Play Board Games for Family Fun

Sunday, December 31st, 2006

There are a lot of different types of games that people play. There are online games and home video game systems, but it seems that one type of game that used to be played a lot is not as “in the spotlight” as it used to be. These are board games, and although they have seemed to drop in popularity a bit over the past few years they are still great fun to play, especially in a family friendly environment. Everyone that loves board games has their favorites, but here are a few that I love to play.

1. Monopoly – This is the old standby board game that almost everyone has heard of. It is a board game that is generally played for long periods of time and has to do a little bit with the roll of the dice and a lot with strategy of buying real estate (the squares on the playing board) The game is won when one individual owns everything and the other players are totally flat broke. This game has been played in marathon sessions where the company actually had to fly in additional monopoly money.

2. Parcheesi – Here is a great old board game that is a lot of fun to play and doesn’t require much brain power (sorry if that offends anyone). You roll the dice and move your piece around the board. The first person to reach the goal wins, but you need to reach that goal with an exact roll of the die.

There are many other board games that can be played, but these are a few that will get you started. If you love these games then you are in good company. If you’ve never tried them then I suggest getting them and try having a family night where you play them together. You might find that you actually enjoy each others company.

Chico Visits the Vet

Friday, December 29th, 2006

Today, is a day that Chico and I will remember for the rest of our lives, he is having the snip, as the Spanish say he is being “castrada”, (it does not need translating). It does sound painful, even though the vet assures me, (whilst she takes my 170 euros), that it is not. She would like the Spanish people to follow my example and have their dogs “castrada”. This would help reduce the number of stray dogs and cats, although to be fair, the situation has improved considerably since we first came here.

We sit in the reception area, smiling and nodding at the other dog owners, however, both of us are shaking involuntarily. Dogs seem to know that a trip to the vet is not going to be a pleasant experience. Our names are called and I take him into the surgery. I have a terrible feeling of betrayal, I say goodbye to Chico promising that I will return and then I make a dash for the nearest bar, a quick brandy should do the trick, and suddenly I remember I have given up the drink for Lent.

The waiter smiles – Buenas dias
I reply “Coffee con leche, por favor”

I thought I would write this article on the subject that is without doubt closest to a mans heart. No, it is not his wallet, although that is very close, it is his dog. Now the Spanish have a somewhat tarnished reputation when it comes to caring about animals. In the past, they have inflicted cruelty to animals that we British just cannot accept.

I still think bullfighting is horrific, if you get the chance to go, and then do not, you have been warned. Irrespective of what people say about tradition and art, bullfighting is gory, but it is big business, there is a lot of money involved, some of it even coming from the EU in the form of subsidies. Surprisingly, the majority of Spaniards are actually against or indifferent to bullfighting and the disgraceful behaviour of so-called “hunters” appalls them. Following the bombings Madrid, there has been a change of government and now the ruling PSOE is considering introducing the much-needed national animal protection legislation; we will have to wait and see how.

However, the good news is, it is getting better, helped of course by the Brits, who open charity shops, rescue centres, and do a truly wonderful job. Here in the southeast corner of Spain, in the little coastal town of Mojacar, there is a charity rescue organisation called PWAS (Peoples Animal Welfare Society), who since 1990 have done outstanding work, rescuing and caring for abandoned animals. Their work was recognised in 2000 when they were awarded a prestigious Certificate of Association by the R.S.P.C.A.

When we first came to Spain, we brought our two dogs with us, both Yorkshire terriers, brother and sister. In a moment of madness my wife christened them Cagney (apparently after James Cagney, because the dog looked like a little toughie, bless him)

The Reasons People Play Games

Friday, December 29th, 2006

What is it that makes you enjoy playing games? Some people love the mental stimulation that word games or puzzles provide. Other people love to play mindless little addictive games that pass the time between periods of activity and yet still others play in order to have a friendly (or sometimes not so friendly) competition among friends. But no matter why it is that you play the games that you play they can be so addictive that you find yourself taking up most of your day playing them. Here is a breakdown on why people play games, perhaps you will be able to fit yourself into one of these categories.

1. The Time Waster – This person plays games just to pass the time, either at work or at home when they have nothing better to do. The problem with being a time waster is that the game playing often spills over into the periods of time that should be productive

2. Busy Minds – The person who plays games for the stimulation needs to have something that is constantly occupying their minds at all times. These people generally like puzzles, word games and sudoku and they play them addictively.

3. The Competer – This person plays games to compete against other players. They often find themselves frustrated if things aren’t going their way with the game. They don’t care if they play against someone online or if they play with them in their living rooms, they just love competing.

If you find yourself in one of these categories there is only one thing that you can do, play more games.

Help with Medicaid for Medical Treatments

Friday, December 29th, 2006

The United States has one of the best health care systems in the world. It provided good medical treatments for its citizens, but it can be very costly. It seems that in recent years that the cost of medical supplies and care has risen by so much that it has put the hope of proper medical care out of reach of some individuals. That is why the United States Government, in 1965, established the Medicaid program in order to help low-income individuals and families to be able to afford proper medical care.

Although the Medicaid program is funded on a federal level it is also co-funded and administered on the state level. At this time, all 50 states in the United States take part in the Medicaid program, and typically about one in every 7 people takes advantage of the Medicaid program. It is administered through various government agencies on a state level and most states have online access to the Medicaid system so that you can apply for help online or check out the regulations.

So if you find that you, or a family member, is in need of some medical treatment that you are not able to afford, the federally funded insurance program may provide the answer to what you need. Although they do not pay for 100% of the cost of medical treatment for adults, the money that they do pay will help to defer the cost of the medical expenses. The amount that they pay is taken on a sliding scale according to your income. If you have more questions about Medicaid or other similar medical assistance programs in your state then contact them directly. They will be able to provide you with the assistance that you need.

Looking for Land in All the Wrong Places

Monday, December 18th, 2006

Have you ever wanted to invest in real estate but didn’t really want to fool with buying and selling houses? There is a lot that goes into the trade of buying and selling of houses, or house flipping as it is called and the competition has gotten unusually fierce in the more competitive markets. I can remember at one time in the state of Florida that people, just regular people, were picking up houses for next to nothing and making a quick flip and dumping the for a quick profit, and boy were they profiting!

The market today is quite different, but one thing that has always worked seems to still be doing just as well today, the business of buying land for investment. There are still many areas of the country where you can pick up a lot, or even several acres for a little bit of nothing and within a few years you can turn around and make quite a profit. The secret lies in knowing just where it is that you should buy the property. These areas are hot spots that really are just about to pop, that is where you should start looking.

So if you have the means to do so why not try your hand at investing in some land. House values go up and down but land will always be worth something. Just do a search on the internet to find out where some of the real estate hot spots are and go looking for a few acres. You might just find that investing in that piece of land was the best thing that you ever did.

Snooping Goes to the Internet

Saturday, December 16th, 2006

There used to be a time when nosy people would sit by the front window, half hidden from sight and looking out at what was going on outside, trying to figure out if the neighbors were fighting or if they got something new and the practice was generally looked down upon. Bringing that to the present we now have a new sort of snoop, someone that is able to find out more information about more people than the person that sat at the front window could have ever hoped to find out. They use the power of the Internet to look up personal information about their neighbors and friends, to be honest they just look up information on anything they want to because that information is on the Internet in the form of public records. But what kind of things could you hope to look up online and just how personal can you get with that information.

Well there are software programs out there than lump together all the best resources for information digging and you can find them everywhere for sale. The first thing that you will want to do is to open the program and do a search for things such as tax records and land sale records. This will give you some great information such as, how much did your neighbor pay for his house and how much are their taxes? You could also do searches for criminal records in your area as well as finding out a list of the most wanted felons in your state. You can look up phone numbers and addresses of old friends and even do reverse phone number lookups to see who it was that just tried to call you. The list of what you can do goes on and on.

So pick up a copy of the latest detective software to see what you can find out about your friends and neighbors. You will also be surprised to find out what there is about you on the Internet and you can even have some of it removed from the online records if you know where to ask. Yes, the snoop has gone high-tech and isn’t going back anytime soon.

Keep Your Child Safe by Teaching Them

Friday, December 15th, 2006

Keeping your child safe is more than a job; it is a responsibility that you took on when you became a parent. A child is not able to take care of itself as efficiently as an adult can so it is up to you as the parent to nurture the child and to teach it from the start what is right and wrong. There have been a lot of theories that have come to the surface lately that tell parents that they should allow their children to do whatever they want, that they should be free to make their own decisions. But if you take a mind of a child and you don’t fill it with things that will protect them through their lives then they will be filled with the voices of inexperience and that will lead to tragedy.

Let’s take for example if you don’t take the time to teach your children right from wrong when it comes to the matter of how they should handle being approached by a stranger. The smart thing for a child to do would be to scream as loud as they possibly could and to run away, but by nature children are trusting. By not teaching your child the proper response to do when they are approached by a stranger you are opening up the opportunity for them to be hurt by a predator.

The truth of the matter is that there are a lot of people out there that would like nothing more than to prey on the inexperience of a youth. It’s up to you as a parent to make sure that your child is taken care of. Inform your child from a young age. Take the initiative, you are the parent, they are the child. Just make sure that whatever you do it is tempered by love because that is when the child will flourish.
