Tips on Studying for College Entrance Exams

Saturday, January 27th, 2007

When you are applying for colleges, one of the most important things that you can do is to do well on your college entrance exams. Average and below average scores can cause colleges to reject you without even looking at other factors such as your GPA. Most colleges have a minimum score that they will accept for college entrance exams.

There are a number of things that you can do to help prepare for the exams. There are books available that you can use to study. Although the questions in the study books are not what are on the test, they help prepare you for the types of questions that ill be on the actual exams.

In conjunction with studying the entrance exam books, you can take a entrance exam prep class to help you prepare. Studies have shown that these prep classes can significantly improve college entrance exam scores. They don’t tend to cost a lot of money and it is money well spent.

You can take a practice test. This will help you to see which areas are your strong points and which areas you need to work on. By concentrating on studying to improve your weaknesses you can improve you scores from the practice test to the real test.

Finally, take care of yourself as the exam approaches. Get plenty of rest the entire week before the exam. Eat well, especially the morning of test. Don’t load up on carbohydrates as it can affect your blood sugar and cause you to crash during the test. Instead, eat a well balanced diet that includes proteins and drink water.

Whether you choose to do one or all of these suggestions, the only person that can do anything to improve your college entrance exams is you. Since taking the entrance exams is your first step to your future, make sure you star off on the right foot by doing what you can t help yourself be prepared.

Renting Vacation Home from Owners Saves Money

Saturday, January 27th, 2007

When traveling with family, we have found that the best places to stay are in homes or condos instead of hotels. There is more room to spread out, we have a kitchen and dining room and we always try to stay places with a screened in porch as well. Anybody who has ever traveled with extended family knows the importance of having room to spread out! We have learned that, while going through a rental program is sometimes easier as far as finding them on the internet or having a larger selection, renting a vacation home directly from the owners can save you money.

For instance, we recently took an annual family trip to Florida. The home that we stay in every year was taken, so we began to look for other homes in the area. What we ended up finding was a slightly larger home in a more convenient area for about 25% less than what we normally spent. It was for rent by the owner, who was extremely nice and helpful and even gave us tips on different restaurants and shops that we didn’t know about.

You can find for rent by owner sites on the internet that allow owners to list their rental properties. This allows you to be able to compare different rental properties and also search for availability. As always, before committing to a rental property, you need to read their rental agreement carefully and find out about their cancellation policies. We were so happy with the for rent by owner that we had in Florida that we have already booked it for the next two years, locking us into the rental price even if it goes up. Now we are looking for owner rentals in California for a trip with friends. The money we have saved on renting can definitely be put to use on our vacation.

Relaxing in the Sun at the Gulf Coast in the Fall

Friday, January 26th, 2007

When most of us think about going to the beach, the thought is that you head to the ocean during the warmest months of the year. The thought of cooling in the water during the scorching heat of August attracts many families to the Gulf Coast. We used to be one of those people until we discovered that fall is an ideal time to head to the Gulf Coast to relax in the sun.

We found this out by accident when we combined a work trip and a family vacation to the Gulf Coast of Florida in mid-October. We weren’t sure what the weather would be like, but we knew that we would just be paying a fraction of what we normally pay for the house we usually stay in. The idea of staying just off the beach for less than $800 for an entire week was one that we could not pass up.

What we discovered when we got there was that the weather was perfect. It was in the 80s during the day and still warm enough to enjoy the Gulf waters or swim in the swimming pool. We loved that most days we were the only people at the pool and that the nearest family on the beach was about 25 yards away. The shops were all still open, but we didn’t have to fight the crowds to look. There was no wait at any of the restaurants, which was a plus for a family with 2 ½ year old twins!

Essentially, we found fall in the Gulf Coast of Florida to be the ultimate time of year to go. It was relaxing, it saved us a ton of money and we didn’t have to share our space with hundreds of other tourists. The weather couldn’t have been better. We now head to the Gulf Coast every fall for our family vacations, which is something we all look forward to every year.

Important Emergency Information to Leave at Home when Vacationing

Friday, January 26th, 2007

We love to take mini, spur of the moment vacations. We are famous to our friends and family to take a vacation day at the last minute and go away for a long weekend. Sometimes we don’t even know where we are going or what we are going to do, we just know that we want to get away. One thing that we have learned is that we need to leave emergency information, such as a phone number, at home in our house or with someone we know in case someone would need to contact us.

Our friends and family are very important to us. However, there are a few that have a habit of tracking us down. We used to not let anybody know where we were going, but we discovered this was not a good idea when our car broke down in the middle of nowhere during a snowstorm and friends and family were worried but didn’t know where we were.

Now, we always leave emergency information on our refrigerator that includes our cell phone, license plate number and information on where we are going. When we drive of on a vacation, not sure about where we are going to end up, we always call the same friend when we reach the destination to let her know where we are. Everyone knows that she will have our information and we know that she won’t call us unless it is a real emergency.

Because anything can happen, it is always good to leave emergency information at home when you go on a vacation. Either keep it in a safe place at home or with a friend or family member that can be easily reached. We all want our privacy and to get away, but we need to be prepared in case of an emergency at the same time.

Community Colleges can be a Stepping Stone to Big Universities

Friday, January 19th, 2007

When it comes time to apply to universities, students find that what they have done during the high school years (or what they haven’t done) really affects whether or not they are accepted to college. Everyone knows that grades and extra curricular activities play a part in your college applications, but you can’t truly know the scope of this before you begin applying.

If you find yourself getting rejection letters from colleges and universities, don’t let this discourage you. You can still get into the college of your dreams and further your education if you are willing to work hard for the next year or two to prove that you are serious about school. Community colleges are an excellent way for you to get a start on your education and improve your grade point average.

Now that you have graduated from high school, your future is staring you in the face and it an be a scary thing, especially if your plans for the future are put on hold until you get into a university. Don’t let time pass you by, apply to a local community college and begin taking classes as soon as you can.

If you have a goal to get into a particular college, check with them to see what classes you could take at a community college that could be transferred to the other college upon acceptance. For instance, certain things like sciences, math classes and English classes can often have their credits transferred from community colleges to other colleges.

Don’t let college and university rejection letters keep you from following your dreams. Take the time to apply to a local community college and get a jump on your education and a boost for the next college applications you send in.
