out of the year that are so beautiful that it makes you forget that there is ever any hot months at all. That brings out some great opportunities to enjoy this tropical area of the United States that aren’t as pleasant in the summer months.

Starting in mid to late October the temperatures start to really cool in the southern part of the sunshine state and you end up with daytime temperatures in the 70s with a fantastic breeze that keeps you comfortable all the time. The skies are a brilliant color of blue and there rarely is any rain to keep you indoors. It is at this time that many people start to head out to some of the great restaurants and beaches that are available on the treasure coast. I know that there are some great little seafood restaurants on the intercostal waterway and at the beach in my area where I love to go when the temperatures get cooler, and although the Atlantic is a little colder in these months the beaches are beautiful and the surf is typically larger for those of you who enjoy surfing.

So when the temperatures start to get cold in the North it’s time for you to head to the sunny south to enjoy all that the sunshine state has to offer. It’s surely fun in the sun and a welcome break from the snow packed states that hold you hostage for the cold months of the year.

Prepare Your Space for Great Study Habits

Sunday, November 5th, 2006

Something that has always been very frustrating to me is having the ability to study effectively. It always seemed that no matter how hard I tried there was always something that got in the way of my getting a good study session in so I decided to start from the beginning and make my study habits better so that I could get more out of my learning. The first thing that I did was to prepare my personal study area for more effective learning. Here is what I did.

The first thing that I did was to do a thorough cleaning. I made sure that the area was neat and that the only real things that I had there were the things that would benefit me when I was doing my studying. That meant getting rid of the TV, Ipod, radio and anything else that would keep me from learning. I then made sure that everything that I needed for studying was available and easily accessible. I also made sure that when I was in the study area that everyone knew that I was not to be interrupted for any reason other than emergencies. Unnecessary interruptions are always bad for study because it breaks your concentration and then you need to spend additional time getting back into your subject. A few other things that I was sure to do was to get a comfortable chair, make sure that the lighting was adequate and the temperature was right.

So if you are ready to get the most out of your study then you really need to start at the beginning with the proper preparation. This will get your study session off to a good start and help you to learn more in less time. Future articles will cover other aspects of study habits.

Have you Ever Been Stuck at the Airport?

Sunday, November 5th, 2006

Have you ever found yourself at the airport with a lot of time to spare? That recently happened to me when I was flying out of the airport on the same day as my mother and the airport was two hours away from my parents home. I was flying to England to meet my wife and my mother was flying to my home in Florida to take care of it while I extended my vacation. Her flight left at 8am and my flight did not leave until 3 pm. I was wondering what I was going to do while I waited, especially since I was stuck at an airport where there was no wireless internet connection. Here is how I kept myself busy while I was there.

The first thing that I did was to pace the halls. I walked up and down the c concource for about an hour before I stumbled onto something interesting. Outside the Admirals Club I found that I could get a wireless signal so I planted myself down and did a couple hours of work. This helped the time go rather quickly and I was happy that I could spend the time being online instead of trying to sleep sitting up in an uncomfortable airport chair. Another thing that I did was to do some good old fashion people watching. This is something that is really interesting at an airport because you have hundreds of people coming in from all over the world and there are so many different types of people to look at. That kept me interested for about an hour.

So if you find yourself stuck in an airport for a long period of time do some walking and see what kind of opportunities present themselves. You may just be surprised at what you can find to get yourself into when you are stuck at such a melting pot, and what you can see, so enjoy your time and make the best of it.

Enjoy Fall in Pennsylvania

Saturday, November 4th, 2006

It is getting to be the time of year that many people that live in the state of Pennsylvania wait all year to see, that is autumn and the changing of the leaves. I grew up in Pennsylvania and have always loved that time of year. There were so many thing to see and do around that time that it literally filled the senses. We got to enjoy everything from the drives through the mountains with their bursts of yellow, red and orange leaves, the harvest time of many of the local crops and cool things like the tapping of the Maple trees for their sap. If you are planning on visiting Pennsylvania this autumn then here are a few tips to help you to make the most of your trip.

1. Plan Ahead – Many local hotels and motels fill up early during the peak leaf changing season because so many people travel in from out of town to see the change. One time my wife and I were coming to the area but not to see the leaves and we had a very hard time finding a room because they had all booked early so make sure you plan ahead and reserve a room.

2. Bring the Right Clothes – The right clothes in Pennsylvania in Autumn are everything. Sometimes it’s hot, sometimes it’s cold, sometimes it might even snow, so make sure that you bring a variety of clothes because not only might the weather change from day to day, a warm day can turn into a cool evening rather quickly.

So enjoy your trip to Pennsylvania to see the fall leaves change. Take your time on the roads, especially when they are wet because those leaves become like ice when they get wet. Grab yourself a great map and go exploring. Pennsylvania is a great place to be.

The Basics of Online Education

Friday, November 3rd, 2006

Do you want to further your education? It doesn’t matter if you are in high school wanting to get your college education or if you are an adult just wanting to learn more to hone your craft or to change professions you have the same decision that you need to make… where are you going to go? Fortunately for you there are more options than traveling to your state university or commuting to the local community college every day to further your education. With the introduction of the Internet it has opened a whole new way of learning and that is by getting your education online. But what exactly is an online education and how does it measure up with the more traditional way of getting your education?

Online education, or distance learning, has really taken on a life of it’s own in the past few years. With the availability of the Internet, and especially high speed internet access, it is becoming easier and easier to join one of the accredited online colleges (many times the more traditional colleges also offer the same classes online) and to get your degree online. These colleges are spread out over the country but that doesn’t really matter to you. If you are truly getting your education online then you don’t even have to be in the same city as if you were getting your degree locally. You simply log into the classroom every day to get your assignments and then you upload them (or complete them online) in order to get your grade. There isn’t even a need to ever meet the teachers or other students and you can do it at any time of the day so it won’t interfere with your work schedule or your life in general. And the great news is that employers are recognizing more and more that an online education is a great way to go, and they are hiring based on that degree just as much as if you were taking the classes in a physical classroom.

Yes, the world is changing, and that includes the way that many people are getting their degrees. So take the time to investigate getting your education online when you are planning furthering your education, you may find that it suites you and your lifestyle to a tee.
