Sudden Infant Death syndrome-Diseases

Friday, February 15th, 2008

What is this condition?

Also called crib death, sudden infant death syndrome is a medical mystery of early infancy. It kills apparently healthy infants, usually between ages 4 weeks and 7 months, for reasons that remain unexplained, even after an autopsy. Typically, parents put the infant to bed and later find him or her dead, often with no indications of a struggle or distress of any kind. Some infants may have had signs of a cold, but such symptoms are usually absent. Sudden infant death syndrome has occurred throughout history, allover the world, and in all climates.

What causes it?

Sudden infant death syndrome accounts for 7,500 to 8,000 deaths annually in the United States, making it one of the leading causes of infant death. Most of these deaths occur during the winter, in poor families, and among underweight babies and those born to mothers under age 20.

Although infants who die from this disorder often appear healthy, research suggests that many may have had undetected abnormalities, such as an immature respiratory system and respiratory dysfunction. In fact, the current thinking is that it may be caused by an abnormality in the control of breathing, which causes apnea (prolonged nonbreathing periods) with profound hypoxemia (decreased oxygen in the blood) and irregular heartbeats. Bottle feeding, instead of breastfeeding, and advanced parental age don’t cause sudden infant death syndrome.

Although parents find some victims wedged in crib corners or with blankets wrapped around their heads, autopsies rule out suffocation as the cause of death. Even when blood-tinged sputum is found around the infant’s mouth or on the crib sheets, autopsy shows an open airway, so choking on vomit is not the cause of death. Typically, these infants don’t cry out and show no signs of having been disturbed in their sleep, although their positions or tangled blankets may suggest movement just before death, perhaps due to terminal spasm.

What are its symptoms?

Depending on how long the infant has been dead, the infant may have a mottled complexion with extreme bluish discoloration of the lips and fingertips, or pooling of blood in the legs and feet that looks like bruises. Pulse and respirations are absent, and the infant’s diaper is wet and full of stools.

How is it diagnosed?

Diagnosis of sudden infant death syndrome requires an autopsy to rule out other causes of death. Characteristic histologic Endings on autopsy include small or normal adrenal glands and petechiae over the visceral surfaces of the pleura, within the thymus (which is enlarged), and in the epicardium. Autopsy also reveals extremely wellpreserved lymph structures and certain disease characteristics that suggest chronic hypoxemia, such as increased pulmonary artery smooth muscle. Examination also shows swollen, congestive lungs fully expanded in the pleural cavities, liquid (not clotted) blood in the heart, and curd from the stomach inside the windpipe.

How is it treated?

If the parents bring the infant to the emergency room, the doctor will decide whether to try to resuscitate him or her. In “aborted sudden infant death syndrome,” an infant who is not breathing is successfully resuscitated. Such an infant, or any infant who had a sibling stricken by this disorder, should be tested for infantile apnea. If tests are positive, a home apnea monitor may be recommended.

Because most infants cannot be resuscitated, however, treatment focuses on emotional support for the family.

Also called crib death, sudden infant death syndrome is a medical mystery of early infancy. It kills apparently healthy infants, usually between ages 4 weeks and 7 months, for reasons that remain unexplained, even after an autopsy.

Kick-Starting Your Progress-Fitness

Friday, February 15th, 2008

Experiment with new exercises and activities to keep your body and brain stimulated and avoid reaching a training plateau. For one week at the gym, do not allow yourself to use the machines that you normally use. Using different machines will provide a new challenge and you will feel bits working that you never knew you had.

For one week replace all alcoholic drinks with glasses of sparkling water. Make it as nice a drink as your regular tipple – prepare it as lovingly as you would a gin and tonic with ice and lemon or lime and really enjoy it. A week of no alcohol will give you a guaranteed reduction in your calorie intake.

Addicted to coffee shops? See if you can steer clear of them for a week. Go back to basics with a simple cup of tea or coffee and avoid the volume of milk that coffee shops provide and you will also resist the temptations of all the extras that go with it. You will feel lighter and less sluggish and you will save yourself a small fortune in the process.

Vary your workouts. If you do the same thing every time you go to the gym you will soon reach a plateau in your training and you will get bored. Your body adapts to the workload and soon stops developing so you must always have something in your workout armoury that will keep your body stimulated and continue the great results that you are looking for. Progress leads to more motivation and if you can do your programme easily you are not the master of the gym, you are someone who needs a new workout.

Have a selection of workouts. You might have an hour or you might only have 20 minutes to spare so you need a workout to suit all occasions. Plan different routines and then keep them in your workout bag so they are always handy.

Have some back-up plans. If you do feel like a night out, you will need to have a morning-after-the-night-before workout lined up. Providing you can see straight and balance OK you will be fine for some gentle cardiovascular exercise. Go easy on the weights until you feel steady on your feet. A light workout will do you a lot more good that lounging around in bed all day moaning ‘never again’. You will feel better generally and doubly virtuous for the fact that you kept your exercise routine going in the face of adversity.

Reasons Why The Best Things In Advertising Are Free

Friday, February 15th, 2008

With small businesses, you can’t help but wonder how you can market your enterprise without having to use up your entire budget. As much as you want to stop thinking about it, the fact remains that most of the advertising tools are just too costly for your taste.

Take for example tv and radio commercials. You know for a fact that such medium can cost an arm and a leg that’s why these two are definitely out of the list.

But not all advertising methods are expensive. In fact, some of the most cost effective tools are being used often by most business owners and marketers alike. And these include print ads such as your brochure printing materials, which showcase all the products and services in your list.

As they say, most of the time, the best things in life are free. In advertising, the same adage is true. Many business owners in fact, even the big ones, utilize these marketing tactics because they believe that there are such things that can actually do the job without having to pay so much.

Here are some of the reasons why the best things in advertising are most often free:

- Print ads such as your flyers and brochures can be made without having to hire a professional brochure printing company to do it for you. Lessen the costs; reduce the hassle.

- It never fails to spread out the good word regarding your product or service – word of mouth that is. Having your clients to put in a good word for you to their relatives and friends are the best free advertising there ever is. And remember, a good word can build your reputation steadily; but one bad comment and it’ll spread like wildfire.

- Preparing a special gift for some of your most popular clients can go a long way in endearing you to them. Bring your business cards with you so you can provide them with your contact information while you’re being appreciated.

- Exchanging links with other websites are basically free and you don’t even need to do extra effort in looking for most searched sites.

- Posting your print ads at your local bulletin board helps reduce your costs of posting it by mail.
- When giving tips at a restaurant, include your business cards or brochures. Nowadays, it’s very common to see glass bowls in the cashier area for putting your business cards.

- Press releases in your local newspaper and newsletter can help you advertise your business without having to spend a penny on your advertising campaign.

Lastly, give out free samples or promotional products to your target audience and they’ll definitely gobble up your promo. It may be the one thing that you’ll surely spend your money on but the outcome produces great rewards.

Dealing With Your Boss-Pregnancy

Thursday, February 14th, 2008

If you have told people at work that you are pregnant, you may become aware of how accommodating your boss your colleagues, or your company’s parenting policies are, or how inflexibly and impersonally the needs of new parents are handled. This may provide a completely new perspective of your workplace and gives you a glimpse of the professional environment in to which you may have to integrate your parenting goals. How your company meets your needs as a pregnancy begins is usually indicative of how your requests will be met as a parent in the future. Timing the announcement

If you haven’t yet told your employer, time it well. Even though you don’t have to tell your boss about your pregnancy until 30 days before you begin maternity leave, it’s best not to wait until your pregnancy is obvious. Many women wait until the end of the first trimester. By then the risk of miscarriage is low, and you may have already had first trimester screening for chromosomal abnormalities and CVS showing a normal pregnancy. If you have extreme fatigue or morning sickness, or if your job is very stressful, speak with your boss earlier so that you can negotiate changes to your schedule that will help you to be more comfortable and productive.

Your timing may depend on how your manager has handled previous pregnancies in your company. If you expect an unfavorable reaction, wait until you have demonstrated your productivity as a pregnant employee. Right after the successful completion of a project, for example, would make a perfect occasion to connect your pregnancy with your ability to work well.

Considering the needs of your boss and colleagues

Make sure you are fully informed about your maternity leave options and approach your boss with a plan for your transition out of work, time away, and return to work. Most managers will appreciate that you have thought not only of your own needs but also of those of your colleagues and company. This may put you in a favorable position to negotiate flexible work hours during your pregnancy.

Since your job will be held during your absence, your colleagues may be the recipients of your assignments when you leave. They may wonder whether you will return to work and take back your workload. Assure them that you are aware of their concerns and interested in smooth transitions for all involved.

Tips For Working Moms To Be

Certain practical measures can make a significant difference to the way you feel at work, and consequently, your productivity. Try the following tips.

Break your lunch hour in to more frequent, shorter breaks of 15 to 20 minutes.

Rest during your breaks. Close your eyes and allow your self to cat nap.

Keep a supply of snacks at work. Frequent snacking helps combat pregnancy nausea.

Keep a glass of water handy and drink throughout the day. Try to empty your glass at least four times during an 8 hour day and go to the bathroom frequently.

Try walking around as much as possible to increase circulation, reduce swelling, and prevent blood clots in your legs, which are more common in pregnancy.

If you stand up for most of the day, try and get some time sitting down with your feet up every hour.

Do you care! Credit reports and score ?

Wednesday, February 13th, 2008

I am often asked why do I care so much about Credit Reports? Do I eat breath and sleep credit reports? No not really I do have other things I enjoy outside of credit reports and scores.
I would guess the main draw for me is educating consumers on a often misunderstood topic. I never knew what a online credit report was until my mid twenties when I went to buy a car. I knew you need a good credit score, but even that was a mystery to me. After that first car buying experience I decided I should learn a little more about the industry and how it all works.
So thats how this little project came about, to help educate people on credit reports and scores.
After working for years in the industry I would say the most important thing you can do as a consumer is to pay your bills on time. Late pays really effect your credit sore, and stay on your report for along time. The next big thing is to not fall into the habit of applying for credit often. This puts a hard inquiry on your credit report, which will hurt your credit score.
Credit worthiness is an awesome tool that regardless of income, social standing, race, sex all consumers can achive, and with that can meet and exceed all kinds of goals. Whether that is to own a home, a car, or multiple homes.
Credit limit affects credit report
The purpose of calculating credit scores is obviously to gauge the credibility of loan applicants based on their credit histories. A study of your credit history portrays the probability of you repaying any balance due on your accounts. A history of payment of bills, lines of credit from various creditors, the balance of debt on various accounts and the number and type of credit accounts that you have are some of the basic factors that determine your credit score – along with its variation and deviation from your available credit limit. In a nutshell, if you have large account balances and use most of your available credit, and you have a lot of accounts, your credit score will likely go down. The credit limit is the upper limit of money that you can obtain (you should not go anywhere near this amount to maintain a good credit score). This amount is supposed to be repaid to the creditor within a predetermined time frame, usually 30 days.
Like it or not, your credit limit also reflects your income, assets and debts.

Equal Credit Opportunity Act
The Equal Credit Opportunity Act (ECOP) restricts a creditor from generating biased credit scores based on the gender, racial identity, color of skin, status, place and region of origin and other such sociological factors of a consumer. If you are denied credit, the creditor has to state explicitly the grounds for the denial. If you feel that you have been denied credit on a basis other than your credit score, you can and should file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the Attorney General in your state.

Sodium Silicate

Wednesday, February 13th, 2008

Sodium silicate (Molecular Formula – Na2SiO3, Molecular Mass – 122.06 g/mol) is a white solid that is soluble in water, producing an alkaline solution. There are various states of this compound; all are glassy, colorless, and soluble in water. This is also called water glass or liquid glass.

Sodium silicate is stable in neutral and alkaline solutions. In acidic solutions, the silicate ion reacts with hydrogen ions to form silica acid, which when heated and roasted forms silica gel, a hard, glassy substance.

Uses of Sodium Silicate
· Egg Preservation – Sodium silicate is used as an egg preservation agent. Eggs can remain fresh by using Sodium Silicate preservation method for up to nine months.

· Automotive repair – One of the popular uses of Sodium silicate is seal leaks at the head gasket.

· Cement uses – Sodium silicate has been widely used as general-purpose cement, especially for applications involving cementing objects exposed to heat or fire.

· Timber treatment – Treating wood with sodium silicate preserves wood from insects and possesses some flame-retardant properties.

· Concrete and masonry treatment – Concrete treated with a sodium silicate solution helps to significantly reduce porosity in masonry products like concrete and plasters. Applying Sodium Silicate with concrete permanently binds the silicates with the surface making them far more wearable and water repellent. These coatings are known as silicate mineral paint.

· Water Treatment – Sodium Silicate is used in water treatment in wastewater treatment plants. Water glass used to bind heavier molecules and drag them out of the water.

· Refractory use – Water glass is useful binder of solids, like vermiculite and perlite. When blended with these lightweight aggregates, water glass can be used to make hard, high-temperature insulation boards used for refractoriness’, passive fire protection and high temperature insulations, such as mounded pipe insulation applications.

ATM/Cash Withdrawals

Cash withdrawals from an ATM machine are the easiest, quickest and cheapest way to obtain the locale currency of a country.

Before Going Abroad:

1. Double Check Your Password:

The majority of ATM machines around the world only accept 4 digit passwords, if your password is longer than 4 digits make sure you contact your bank before you depart and create a shorter password. Also be aware that the majority of password key pads around the world only list numbers, if your password contains letters make sure you know the number equivalent.

2. Notify Your Bank Account/Credit Card Company:

Sudden activity in a foreign country might send up red flag warnings to your bank or credit card company causing them to put a hold on your debit or credit card. Avoid this by contacting them and letting them know that you will be traveling abroad.

3. Obtain Emergency Contact Numbers:

In the event that your debit or credit card is stolen while you are abroad, you want to make sure you no what to do. Contact your bank and/or credit card company and ask them for the procedures you should take in the event that it happens. Ask them for the international access number to their company from the country in which you will be.

4. Locate ATMs Abroad:

Look on the backside of your Debit/ATM/Credit card, if there is a Circus sign (associate with MasterCard) or a Plus sign (associated with Visa) then your ATM card is compatible with all ATMs that accept that sign around the world.

To locate Circus ATMs around the world visit: www.mastercard.com/us/personal/en/cardholderservices/atmlocations/index.html

To locate Plus ATMs around the world visit: http://visa.via.infonow.net/usa_atm/

Using Your ATM Card Abroad:

TIPS:

- Upon arriving in a country be sure to make your first withdrawal at the airport where there is always an ATM on site.

-When withdrawing money abroad at an ATM machine not associate with your bank you will be assessed fees (just as you would if you were using it domestically at an ATM machine not associated with your bank). You will probably be charged $1-4 per withdrawal depending on your bank (check with your bank for exact fees). Since withdraw fees can quickly add up minimize your withdraws by limiting your visits to ATM to once per day and withdrawing higher amounts.

- Many ATM machines have a cap on how much money you can withdrawal per day (usually $300-500).

-Many banks have a cap on how much money you can withdrawal per day (usually $500-700).

- In order to avoid being given large bills when withdrawing request an add amount (50, 70, 90, etc.)

- If you bank is member of the Global ATM Alliance (Bank of America, Barclays, etc.) you can withdrawal cash from any of the other banks in this alliance for no additional fee. For further information visit their website: www.scotiabank.com/cda/content/0,1608,CID8040_LIDen,00.html

Glamour On The Road

There was a time when traveling was glamorous. When ocean liners still crossed the Atlantic with nightly ballroom dances and men donned a suit and tie to fly. Fast-forward to our present day of roaming backpackers and jam-packed tour buses and one might secretly long for a bygone era. Luckily there are a few tricks of the trade to adding a little glamour to your next trip without sacrificing your comfy in flight sweat pants.

• Stock up on Samples — prior to traveling, swing buy any beauty or makeup counter for samples of beauty products, skin care & perfume samples. In place of your full sized drugstore anti wrinkle cream, you now have a free small portable 7 day sample of an oh so expensive department store cream.

• Indulge in Decedent Chocolate — every airport duty shop is filled with stores that sell the specified country’s national gourmet chocolate. Pick up a piece or two, and when your fellow air passengers are eyeing their unidentified lump that suffices as desert in the land of airplane food—whip out your gold wrapped chocolates and enjoy.

• An Elegant Pen — invest in a nice pen, you will find you use it often—postcards home, immigration forms, journal entries, etc. A classy pen is much more pleasurable to use than the old BIC pen buried at the bottom of your purse.

• Duty Free Shop — feeling a little travel worn at the airport, head to the nearest duty free shop—try out the lotions, makeup, perfume and every other beauty product known to man. You’ll kill some time, freshen up your look and board the plane feeling like a million bucks.

• In Flight Reviver — ask anyone who has just gotten of an overseas flight what they want to do, and they will inevitable say “take a shower”. Combat, or at least postpone this overwhelming desire by packing baby wipes in your carry on bag. Shortly before the plane begins its decent (and getting up from your seat becomes a no-no) head to the restroom and give yourself a quick “bath” with your baby wipes. Wash your face and wipe as much of your body down as you can manage in the confines of the airplane bathroom.

• Fresh Flowers Weekly — for the price of a latte or two you can have a pleasurable addition to your hotel.

• Red Lipstick is a Must — light, bright, dark or pale—find your shade of red and never leave home without it.

• A Sparkle or Two — a distinctive piece of jewelry or two can take any outfit from road rumpled to casual chic.

• Silk Scarves — how to the Europeans manage to look so pulled together even in the dead of winter? It’s the well-worn neck scarf; it dresses up any outfit while still keeping you toasty warm.

• Evian Facial Water — work past your qualms about paying for water in a bottle, and pick up a travel sized spray bottle of Evian water. You will be amazed at how refreshing it feels in hot weather, and your makeup will not smudge or budge, as is the case of a quick splash of water from a sink.

• Arrange an Airport Pick Up — shell out a few extra dollars and arrange to have a car service waiting for you when you get off the plane. Seeing a driver waiting with a sign with your name on it makes life not only a little more glamorous, but easy and reassuring as well.

An Online Business – Affiliate Programs make it Easier

Monday, February 11th, 2008

If you ever had the desire to start your own online internet business from home, you may have never heard the word “affiliate programs” before. If you did come across this word before, you may also have found the affiliate program review opportunities available that are online are overwhelming. So where do you begin?

Affiliate Programs – Know how

Affiliate programs may be the easiest online business to start running. Why?

With any online business you must have a product or service to sell. First you must create this product or service and then you must be able to fill orders or find people who will sell it for you for a hefty commission.

Selling your own product or service also means creating a website, learning how to write ad copy, setting up a marketing plan, being able to accept payments online and obviously doing the work. If you’re selling a physical product then you will need to make or buy the item, package it and pay for shipping costs. If you provide a service than you will likely have to start by doing free jobs to build your credibility and then when you are charging for your service you are still limited by how much work you can actually handle.

The magic of affiliate programs

starting with an affiliate program is a great way to get started in the online business world. In fact there are even some ‘Super Affiliates’ who are making nice and comfortable full time incomes from affiliate programs.

So, what exactly are affiliate programs?

Affiliate programs allow you to sell another company’s service or product and make a commission on every sale or lead. You do not even need to build a website, process the order, ship the product to the person, or anything like that. Your only job is to drive traffic (customers) to your affiliate link and hope that they click on it and buy the product.

An affiliate link is a special URL code that will identify customers coming to the company’s site from your advertising. It will likely be the website address with a code attached to the end.

Some affiliate programs also have tiers. That means if someone who is interested in SELLING the product comes through your link and signs up you will also get a small percentage of THEIR earnings. This is also called internet network marketing.

How do you choose the right program?

Try to determine if people are buying or looking to buy that product or service online. Is it cheaper or more expensive? There are many sources for finding that information including free ones such as the Overture keyword tool.

When you have found an area that is popular then type the subject along with ‘affiliate program’ into your search engine and see which programs have services or products for that area. You can also use an affiliate program review directory.

When you have found a program that looks interesting you should read the terms of the program. Make sure that payouts are not based on a high commission earning or you may never see your money. Also try to choose programs with high commission rates. Often you will find e-books and downloadable software has the highest rates as there is no physical product to make or ship. If you are satisfied with the terms then you need to sign up – usually a simple process.

Starting your marketing efforts

The reason affiliate programs are so wonderful for beginners and starters is that you only need to focus on marketing it and not making the actual product itself.

Many affiliate programs have information on how to market and give you tools such as solo ads, product feeds and more. The Plug in Profit Site is exactly what an affiliate program should be like. It has all the right tools to marketing online such as writing articles, creating pay-per-click campaigns, commenting in online forums etc.

Role of Vitamin E in Supplements

Sunday, February 10th, 2008

Vitamin E deficiency is associated with impaired immune responsiveness and increased severity of infection. Vitamin E deficiency has resulted in impaired bactericidal activity of phagocytes, reduced lymphocyte response to mitogens, decreased production of the cytokine IL-2, altered T cell differentiation in the thymus, and increased myocardial injury during viral infection. Supplementation with vitamin E during viral or bacterial infection (influenza, murine AIDS, herpes simplex virus, Staphylococcus aureus, parainfluenza, Clostridium pelfringens) has been shown to decrease mortality rate or severity of infection in several different animal models. However, not all studies have found an improved resistance to infection from vitamin E supplementation 85 and we are not aware of any human studies that have tested this theory by infecting human subjects and then assessing disease incidence and/or severity.

It is less clear whether intake of vitamin E above the RDA enhances resistance to infection in healthy individuals. The most promising results have come from studies involving elderly human subjects. In several randomized controlled trials, various doses of vitamin E were administered to elderly individuals for different periods of time and immune responses were measured.

Two studies that administered supplements (100-800 mg/day) for at least 6 months found an enhancement of several immune parameters including dihydrotestosterone (DTH) response, mitogen-induced IL-2 production, and increased antibody titer to hepatitis B and tetanus vaccine One of these studies found optimal results in those subjects receiving 200 mg/day of vitamin E, but higher levels of vitamin E (800 mg/day) were not associated with an additional improvement of immune response.

The results from one study failed to find an enhancement of immune response in elderly subjects consuming 100 mg/day. However, in this study, subjects received the supplement for only 3 months and perhaps a longer period of supplementation is necessary to observe an effect. The results from two additional studies found enhancement of several immune parameters (LPS-induced production of IL-1, TNFa, mitogen-induced lymphocyte proliferation, neutrophil phagocytosis) when vitamin C (1 g/day) and vitamin E (200-400 mg/day) were administered to healthy young and elderly adults. The mechanisms by which vitamin E supplementation may alter immune response remain to be established.

Currently, it is thought that one potential mechanism may involve the production of prostaglandin E 2 (PGE 2 ). PGE 2 , produced by macrophages, is known to suppress some lymphocyte responses. Some recent evidence suggests that aged animals fed additional vitamin E have a reduction of macrophage PGE 2 production. The immune response may be enhanced through the reduction of PGE 2. Further research on potential mechanisms will provide important information with respect to an understanding of vitamin E-associated immunomodulation. T

he findings from these studies show promise with respect to vitamin E supplementation and enhanced immune function, particularly in the elderly. However, we are not aware of any randomized clinical trials that have shown a decreased incidence of infection in association with vitamin E supplementation alone (without other vitamins or trace nutrients). The findings from one of the studies suggested a trend (p = 0.098, not statistically significant) towards reduced incidence of infectious disease in the elderly.

The results from animal studies suggest that in some instances, the incidence of disease is reduced with vitamin E supplementation. A reduced incidence of infection, however, was observed in chickens consuming diets supplemented with vitamin E. One study involving calves did not find a reduction in disease incidence in those animals fed additional vitamin E. Thus, the results from animal studies are similar to the human studies in that a beneficial effect of vitamin E supplementation has been found, although the finding is not consistent. At this time, the results regarding vitamin E supplementation and immunity in the elderly human population are promising. However, additional large-scale randomized controlled trials are necessary before it is possible to determine whether vitamin E supplementation results in reduced susceptibility to infection.

Immune Effects and Exercise

Although vitamin E has been studied in relation to exercise, most studies have focused on the potential antioxidant effects of vitamin E supplementation. Others have examined various physiological changes regarding vitamin E supplementation and exercise and found no change in neuroendocrine profile but a slight reduction in the incidence of gastrointestinal complications in those marathon runners consuming vitamin E for 2 weeks before the race. The only study we are aware of that examined immunity and vitamin E supplementation with exercise found that vitamin E and C supplementation before competing in an ultramarathon reduced the incidence of URI symptoms in the postrace period.

However, it was thought that this effect was related to vitamin C rather than vitamin E because the post-race reduction in symptoms of URI was not lower with vitamin E + C than vitamin C alone. To our knowledge, we are not aware of any studies that have explored potential associations between vitamin E supplementation alone and immune response in regards to exercise. Perhaps this area of research may show some promise in the elderly.

How Ornithine-a-ketoglutarate Is Formed-Sports

Sunday, February 10th, 2008

Also known as OKG, this compound is formed from two molecules of the amino acid ornithine and one a-KG. OKG has been shown in a variety of studies to have an anabolid anticatabolic effect. OKG has been used successfully via enteral or parenteral administration in conditions such as burn, postsurgery, malnutrition, and wound healing. The mechanism by which OKG exerts these effects is not known; however, the secretion of hormones such as insulin and growth hormone and the conversion to other metabolites (e.g., glutamine, arginine, etc.) might play a role.

Animal Studies

Vaubourdolle et al. used an animal burn model to study the effects of OKG administration during a hypercatabolic state. Rats were studied after having their dorsum in water at 90°C for 10 seconds (inducing a burn injury) and then starved for 24 hours. The supplementation of OKG (5 g/kg/day) for 2 days decreased the level of muscle mass loss and increased intramuscular glutamine concentration. An isonitrogenous amount of glycine had no effect. Similar work by Le Boucher et al found that OKG inhibits myofibrillar degradation in burn-injured rats while glycine had no such effect. In an interesting study using malnourished animals, male rats were starved for 3 days, then refed for 7 days with an oral diet (192 kcal kg/day; 2.25 g/kg/day of nitrogen) supplemented with either OKG, glutamine, or casein Starvation caused a drop in most tissue-amino acids except skeletal muscle leucine (+43%) and liver glutamate (+ 11 %). The primary effect of OKG was to normalize the amino acid concentrations in the liver and small bowel while glutamine normalized glutamine and leucine concentrations in skeletal muscle. In this case, it is apparent that OKG and glutamine act on different tissues . In rats implanted with a tumor, the administration of OKG (3.4-4.0 g/kg/day) for 5 days reduced muscle proteolysis by 33% while an isonitrogeno us amount of glycine had no effect.

In another animal model of trauma (bilateral femur fracture in the rat), there was no difference in body weight gain per gram of nitrogen intake after the administration of ornithine, OKG, or alpha-KG On the other hand, a study that compared OKG with arginine-a-ketoglutarate (AKG) suggested that the effects of OKG are not due to its a-KG content nor to its nitrogen content. That is, OKG produced a greater increase than AKG in muscle glutamine concentrations in burn injured rats. A decrease in intramuscular glutamine concentration is associated with skeletal muscle catabolism, thus, the action of OKG is neither solely related to its nitrogen content, nor to the presence of a-KG.

Human Studies

OKG has similarly been shown to have positive effects in humans on protein metabolism during hypercatabolic states. Vanbourdolle et al. 65 showed that the enteral (via the intestine) administration of OKG to burn patients improved glucose tolerance. In a study that compared varying doses of OKG (10, 20, and 30 g) delivered as one large bolus or via continuous infusion, investigators found that nitrogen balance improved and urinary 3-methylhistidine was reduced (an indicator of muscle protein degradation). In fact, the administration of 30 g as a bolus seemed to have the greatest benefit.

TPN supplemented with 0.35 g/kg of OKG to patients after elective abdominal surgery prevented the drop in protein synthesis seen in the unsupplemented controls. OKG supplementation might exert its anticatabolic effect via the maintenance of intramuscular glutamine levels. However, the mere provision of extra nitrogen does not confer similar effects. In a study that compared TPN supplemented with either OKG or branched-chain amino acids , there was less of a decrease in intramuscular glutamine levels in the OKG group Thus, one could argue that OKG administration is more effective than the BCAAs in reducing muscle glutamine loss and therefore ameliorating skeletal muscle proteolysis.

It is unclear if OKG exerts further anabolic/anticatabolic effects via alterations in the hormonal milieu. For instance, OKG administered to burn patients had no effect on plasma insulin or growth hormone concentration 65 On the other hand, OKG (15 g) given to growth-retarded prepubertal children produced an increase in plasma insulin-like growth factor-1 level.

Safety and Toxicity

High-dose OKG administration (up to 30 g/day) in humans has not been shown to have harmful side effects. It is not known if chronic ingestion (>6-12 months) has any deleterious effects.

Thinking About Pain Relief- Baby Care

Sunday, February 10th, 2008

It’s sensible to consider options for pain relief before labor starts, discuss what is available a few weeks in advance with your doctor and put your wishes in a birth plan. Many women like the idea of a birth with out the need for drugs, but it’s good to be prepared; you can’t predict how you’ll react when you’re in labor.

Demerol

A narcotics pain reliever given by injection. Demerol is quite strong, so you may feel sick or woozy after ward. It can also affect a baby’s breathing at delivery (though this can be treated), and makes the baby drowsy and slow to respond to stimuli.

Epidural anesthetic

An epidural block prevents pain from spreading beyond the uterus by acting as a nerve block in your spine, numbing the body from the top of the abdomen down to the toes. A fine, hollow needle is inserted into the region around the spinal cord and a thin tube known as a catheter is then threaded down in side the hollow needle. The needle is removed, leaving the catheter in position. The catheter is taped firmly in place, and anesthesia is syringed down the catheter. An epidural usually takes 10-20 minutes to be set up and the anesthetic takes effect with in a few minutes. Most hospitals have 24-hour anesthesia coverage so you shouldn’t have to prearrange an epidural.

Epidural

The anesthetist inserts a fine needle in to the epidural space the region around the spinal cord.

Tens

Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) involves having electrodes taped to your back that connect to a stimulator. You give your self small, safe amounts of electrical current to stimulate the production of endorphins, or natural painkillers.

Birth pool

Many hospitals now have pools available for use during labor to help relieve the pain. Buoyancy helps reduce the pressure on the abdomen, making your contractions more efficient, and being in water enables you to move easily in to different positions. If you want to use a birthing pool, check early on in your pregnancy to make sure that one will be available for you.

Father

Make sure you can always be contacted easily. If you have a cell phone, keep it turned on. What to take to the hospital.

A change of clothes; labor wards are very hot.

Food and drink hospital cafeterias rarely open at night.

CD player and CDs.

Camera or camcorder.

Calling card or change for a payphone, plus important numbers. (Don’t use a cell phone in the hospital.)

Mother

Labor can start any time from 36 weeks, so be prepared. Carry telephone numbers for your partner and your health care provider. Have your bag ready. What you need.

Your hospital notes.

A large T-shirt or short, loose night gown for labor.

You may also need a hot water bottle for backaches, bottled water and a natural sponge to suck, a water spray bottle to cool you, and a hand mirror to see your baby’s head as it appears.

Socks in case you’re chilly immediately after delivery.

Two front opening night gowns or pajamas, a bathrobe, and a pair of slippers.

Two packets of super sanitary pads and several pairs of cotton underpants. Some disposable underpants can also be very useful in the early days of heavy blood loss.

Properly fitted nursing bras and disposable breast pads.

Toiletries, wash cloth or sponge, and a couple of bath towels.

For your baby, you’ll need stretch suits or nighties and T-shirts, diapers, and diaper changing equipment. You may also need a blanket or shawl for your baby.

Countdown To Birth-Baby Care

Sunday, February 10th, 2008

As your due date approaches, the days may seem to drag by and you probably feel uncomfortably large. As the expectant father, you’ll be waiting for the telephone to ring with the call you’ve been waiting for.

Getting Ready

Although pregnancy is said to last 40 weeks, this is only a convenient method of calculation it’s quite normal for a baby to be born any time between 38 and 42 weeks. If your baby hasn’t been born by the official due date, don’t worry. most doctors aren’t in a hurry to induce a baby if the mother is healthy and there are no obvious problems, such as raised blood pressure. Stay active and arrange some outings and visits. It’s much better for both of you and the baby than hanging around the house feeling apprehensive.

Packing Your Hospital Bag

It’s a good idea to have everything ready for your baby’s arrival and your bag packed for the hospital three to four weeks before the due date, so that you are prepared for any eventuality. You will need to pack comfortable clothing, several pairs of underwear, toiletries, and other items, such as sanitary pads, diapers, and clothes for your baby, but ask your doctor or midwife if you’re not sure. You might want to bring along extra pillows or a couple comfort aids as well.

Getting Near Labor

In the few days before labor begins in earnest, you may notice some signs that indicate you haven’t got much longer to wait.

Feeling premenstrual

You may experience similar feelings to those before your period, such as a low, nagging backache.

Braxton hicks

You may become more aware of the painless tightening’s of the uterine wall. These are Braxton Hicks contractions, which can begin at around six months, and occur on and off during the last few weeks.

Mild diarrhea

You may have looser bowel movements as your system is affected by the increasing uterine activity.

Abdominal lightening

There may be an easing of discomfort under your ribs a feeling of lightening as your baby’s head engages in your pelvis. This may happen a week or two before the birth with a first baby, but just as often it doesn’t happen until labor.

Burst of energy

Many women experience a sudden burst of energy even if they have been very tired and sluggish for several weeks previously. You may find you want to rush around making sure everything is ready for your baby’s home coming, this is known as the nesting instinct.

Irritability

Understandably, you may become short tempered and impatient, with a definite sense that it’s time pregnancy was over.

The Stages Of Labor

Labor has three distinct stages. The first stage is when the uterine contractions pull the cervix open second stage from full dilation to when the baby is born, and third stage, until the placenta is delivered.

The first stage

During the first stage of labor, contractions begin and are established, gradually becoming stronger and lasting longer; this stage can last up to 12 hours, or even longer with a first baby. The first stage has three phases, the latent phase is the longest, lasting around eight hours. This is when the cervix thins. Then there is the active phase, when the cervix is opened up wide, and finally the transitional phase, when the cervix reaches full dilatation, before pushing your baby out. You’re most likely to need pain relief during the active phase, and you’re likely to feel a burst of energy toward the end to take you through the second stage.

The second stage

During the second stage of labor, your baby leaves the uterus and is pushed through the birth canal in to the outside world. This stage can take anything from a few minutes to two hours with a first baby, and can be exhausting.

The third stage

Thc delivery of thc placenta is the third and final stage of labor; it is almost painless, although you may feel some cramping like a severe period pain. Normally the third stage lasts 10-20 minutes. The placenta weighs about 1 lb (0.5kg) and is 8-10 inches (20-25 cm) in diameter.

Diseases of Hands-Skin Disorders

Sunday, February 10th, 2008

Allergic contact dermatitis, like atopic dermatitis, almost always begins on the dorsal surface of the fingers and hands. This predilection is most likely due to the protective effect of the thick keratin found on the palmar aspect of the fingers and hands. Allergic contact dermatitis differs from atopic dermatitis in that excoriations are less prominent and a visible eruption precedes the scratching. Before a diagnosis of allergic contact dermatitis can be proven, however, several things must occur: a suspected contactant must be identified; a positive result to patch testing must be obtained; and the patient must demonstrate improvement when the contaclant is removed. The most readily identifiable type of allergic contact dermatitis is that of nickel allergy because the emplion occurs in such close proximity to the offending ring, bracelet, or watchband. Many industrial chemicals cause allergic contact dermatitis of the hands. The agents most commonly involved are chromates and epoxy resins. Cosmetics (cinnamates, lanolin, Peruvian balsam) are occasional offenders. Soaps and detergents cause irritant, rather than allergic, contact dermatitis.

Irritant contact dermatitis is characterized by the presence of chapping, cracking, and fissuring. Inflammation, weeping, crusting, and excoriations are considerably less prominent. The changes of irritant contact dermatitis occur most commonly on the volar aspects of the fingers, but the palms and dorsal surface of the hands, particularly over the knuckles, may also be involved. The skin is dull red and often has a shiny or glistening surface. Tingling or burning pain is present; pruritus is not prominent. The diagnosis is based on the clinical appearance and on the history of frequent exposure to soap, water, or other solvents. Irritant contact dermatitis is an occupational hazard for mothers, housewives, waitresses, bartenders, and those in the health professions. A second type of irritant contact dermatitis occurs because of moisture retention and maceration under wide rings. Thus, eczematous changes around rings may be either allergic or irritant in etiology. Patch testing to metals may be necessary to differentiate between these two possibilities.

Scabies is an infrequent cause of hand eczema. It is characterized by initial development of solitary vesicles or inflammatory vesicopapules in the web spaces. From there, eczematous changes can spread onto the dorsal surface of the hands and fingers. The diagnosis is based on this distribution pattern, evidence of contagion, recovery of the mite, and the presence of typical lesions at other body sites.

Autoeczematization (or autosensitization) is a reaction pattern in which eczematous disease elsewhere on the skin induces “metastatic” eczematous lesions at some distant site. The hands, particularly the palms and fingers, are frequently involved in this reaction. A vesicular component that resembles dyshidrosis is often present. A diagnosis of autoeczematization is likely: (1 ) if vesiculation is explosive in onset, (2) if there is minimal grouping of the vesicles, and most importantly, (3) when marked eczematous disease is found on the feet or elsewhere on the body.

The diagnosis and therapy for hand eczema are complicated because more than a single process is frequently involved. Thus, dyshidrotic eczema, allergic contact dermatitis,

and scabies are often complicated by the concomitant presence of either the itch-scratch cycle (atopic dermatitis) or irritant contact dermatitis resulting from soap and water exposure. With so many processes occurring at once, it is easy to see why many clinicians give up trying to sort out the individual processes responsible for the problem and simply label it “hand eczema.” Nevertheless, since the treatment varies with each of the processes, it is important to identify them individually. As mentioned above, where this cannot be done on the basis of history and examination, it may be necessary to use a short course of systemic steroids so that the initial characteristic changes can be identified as they recur.

Pneumonia-Diseases

Sunday, February 10th, 2008

What is this condition?

Pneumonia is an acute lung inflammation in which the lungs fill with a fibrous material, impairing gas exchange. With poor gas exchange, the blood has too much carbon dioxide and too little oxygen.

People with normal lungs and adequate immune defenses usually recover fully. However, pneumonia is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States.

Classifying pneumonia

Pneumonia can be classified by location or type, as well as cause .

• Location: Bronchopneumonia involves the lungs and small airways of the respiratory tract. Lobular pneumonia involves part of a lobe of the lung. Lobar pneumonia involves an entire lobe .

• Type: Primary pneumonia occurs when a person inhales or aspirates a disease-producing microorganism; it includes pneumococcal and viral pneumonia. Secondary pneumonia may occur in someone who’s suffered lung damage from a noxious chemical or other insult, or it may be caused by the blood-borne spread of bacteria from a distant site.

What causes it?

Pneumonia can be caused by a virus, bacterium, fungus, protozoa, mycobacterium, mycoplasma, or rickettsia.

Certain factors can predispose a person to bacterial and viral pneumonia-chronic illness and debilitation, cancer (especially lung cancer), abdominal or chest surgery, atelectasis (the collapse of air sacs in the lung), the flu, common colds or other viral respiratory infections, chronic respiratory disease (such a, emphysema, chronic bronchitis, asthma, bronchiectasis, or cystic fibrosis), smoking, malnutrition, alcoholism, sickle cell disease, tracheostomy, exposure to harmful gases, aspiration, and drugs that suppress the immune system.

Factors that predispose a person to aspiration pneumonia include old age, debilitation, nasogastric tube feedings, an impaired gag reflex, poor oral hygiene, and a decreased level of consciousness.

What are its symptoms?

In the early stage, a person with bacterial pneumonia may have these classic symptoms – coughing, sputum production, chest pain, shaking, chills, and fever.

On examination, the doctor may hear an abnormal breath sound called crackles and discover signs of pleural effusion, abnormal fluid buildup in the lungs. Effusion is responsible for fever, chest pain, shortness of breath, and a nonproductive cough.

Complications of pneumonia include respiratory failure, pus accumulation in the lungs, and lung abscess. Some people develop a bacterial infection in the blood; if the infection spreads to other parts of the body, it can lead to inflammation of the brain and spinal cord membranes, inflammation of the heart’s interior lining, and inflammation of the sac surrounding the heart.

How is it diagnosed?

The doctor suspects pneumonia if the person has typical symptoms and physical exam results, along with a chest X-ray showing pulmonary infiltrates (abnormal substances in the lungs), and sputum containing acute inflammatory cells. If the person has pleural effusions, the doctor withdraws some fluid from the chest to analyze for signs of infection. Occasionally, the doctor obtains a sample of respiratory airway secretions or inserts an instrument called a bronchoscope into the airway to obtain materials for smear and culture. The person’s response to antibiotics also provides important dues to the presence of pneumonia.

How is it treated?

Pneumonia is treated with antimicrobial drugs, which vary with the cause of the disease. Humidified oxygen therapy is given if the person has too little oxygen in the blood, and mechanical ventilation is used to treat respiratory failure. Other supportive measures include a high-calorie diet, adequate fluid intake, bed rest, and pain relievers to relieve chest pain. These supportive measures can increase the person’s comfort, avoid complications, and speed recovery. To help remove secretions, the person may be taught to cough and perform deep-breathing exercises.

What can a person with pneumonia do?

• To avoid giving others your infection, dispose of secretions properly. Sneeze and cough into a disposable tissue .

• To prevent a recurrence of pneumonia, don’t use antimicrobial drugs during minor viral infections, because this may lead to antibiotic-resistant bacteria in the upper airway. If you then develop pneumonia, you may need to take more toxic drugs to get rid of the orgamsms.

• Get yearly flu shots and Pneumovax (pneumococcal vaccine) if you have asthma, chronic bronchitis, emphysema, chronic heart disease, or sickle cell disease.

Pneumonia is an acute lung inflammation in which the lungs fill with a fibrous material, impairing gas exchange. With poor gas exchange, the blood has too much carbon dioxide and too little oxygen.

Baby Care – Options For Prenatal Care

Sunday, February 10th, 2008

Prenatal classes are helpful and supportive for you both.

What classes do

They will help explain a lot of the choices available before, during, and after the birth and will tell you about labor, birth, and baby care. You’ll also meet other expectant parents with due dates near yours.

Where to find classes

If you’re planning a hospital delivery, hospital based classes can be useful, they’ll help familiarize you with procedures and will include a tour of the labor ward. Child birth educators generally offer classes in hospitals as well as birthing centers, but some communities offer other local venues as well. Ask friends who have young babies to recommend a good class that’s easy to get to. Most child birth classes include guidance on preparing your self for an active birth, in which your partner or birth coach is also involved.

There’s now a huge choice in maternity care, although how wide the choice is will depend on what’s available in your area. Look into your prenatal options also means looking at your birth options.

Who Can Deliver Care?

Once you know you’re pregnant, your first call will probably be to your family doctor or gynecologist. He or she may confirm the pregnancy with another test, take your blood pressure, and ask when your last period was to work out the due date. Your doctor will tell you the different options for prenatal care available in your area, and you can also talk through where the baby will be born, since these are often linked. Don’t feel you have to make your mind up on any of these issues immediately go away and think about the possibilities before finalizing details.

Hospital care

You’ll be cared for by hospital based doctors, your obstetrician and or midwife. The prenatal care may lack the informality of other options, but if you have any complications, have an existing medical condition, or are having twins, it’s probably the wisest choice to have your pregnancy monitored by professionals in this setting.

Midwives

In many places, prenatal care is given almost entirely by midwives who are based either in a free standing site dedicated to prenatal care labor and delivery or in a hospital. The comfortable, home like feeling of midwife centers is a comfort to many women who would like to have a natural birth out side of a hospital setting. Many women benefit from building a relationship with the midwives who will also deliver their babies.

Your doctor or obstetrician’s office

You’ll have consultations, checkups, and tests through out your pregnancy to make sure you and your baby are doing fine. Most pregnancies are perfectly normal, but its vital to have these check up to make sure all is well and to spot possible problems early, before any harm is done. Here, too, you will have many opportunities to get to know and bond with the professional who will be on hand to deliver your baby when the time comes.

Equipment-Fitness

Sunday, February 10th, 2008

I wonder what fitness equipment you have around your house at the moment. Maybe an old set of dumbbells, a skipping rope, some ankle weights, a mat, a bench or a fitball? And if you have this kit, is it ready for action? Has it been used recently?

It is an integral part of turning over a new leaf in your fitness regime. You plan what you want to achieve and then go out and buy the kit that will help you reach your goals. Then, for whatever reason, the kit does not get used. Maybe you do not know quite what exercises to do with it. You may be worried about getting it wrong and injuring yourself or perhaps you just do not have the space or the time for exercising at home. Then the weights gather dust, the exercise bike ends up with clothes strewn over it, and the multi-gym sits in the garage getting rusty.

Spending money on unnecessary fitness kit is frustrating and the equipment can end up haunting you and making you feel guilty for spending the money and not using it. All this can be prevented by asking yourself a few questions before you part with any cash.

If I buy this piece of fitness equipment, what will I actually do with it?

Where will I use this kit?

Where will I store this kit?

If I were to use this kit in the next seven days, when would I use it and what would I use it for?

If you cannot answer these questions quickly and easily, keep your money in your pocket. If you cannot think of what you would do with the kit, you need to do more research before you buy. You need to be able to visualize yourself putting your kit into action. Where will you be? In the bedroom, the living room, the garden? Can you imagine yourself using your kit around the house? If you cannot, chances are, you never will. You need to have somewhere handy you can store your kit. If possible it is good to get it out of sight so that your house still feels like a home and not a gym, but not so out of sight that it is out of mind as well. All home fitness kit should be hidden when you want it to be, and accessible when it is time to use it.

Finally, think about when you will be able to get started with your new kit. If you cannot find an opportunity to use it within the next seven days, the chances are that you will not be using it much beyond this first week.

Think carefully about the fitness programme you are about to embark on and what exactly you have decided it will consist of. Then you can clearly decide what kit, if any, you need to buy.

The options for exercising at home are endless and the main benefit is that you can create a time efficient workout regime with no travel time. With planning, a home fitness routine can be very effective. For more information on where to buy your kit, please refer to the fitness resources section at the end of the site.

Taking Care Of Your Self

Sunday, February 10th, 2008

Balancing Your Diet. Try to follow these tips:

Eat complex carbohydrates, such as pasta, potatoes, or legumes (beans and lentils), for energy.

Eat fish, poultry, dairy products, whole grain cereals, seeds, legumes for protein, for the baby’s growth.

Don’t cut out fat altogether, but don’t eat too much, either.

Get vitamin C daily from raw fruit and vegetables, and the B complex from whole grains, nuts, legumes, green vegetables, dairy products, eggs, oily fish, and meat.

Eat red meat, fish, egg yolks, apricots, and cereals for iron, to maintain red blood cells.

Food Safety

Take extra care with food hygiene:

Listeria is a rare bacterium found in products made with unpasteurized milk, liver, pre cooked meals, and undercooked meat. Avoid these infection may result in miscarriage or still birth.

Salmonella is a bacterial infection found in eggs and chicken that causes fever, severe diarrhea, and abdominal pain. Cook food thoroughly to destroy it.

Toxoplasmosis is caused by a parasite in cat and dog feces, and in raw meat. It can cause birth defects. Cook meat thoroughly, wash hands after handling pets, and wear gloves when gardening.

Pregnancy is natural and women’s bodies are designed to accommodate it. However, your body does have to work hard, so it’s important to eat well and keep active to help it to cope.

Weight And Diet

Your body uses up a lot of energy during pregnancy, and you need to eat well to fuel your requirements and those of your growing baby. You could reasonably increase your in take of food by 200-300 calories a day and expect to put on 20-30 1b (9-15 kg) in weight, much of which is accounted for by the baby, uterus, and amniotic fluid. Pregnancy is not a time to go on a diet, but you should also forget the myth about eating for two, the rule is to eat to satisfy your hunger, and no more. Later in pregnancy, you may find you simply can’t take in much food at any one time, so eat little and often. Keep healthy snacks, such as dried fruit, rice cakes, crisp breads, and hard fruits in your bag, car, or office.

Body Maintenance

The pregnancy hormones have profound effects on teeth, hair, nails, and skin, so don’t be surprised by some temporary changes.

Teeth

Progester one makes the gums soft, so they may bleed more easily. Take care of your teeth and gums, and visit your dentist at the start of your pregnancy. Make sure you tell him you are pregnant, in case he wants to take x-rays, these may be dangerous to the developing embryo. If x-rays are necessary, however, special shielding is used to protect the embryo.

Hair and nails

Straight hair can become curly, and vice versa. Hair grows and falls in phases pregnancy often prolongs the growth phase, making thin hair thick and glossy, whereas thick hair may become dry and unmanageable. The down side is that you’ll experience hair loss after the birth, although it’ll grow back eventually. Although they grow faster, nails also become brittle. Keep them short and use creams to keep them moist.

Skin

Estrogen gives your skin the legendary bloom of pregnancy, but dry skin becomes drier and greasy skin more oily. Patches of brown pigment (chloasma) may appear on your face and neck but will eventually fade. All skins deepen in color with browning of the nipples and a line down the abdomen. Tiny dilated capillaries (spider naevi) on the face are common but disappear later. Stretch marks on the breasts, thighs, and abdomen are very common. But most marks will fade after the birth.

Assessing For Your Health

Sunday, February 10th, 2008

Mammography, an x-ray examination of the breast, detects early signs of breast cancer. The American Cancer Society recommends that mammography screening begin by age 40. Women ages 40 to 49 should get a mammogram every 1 to 2 years, depending on physical and mammographic findings. Women age 50 and older should get a mammogram yearly. High-risk women may be advised to have mammograms more often and at an earlier age.

Pelvic examination and Pap smears detect abnormalities of the ovaries, uterus, and cervix. The American Cancer Society recommends an annual Pap test starting at age 18 or when sexual activity begins, whichever comes first. Pap smears should not be done during the menstrual period. The test is more accurate during the first half of the cycle if oral contraceptives are taken. Midcycle is preferred in most other menstruating women. Regardless of when the test is done, the technician reading the smear must know whether you are taking oral contraceptives or estrogen-replacement therapy and when the last menstrual period began. Only with this information can the smear be accurately interpreted.

A complete eye examination includes a test for visual acuity; tonometry, a painless test for glaucoma; and cataract check. The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends a complete eye examination from puberty to age 40 only if eye discomfort or vision problems occur. After age 40 a glaucoma test and cataract (a clouding over the lens) check should be done every 2 to 3 years.

Electrocardiograms (ECGs) are used to detect irregularities of the heart. Although there is some debate about its use as a routine screening procedure for asymptomatic (without symptoms) low-risk individuals, an ECG reading by age 35 provides a point for subsequent comparisons. Chest pain, hypertension, and symptoms of cardiovascular disease justify earlier ECGs. Stress tests use ECG to assess how the heart functions under the stress of exercise and are routine when symptoms are present.

Chest x-ray examinations are valuable diagnostic tools for people with chest symptoms, respiratory diseases, and heart problems. For people without symptoms, their routine use is questionable. Several groups of experts, including those associated with the Food and Drug Administration, recommend discontinuation of chest x-ray examinations in most cases. However, if you go to a hospital or often your doctor’s office, you can anticipate a chest x-ray study more out of the need to comply with business policy than for diagnostic potential. Avoid a chest x-ray test if you may be pregnant.

Prostate cancer tests detect prostate cancer, the most common cancer among men. Men 40 years of age and older should have an annual digital rectal examination. Combined with a blood test that looks for prostate specific antigens (PSA), the digital examination significantly improves the chances of detecting early signs of cancer. The blood test for PSA should be performed annually on men age 50 and 01der.

An HIV test is recommended for people who think they may have been infected with the HIV virus. This includes people who have had unprotected sex or a blood transfusion, have used IV drugs, or have participated in high-risk behaviors. After the blood test, these people should avoid high-risk behavior for 6 months to a year and then retest.
Immunization for Adults

Many people believe that immunizations (administration of a preparation or vaccine, usually in the form of injections, for providing immunity or preventing a disease) are only for children. Consequently, many thousands of adults die every year of diseases they would not have acquired if they had received standard vaccines. For example, 20,000 people aged 65 and above die prematurely because they fail to get an annual flu shot. 24 Deaths from measles, rubella, mumps, tetanus, and diphtheria affect adults more than children-a complete reversal of 30 years ago. In addition, 40,000 people die each year from pneumococcal infections; influenza viruses kill 20,000 more. Of the 300,000 people who contract hepatitis E, 10,000 are admitted to a hospital and about 5000 die.

Adult immunization is recommended to prevent or ameliorate influenza, pneumonia, hepatitis B measles, rubella (German measles), tetanus, and diphtheria.

A chicken pox vaccine was approved in the spring of 1995. Children under can be immunized with a single injection. Adults get two shots, 4 to 6 weeks apart. The vaccine is recommended for adults who come into contact with susceptible children, such as health-care workers, day-care center employees, and elementary school teachers.

Importance of Vision – A reason for proper Eye Care

Sunday, February 10th, 2008

Eyes are the most important organ of our body. That gives us a vision to see the beauty of nature. They help us to perform our daily chores, its one of our assets, and we should take proper care of these assets like our other valuable things. So much of what we learn, what we experience, what we enjoy comes to us through our eyes. Healthy sight is something to be cherished, maintained and protected. It takes very less effort to keep this enjoyment forever with a proper care everyday.

Eye care at work
In our new technology blind world many of us spend our most of the time sitting in front of a computer, laptop or television screen. Continuous glaze decreases moisture in eyes and causes dryness. It is important to take breaks to give proper rest to our eyes.

We should also look away periodically from our computer screen during long working hours. Use of antiglare screens, or anti glares glasses is recommended to avoid problems caused by computer screen radiations. The best way is to choose a liquid crystal display screen, which is less harmful than traditional cathode tube monitors.

Eye care on move

Smoke and dust can cause itching in eyes, to wear sunglasses is the best option to protect eyes from direct sunlight, and dust, Its better to carry a handkerchief to wipe eyes and eyelids in case of dust problems. Fitness – First Thing In The Morning

Saturday, February 9th, 2008

Before you get up in the morning practise tightening your pelvic floor and contracting your tummy muscles while you lie in bed. Hold all the muscles tight for three deep breaths and then relax. Do this ten times each morning and you will be toning up your tummy without even having to stand up.

While lying in bed, take three deep breaths to get some oxygen into your lungs then tighten your abdominal muscles and do two sets of 10 gentle crunches before you get out of bed.

As you get up, sit on the edge of the bed and put a pillow between your knees. Stretch your arms up above you while squeezing your thighs together 15 times to tone your legs.

When you are out of the bed, take time to make it properly.

This is activity that will burn a few extra calories.

When you are brushing your teeth, make good use of the time by doing some shallow lunges as you brush.

Exercise On The Go

If you travel to work by tube, walk up the escalators two steps at a time. By taking larger strides you will involve your bottom more in your stair climbing and give your legs and lungs more of a workout. If you do not use the escalators you can try this at home in the evening by climbing your stairs 10 times.

Hold your tummy in and squeeze your bottom, wherever you are.

If you are waiting for a bus or a train, isolate different muscles around your body and contract and relax them in turn.

Make every journey a mini-fitness fix. Pick up your pace walking to the station, to the sandwich shop, or even to the wine bar. You will know you have done it right if you are slightly out of breath and can feel your heart racing by the time you get to your destination. Remember this is not about running, just about saying goodbye to the casual stroll and making the most of being on the move.

If you are in the car, always practise good posture by tightening your tummy muscles and keeping your shoulders relaxed.

If you spend the day in an office, take regular screen breaks and move around, even if you do not need to go anywhere. Extra journeys mean extra calories burnt which all add up over the course of a day.
