Once I am invited to conduct a training session for a senior management team of one leading service industry in Thailand on a topic of service management.  The team opens the training by telling me that they are the second best compared to another brand who is also the leading brand in Thailand in terms of “service excellence”.  I ask how they know and what are the criteria used to measure that outcome.  The director who is responsible for quality assurance answers me that they have the international external auditor from abroad to audit their staff on a yearly basis.  The result said almost 100% of our staff do everything we ask them to do, basically staff do comply with the standards. Moreover, they as a management walk around and witness that those good service behaviours are being practiced.  Sound good, isn’t it?

So, my hypothesis is;

- The auditor will still give full score if their staff “wai” (Thai greeting gesture) to the guest with a long face.  (As a trainer / consultant, I will surely not recommend this type of audit for the service excellence aspect).

- And, normally Thai staff will “Wai” and bend their heads down to a manager rather than to a guest.  That is a Thai hierarchical practice because the job security is traditionally not very much depending on performance but it depends on how obedient one is onwards his/her boss.   I experience many times that between a guest and a manager, Thai staff will surely greet the manager first.  That is why many managers are so sure that they staff comply with set standards.

I say to this group of senior managers in the session that “if the-mentioned audit outcome and the management experience strongly urge you to believe that your service is good enough.  As a customer, I will say wrong”.   I like to comment here two things: firstly, some Thai owner / managers believe in imported products from a handbag to a consultant.  A consultant who makes Thai people believe through their nice beautiful accent and a sharp nose that they know everything.  I wish actually to ask – will the audit outcome truly reflect guest satisfaction?  The international external auditor must have this answer.   Secondly, most obstacles of Thai’s service come from its cultural issues.   Therefore, by now, Thai managers should realize that improvement in service and changes in attitude are to “start” with the boss and therefore the improvement will “stop” with the boss too.

Hire a tutor for your children if you think they need some one on one assistance with one or more of their courses.  This will help to offset any difficulties your child is having as a result of the larger classrooms associated with public schools.  Hiring a tutor will help to make certain that your child is not lost in the crowd.  There might even be resources through your school district for free or low cost tutoring services.

Encourage your children to participate in one or more extracurricular activities.   When it comes time for your child to apply for college, the colleges will look for students who have been involved in sports and/or other activities at school.  Being an active participant in activities throughout your child’s school career, can help them to compete with students applying to college from a private school.

If your son or daughter does very well in school, consider asking them to attend advanced courses.  Most schools offer Honours classes.  In addition, your child can consider taking one or more Advanced Placement courses in high.  AP courses allow your child to complete coursework on a college level.  Advanced Placement tests are administered at the end of the year.  Students who earn high scores on the test will receive college credit for the class.

Some parents might believe that your child is at a disadvantage if they do not attend a private school.  This is not the case at all.  A child can receive an excellent education if they work hard and study well.  You can help your child to get the most out of their public education by being actively involved in their education and frequently involved at their school.

This is a perfect late spring supper using ingredients that are bursting with seasonal flavour.  I prefer to use a shallot in this recipe as it has a mild and concentrated flavour and won’t overpower the other delicate vegetables, but of course a small onion could be used in  place of the shallot.

Serves 4

Ingredients

• 50g butter
• 1 shallot finely chopped
• 300g fresh peas (frozen are fine if you can’t get fresh)
• 1 little gem lettuce, shredded
• salt and freshly ground black pepper
• 150ml single cream
• 400g penne pasta
• 75g Parmesan, freshly grated

Method

Bring a large pan of salted water to the boil and cook the pasta until tender.

While the pasta is cooking melt the butter in a large frying pan.  Add the shallots, peas and fry on a gentle heat until the vegetables are getting soft.  Add the lettuce and cook for a further 5 minutes until soft.  The vegetables may need a little water adding if it looks like they are drying out.  Season with salt and pepper.

Warm the cream gently, but do not boil.

Drain the pasta and return to the pan.  Stir through the cream, and mix in the vegetables.  Add half the Parmesan and give it another gentle stir.  Serve at once and sprinkle with the rest of the cheese.

In some ways small business owners and entrepreneurs have been relegated to orphan status since the collapse of the economy in 2008. Despite their collective importance to our economic well being, policy makers did little or nothing to include them in the bailout. Even though their combined value outdistanced Wall Street firms in terms of stability, growth and jobs, that fact alone was not enough for admission into the inner circle.

The first multi-billion dollar bailout focused on Wall Street’s Big Boys. The AIGs, the Citibanks and the Goldman Sachs were all deemed too big and too important to undo their own mess. They clearly were not ready to act responsibly and make the necessary adjustments. Self correction is just not their thing. Turns out that Wall Streeters have a far greater sense of entitlement than the much criticized folks on the low end of the totem pole.

Left in the lurch in all this were small business owners. They could no longer depend on the unsecured loans and unsecured credit that traditionally enabled them to maintain their cash flow. The ripple effect of the credit squeeze radiated out with alarming consequences. Unsecured business loans were the ideal vehicle for small businesses with temporary cash flow credit needs.

Unsecured loans were relatively easy to get. They did not put business assets at risk. They provided the necessary cash flow for stability and growth. Loan and credit line approvals were quickly granted because the process itself remained unclogged by bureaucratic hoops. And the repayment time could be extended out as far as 60 months.

While unsecured debt and credit lines, at first glance, might appear to be a risky venture for lending institutions, in fact just the opposite is true. While business owners and entrepreneurs did not have to provide collateral for these loans, a good chunk of the loan amount was guaranteed. That is a big part of the reason why unsecured loans and credit lines were so efficient.

The Small Business Administration (SBA) guaranteed 85 percent of the loan value. For lending institutions and the economy in general, it was a win-win situation. Lenders knew that if push came to shove and the worst happened, they would get back 85 percent of the failed loan. The remaining 15 percent might seem like a great deal of money at risk when considered collectively, but small business unsecured loans and lines of credit are individual entities.

Unlike the Wall Street conglomerates, a failed small business loan does not mean billions of dollars at risk along with thousands of job losses. Unsecured small business loans generally range between $50,000 and $500,000. Jobs at risk from failed businesses are more likely to count below 100 than in the thousands. And, when all is said and done, the track records of unsecured business loan holders is very good.

For all of those reasons it makes sense that the initial bailout should have directed at least a portion of the funding specifically for unsecured business loans and lines of credit. Delaying attention to the cash flow problems of Main Street businesses has resulted in time and jobs lost. The administration that was sworn in in January 2009 has tried to ameliorate the situation by making credit more available.

Whereas the first bailout made no demands on how financial institutions would use the billions of dollars that fell into their laps, the second bailout has tried to rectify that. Financial institutions accepting bailout money are required to publicly account for how the funds are being used. They must also report monthly on funds made available to small business owners for unsecured loans and credit lines. In addition, such loans are even more risk adverse. The SBA guarantee has been increased from 85 percent to 90 percent, making it even more attractive to free up credit.

Those seeking unsecured loans and lines of credit should find it easier to do so. Bailout money is still unavailable directly to small businesses. But because the government is now requiring that Wall Street hot shots put on their big boy pants and become the solution rather than the problem, unsecured loans and unsecured credit is beginning to filter down as it should.

Top 10 tips to burn more calories during your normal day

Wouldn’t it be great if we could burn more calories without exercising, eating less, or changing our daily routine? (If I read ‘get off the bus a stop early’ anywhere else I will scream!)

The tips below will enable us to do just that. Okay, it’s not going to be a huge amount, you won’t lose 5lb in a week following these, but it all adds up, and if we burn a few extra calories everyday we can have a treat at the weekend. Mine is usually a glass of wine……yours could be chocolate, cake, or you could be very virtuous and just lose an extra lb or 2 over a few weeks.

1. FIDGET. Tap your feet, jiggle your leg, gesticulate when you talk, drum your fingers and wiggle your toes. Apparently fidgeting can burn an extra 350 calories a day. That is a lot!!

1. SIT UP STRAIGHT. When we sit up straight, we use more muscles around the core area – stomach and lower back. This uses more calories in itself and as muscles become stronger we burn more calories when doing nothing!

1. DRINK COLD WATER. When we drink cold things our bodies use calories to warm them up. And water is really good for us in loads of other ways too.

1. LAUGH. Laughing uses lots of muscles, so as well as feeling good we are burning calories.

1. PUT THE SHOWER ON COLD FOR A FEW SECONDS. Not so nice this one but a blast for a few seconds of cold water burns calories as we warm up.

1. EAT CHILLI. Or other spicy foods as they cause our metabolism to speed up

1. SING. Loudly, when you are cleaning, cooking, sitting in the car. Just make sure the windows are shut if you are tone deaf like me!

1. DO 10 SQUATS WHEN CLEANING YOUR TEETH. Easy enough but cleaning teeth twice a day = 20 squats a day = toned bum and legs in no time!

1. KISS. Much nicer, kissing burns calories, yey!

1. GET OFF THE BUS A STOP EARLY. Only joking, but do try and be more active and stand whenever you can, so when your on the phone, ironing, doing your make up etc, get up. You use about an extra 40 calories standing instead of sitting.
