7 Deadly SEO Sins – Are You Sure You Have A Clean Chit?
March 1st, 2009 byThe one certainty about SEO processes is that it provides no guarantee. No
matter how skilled an SEO professional is or how experienced an SEO agency
is, when it comes to written word, no one can give assurances.
Search Engine Optimization is a gradual process. There is no sure fire way
to catapult your website to the top slots of search engine results. It is rather
a result of persistent efforts in the right direction.
However, as much as you steer ahead with the right kind of efforts, so much
do you lag behind with the wrong ones! Here are 7 sins you should absolutely
refrain from:
Targeting Search Engines over Audiences
Search engine optimization is the process of making a website rank well in
search results so as to attract more visitor traffic. The prime objective of
SEO is to attract traffic. However, in a bid to get themselves a good ranking
in search results, many websites forget this.
Stuffing too many keywords into your web pages with no care for the content
quality may fetch you short term SEO results but until and unless visitors
like the content, there is no way you can convince them to make a purchase.
On the other side, if visitors really like your content the website would
obviously become popular and top the search engine charts.
Link Spamming
Don’t be desperate for links. Websites
often chase too many links by randomly answering questions on forums or posting
useless comments on blogs
in a bid to increase their number of external links.
Search engines determine the quality of links by the authority of websites
they come from. So spurious methods of link spamming techniques have no relevance
at all.
No Heed to Link Text
Anchor text of links should be written
with utmost caution. This is because search engines determine the internal
links through the contents of the anchor
text. For example in place of something like ‘Click Here’ always
use descriptive text like ‘Click here for more articles on Web Design & Development’.
No Progress Track
To measure the success (or failure) of your SEO campaign, it is very important
you have an effective mechanism to measure the progress. Just seeing organic
results for your website is no measure of your website success. Rather there
are other performance metrics like number of sales; new search inclusions are
all important parameters to measure the success of the SEO campaigns.
Wrong Choice of Keywords
Companies that promise guaranteed
top listings no doubt are taking you for a ride. Their prime strategy is the
wrong choice of keywords. A company selling
skin care products should rank well for ‘skin care products’ and
not for ‘skin care products 12345’
Ideal keywords for a website should be what the company is known for and what
potential audiences search for.
No SEO Strategy
An SEO strategy is very essential for the success of the SEO project. Cut
out clear objectives for the project and work at achieving short term goals
to achieve the prime one.

The point about not writing for people rather than search engines is a particularly good one. In the past, when search engines weren’t that sophisticated, webmasters might have gained benefits from cramming their content with keywords, etc. But now, there’s no benefit to be had because the algorithms are so complex and subtle. It’s as if Google is a discerning human reader now!
