Handyman – a skilled person

Monday, May 31st, 2010

A handyman is a skilled person, who is capable of doing variety of repairs involving knowledge of many trades like plumbing, electrical installations, carpentry and maintenance works. A handyman or a handyperson is a professional who can perform various tasks for customer’s satisfaction. Works for a handyman may range from minor fitting works to major construction works. There are various companies that allow customers to hire licensed handymen for their construction and repair works. Big firms and corporations avoid hiring handymen who are not insured.

Choosing a Handyman

It is not so difficult to choose someone to do house maintenance works. However, choosing the right handyperson can be a tricky task. In some cases, people often complain that they got scammed by a poor professional. So, how to choose the right person? The best thing to find the right handyperson is to go with the referrals of friends and neighbours. The credibility of a handyman can be known from the past works he has done for our friends and neighbours.

Nowadays, many handymen have training certificates from certain courses offered by technical schools. Handypersons can be selected on the basis of their qualifications and certificates. However, this should not be the only criterion to determine the ability of handypersons. There could be many skilled and experienced handypersons, who may not have any formal certification from technical schools or other institutions. It is vital to check whether the handyman is insured and licensed. Handyman jobs do have certain risk factors like injuries for example, and hence insurance is a must.

While most of the handymen are individuals, there are various handyman companies that employ handymen on a contract basis. There are few safety factors involved in choosing a handyman from handyman companies. It is vital to check the skills of a handyman based on the work requirements. Handymen do have their own comfort zones in different work areas. However, most of the handypersons are multi-skilled in different areas like plumbing, carpentry, electrical works, tiling and other fixing works. Budget is also an important factor for hiring a handyman. Handyman companies have a fixed price for different maintenance works but negotiable prices can be offered depending on the work to be performed.

Benefits

Handyman services can let us free from different types of home repair works that remain untouched for a long period of time. Hiring a professional is much more helpful than trying a hand in unknown works. Handyman services, if used regularly, can help us to avoid certain problems, sometimes in the very initial stages. Most importantly, hiring a handyman ensures time saving, compared to any other DIY methods.

Painting and Decorating – Enhances look of your house

Sunday, May 30th, 2010

Interior house decoration involves plenty of different works. Painting is considered to be the basic form of home décor. Whether it is a tiny dwelling or an extravagant luxury building, painting plays a major role in determining the beauty of a house. Home decoration involves various other requirements like good furniture, lighting, floor covering and other accessories. However, painting is considered to be the key ingredient in a house decorating.

Some people prefer wallpaper over painting mainly because of the range of patterns in it. Wallpapers are available with plenty of styles, colours and patterns. Wallpaper gives an incomparable look to the home and it can also be used on walls that are not flat. However, it is not so easy to repair wallpaper when it gets damaged. Most of the wallpapers cannot be cleaned effectively and it is costly to replace them. Paints, on the other hand, can be handled easily. Quick drying washable paints are available everywhere and this can help in cleaning the walls effectively. Paints are quite cheap, compared to wallpapers, and can be replaced easily in an affordable way.

Both wallpapers and paints have their own pros and cons. Choosing between the two of them is a matter of individual choice. The major issue in home decoration is the style and design. Decoration should be well-planned based on different factors like budget, benefits, features, timescale and supplies. Choosing the right colour is a crucial thing in wall painting process. Different colours have the ability to create different moods and they should be chosen accordingly. Colours of other accessories like tiles and carpets may have a major impact in providing the right look of the house. Research on different colours can be helpful in choosing the right one.

Quality of the paint should also be considered to provide the right look of the interior. Some paints may fade out easily and it gives an awful look to the house if it gets worn out. Painting materials like brushes and other equipments should be in good quality to ensure fine appearance. Paints should be applied by a skilled and experienced person. Improper painting texture can affect the beauty of a house. Paints should be applied on a flat surface or else it may provide a horrible appearance to the walls. Different innovative ideas in interior home decoration can be helpful in decorating a house with good colour tone.

Tips for Your Postcard Templates

Friday, May 28th, 2010

Templates give a company the ability to create larger numbers of advertisements much faster than they would otherwise be able to. Rather than have to create a completely new ad each time, they can bring out existing templates to keep the process simple and easier.

One potential problem, however, is the risk that people will begin to notice and dislike the repetition that will naturally develop if one is used too often. For some forms of advertising, this does not matter quite as much, because they are long enough to allow you to make several visual changes to mask the fact that the template is the same.

With postcard templates, you do not have this same luxury.

Because a postcard is so small, you have fewer things you can change about it. Your customers will quickly notice a single template because of the repetition it will create. Most only have three or four different things on the front of it. Just rearranging them will not lead to a wide variety.

This leads to one of the pros and cons of postcard templates. The con is what I just listed, but the pro is that postcards are naturally easy to design.

This means you can more conveniently create three or four different templates, if not more, to cycle between. Going with a system like this you can have distinctively different ones for each of your postcards, and then within each, you can make things more varied by altering where you put images and text each time you use them.

The best kinds of templates are the ones that will give you a large amount of flexibility in terms of what goes where on the postcard. The more variation you can get out of a single template the better it will serve you, which is why I would suggest spending a lot more time designing it than you would normally spend on just a single postcard.

The number of templates you need, along with how often you update them, will depend entirely on how often you send them out. If you only do one template, once a month rather than three or four, it might last for a few years. If you send them out biweekly or more, than you will need to alter or update them every year or six months at least.

Remember too that the more complicated and unique your template is the easier it will be to spot again when you only change around a few things. Good ones lend themselves well to multiple arrangements without tipping people off to the fact that it is the same. Be creative, but do not get so carried away you end up with one that is only meant for a single situation.

Katie Marcus writes about the postcard templates technologies used by businesses for their marketing and advertising campaigns.

Tips to Buying Food Online

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

Did you know that you could buy food online? I was amazed when I discovered this fact. There are hundreds of different food websites on the internet, all of which offer great deals and promotions. So no matter what you are in the mood for, you can find it online. You can choose from steaks, lobsters, fruit, wine, chocolates, cakes, coffee, and much more.

What is available? You may be surprised to find out that almost any item that you desire can be purchased online. Many sites offer discount grocery deliveries, as well as gourmet treats. If you want a cheap elegant dinner date, try ordering two live Maine lobsters! They will be shipped to your doorstep within 24 hours, complete with cooking instructions. You can make it surf and turf by adding some Omaha steaks to the menu. Top it off with a bottle of wine and imported chocolates. All purchased online, for less than you would think! The trick to buying food online is to look for the best deals and promotions.

A good food delivery site will have many important features. First you want to find someone that has been around for a while. I like the selection available at couponchief.com. They only work with the best sites, and you can be sure that you are getting a good deal. Second look at their prices and selection. Most sites will offer various promotions and coupons for repeat customers. So if you get hooked on that fancy chocolate, it may be cheaper the next batch that you order. You can also find coupon codes that may give you free shipping or 15% off the next purchase. Last, make sure to factor in the shipping costs. Good sites offers free shipping anywhere in the country. Most perishable items will need to be specially packed and rush delivered.

Buying food online is a great way to get a good discount. Websites have lower overhead and are able to give you the same product your local grocery store can, at a fraction of the retail price. What a great deal! And with the wide assortment and free shipping, you can’t pass up buying food online. Consider sending a shipment of wine or steaks for cheap, easy gift giving. Most people love food gifts, so you can’t go wrong.

Stop Making Errors to Achieve an Effective Marketing Strategy

Monday, May 24th, 2010

Errors lead to ineffective marketing campaigns both in your standard and color posters. Moreover, even when you are frustrated by the way your marketing tools turned out, you cannot do anything about the fact that you still have to pay for it.

This may sound unfair but that is just the way it is when you do not ensure that you have quality proof before you let your poster printing company run your order. The earlier you detect the errors in your marketing collaterals, the more chances you have that your marketing collaterals would come out the way you want them to.

So do not let inefficiency on your part detract you from having excellent color posters from your poster printing. Here are some helpful hints on how you can do a better job of ensuring that you have quality results from your printer:

Do not put too many details that contrast with a very strong background.

Make sure that if you have a strong background, you do not include too many details as it can distract your readers to the most important element in your collateral – your message. Too many details on a multi-patterned background just spell disaster for your collateral. Not only will it create clutter to your design, it would also make it difficult for your target audience to understand your message clearly and quickly.

Do not apply too much color.

Sure, color can make for an excellent visual attraction. But too many is too much for comfort. Not to mention that again, it adds clutter to your design and message. You leave your target clients too distracted with your shades that they get confused, and worse, ignore your message altogether.

Do not go scattering your ideas.

Coherence is the way to get your readers to understand your message right away. Be consistent and clear with your message that your target readers do not get lost in all the clutter in your marketing collateral. Provide ample white space to keep your readers from getting a headache. Give them time to breathe in between your elements so they can easily take in whatever message you have for them.

Here is the point: As they say, an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure. If you can rectify any error or slip-ups as early as before your printing company can put to press your poster printing order, the faster it is for you to get your results, not to mention that you can have a cheaper cost to your order.

Catering in the Credit Crunch

Saturday, May 22nd, 2010

The current financial crisis, or ‘Credit Crunch’ as it has become popularly known, has had an impact on how people go about their lives.  At the moment, the majority of customers are actively seeking good value for money in items they buy, from food to clothes and cars.  Fear of redundancy or actual redundancy has seen more and more people saving for a rainy day or just lacking their usual disposable income, which can lead to problems for those in the hospitality industry.

In order to stay afloat, many restaurant owners have to introduce better special offers than ever before.  Competition between eateries can become quite intense, as they all know that customers will attend those which offer the best quality food at a very reasonable price.  Members of the public still want to go out and enjoy good food and companionship of loved ones, possibly even more so to cheer them up through the recession, so owners of restaurants need to find ways in which to supply good value.

In order to pass on savings, there is a need for businesses to purchase supplies at reasonable cost.  There is often no need to compromise on quality – those who stock cheap catering equipment often offer good value for money, especially when it comes to bulk orders.  Many can provide speedy delivery (some within 48 hours depending on stock levels), which is either low cost or even free.  Ordering in bulk is often the most cost efficient and practical means of achieving savings, both through deals and in terms of delivery.  In order to save even more costs long term, upgrading to newer, more fuel efficient refrigeration units, freezers and related items can be of benefit, whilst they often perform better than older counterparts.  Online distributors of cheap catering equipment often offer a range of items to meet numerous needs, for example lighting, cleaning and laundry products.  It is possible to get the majority of necessary non consumable products from one retailer, allowing for more bulk purchases and often greater savings.  The more savings a business makes, the more it has the potential to pass savings on to customers.

Often contacting retailers of cheap catering equipment direct by telephone or email is advisable.  They will have information about all their products, and can advise further on deals and delivery.  It is important not to compromise on quality when ordering catering equipment – some items may need to last for some time, and will need to be able to perform under the pressure in a professional kitchen, being used several times a day, seven days a week.  Without reliable catering equipment, staff can be placed under excessive stress and can impact on how well food is prepared and how hygienic the kitchen environment is.  When choosing cheap catering equipment, consider quality as well as price.

Those who eat out are becoming increasingly well informed about food and diet in general, and expect those who serve them to meet their needs.  With good quality catering equipment, restaurateurs can consider how to meet demand without worrying about too many problems in the kitchen.

Welcome to Nisbets – the UK’s largest supplier of catering equipment with 25 years experience in the industry. For further information regarding our range of cheap catering equipment, please visit our website at http://www.nisbets.co.uk

Making your site stickier to increase traffic

Friday, May 21st, 2010

Last night, family members of former king of pop Michael Jackson held a final vigil by his casket before being laid to rest later today at Hollywood’s “cemetery of the stars”. Tonight, UK time, the funeral will be televised in front of an estimated one billion people worldwide, and will be attended by A celeb stars from the world of music and cinema.

The former king of pop generated huge audiences when he was entertaining in his heyday, and he was able to make millions as people wanted more and more of him. And it’s this recurring business that is the key to success with all types of commerce around the world.

Regarding online business, those that perform well tend to have something about them, something that makes their website sticky making users come back for more. There are steps that can be taken to keep users coming back for more, and marketing on the internet, as well as other tactics, can help with this.

A website needs to be a resource for people to come back time after time. Good examples of this are news sections. If you have a news section which is updated on a regular basis, people will want to know what the latest stories are concerning a particular industry. This will help make your site stickier.

Having a tools section is another great way for people to come back on regular basis. If you are a uk internet marketing or any worldwide firm, people will want to use tools to find out solutions to problems or to make website checks, or will just want to improve overall performance.

Another great way is to include a blog and/or a forum, which brings people together in a community of likeminded people that share ideas and thoughts. When people have a problem, they tend to search on Google and look for forums that cover certain issues. This can be a great way to keep people coming back for more and contribute hugely to increasing traffic to a website.

The overall aim of this would be to reduce bounce rate and increase traffic, and increasing repeat visitors is a great way of achieving this.

How the Business Directory Moves From Paper to Computer Screens

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

A business directory helps buyers to find businesses that sell what they want. The directories used to come printed, often on yellow pages. A buyer went to the relevant category, looked through the listings, and phoned promising suppliers. These days, the directories are more likely to come in an online form. Online business directories have several advantages. Businesses can keep their information up to date so that a prospective buyer won’t find a wrong person at the other end of the phone, for example. Business directories not only serve consumers but also businesses. They can get their businesses listed in the directories and attract the attention of buyers who browse the directories. Much business Promo codes can come in this way, particularly if the directories are online directories.

Advantages of Online Business Directories

Online business directories have several advantages compared to paper-based print directories. These include:

LISTED BUSINESSES:

In addition to providing more information about themselves in the directories, businesses can provide full details at their websites to which directory users typically click through. This is much better than conveying information over the phone when a print directory user phones in

Users are much more likely to check out websites anonymously than phone in. This means that more users are likely to become aware of your offers

A listing in an online directory has the incidental advantage of providing in-pointing links to the websites of listed businesses. Many businesses list their businesses in many directories to gain link popularity that boosts the search engine visibility of their web sites

DIRECTORY USERS:

Users can find what they want much more easily and quickly using search and other facilities. Instead of thumbing through pages of an unwieldy volume, they just click the mouse a few times

Much more information can be accommodated in the online directories. This includes not only information about the listed businesses but also other relevant and helpful information. Direction maps and informative topical notes are examples of such add-ons

Information in online directories are likely to be more up to date, as listed businesses can edit their details

Users can quickly click through to the business website and get more details. They can also contact the businesses if the details meet their expectations, or look promising

Organizing Business Directories

Making it easy to find information in different ways is one of the prime objectives while deciding on how to arrange the content, layout and navigation of the business directory. A search facility with advanced features is a standard feature now. You can typically search by business name, category, location or product. The use of clearly visible tabs to direct visitor to major sections, and links in each section to sub-sections, etc are also standard. The look and feel of a directory can determine whether it would become popular, provided it has an adequate number of listings to become known as a good resource. Many directories seek a niche approach, focusing on a particular business Promo codes category, such as agriculture or plastics.

Conclusion

A business directory helps both buyers and sellers. Online business directories offer several advantages over print directories, which tend to become unwieldy and even obsolete quickly. Online business directories offer speedier finding and more information. For listed businesses, they also provide some link popularity. To be successful, a business directory has to attract both businesses and directory users. They try to do this using different techniques and approaches.

NFL Preseason Betting Angle

Wednesday, May 19th, 2010

The original teams of the American Football League are celebrating a 50th Anniversary this year and for all eight of them it’s quite a big deal. Football bettors following these teams through the preseason are in the spirit, too, thanks to an NFL betting angle that’s hitting over 70-percent and going strong.

When you add up all the Total numbers at the end of a football season, the Over/Under stats usually finish up close to 50-50. For that reason it is very rare to find an auto-play or even a sports betting trend that can be played blindly and produce a consistent profit. It’s always great for sports bettors when they can find an angle, work on the games that fit the profile and narrow down the best bet on the weekly NFL betting board.

There is one select group of teams this year that’s been performing at a consistent rate through the preseason and it’s caught our eye. We;re curious to see if this potential angle is worth watching into the regular season. It’s the original eight AFL teams. It’s the league’s 50th Anniversary this year, and it seems to be getting these teams “up” for their games – in spirit and scoring.

AFL Teams Go “Over”: The original eight teams, as they are now known, are New England, Oakland, Tennessee, Buffalo, the Jets, Kansas City, San Diego and Denver. Each of these teams has played at least three preseason games this year and the 24 matchups have produced 17 overs and 7 unders. That’s better than 70-percent to the high side.

As mentioned earlier, putting a bunch of teams on auto-play is not a sound handicapping method. The law of averages will eventually even things out and once you factor in the juice, the balance at your online sportsbook will look no better than the national budget.

The original eight teams each play one more preseason game before turning their focus towards the regular season. Sportsbook  SPORTSBETTING.com has reported seeing more action come in on the “Over” side on games involving AFL teams the last two weeks of the preseason.

Here are a few things to consider when handicapping Week 4 of the preseason.

- Straight-up records: Every one of these AFL teams has earned a win so far this preseason except for Oakland and Denver. With new coaches in charge on each team, Week 4 is their last opportunity to get off the shnide and build some confidence for their players (and themselves!).

- Location: Home field may have added benefit this week to some of these teams since so many of them have been hosting pre-game and half-time ceremonies to honour the founders of the league. San Diego lost in its Week 1 home opener and then went on the road for two games, falling in the final seconds last week in Atlanta. Versus a 3-0 Niners team this week one win away from a perfect preseason we are seeing motivational factors for both sides to put up points.

Looking at the most recent game a team has played can lead to reactionary betting but in some cases it can pay off. Buffalo is back at home this week after being shutout by the Steelers in Week 3.

Preseason post-shutout victims the past four years have generated a 4-1 record to the “Over” in their next preseason contest. Couple that with the fact that the Bills have been on the road the past two-straight weeks and their Week 4 opponent, the Lions, needs every bit of momentum they can muster heading into the regular campaign and it presents what could be an excellent opportunity for a high scoring contest.

Good luck with your NFL betting the rest of the way in the preseason.

Golf- Tiger Ready to Win FedEx Cup

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

Tiger Woods, golf’s greatest, hasn’t been able to win any of the last four major tournaments he has participated in. The player, who has faced doubts since his knee surgery last year, has won several victories this year, but has apparently lost his touch in the past weeks. Two weeks ago, Woods lost at Hazeltine in the US Open, and as a result, lost the PGA Championship this year.

“The entire year, you work hard, say you won 25 tournaments this year, it doesn’t really matter,” Woods said. “You come here, you don’t play well, you’re not getting into the Tour Championship”.

Tiger – and everyone else – was surprise by Ye Yang, a Korean player who surpassed him at the PGA Championship. Woods began the day two shots ahead but finished one shot behind, taking second place.  When asked how he felt about defeating Woods, Yang replied that he felt somewhat guilty, like a “bad guy,” for ending Woods’ winning streak.

Yang nevertheless celebrated over the week and is now preparing for the FedEx Cup.

This is the first time since 2004 that Woods has lost four tournaments in a row. That isn’t to say that the superstar has gone completely sour; Tiger leads the standings with five victories – none of which are in majors – which translates to 3,431 points and over $7 million in earnings this year.

The last few weeks have also added several points. Woods won the Buick Open in Michigan; he had an incredible winning streak in Akron, as well. He completed three weeks of golf in a row, playing every day; it wasn’t a surprise, then, that he said he was tired and took a few days away from golf.

Now, Woods is preparing for the FedEx Cup at The Barclays, the first time he has attended since 2003. He will be opening at the Westchester Country Club. The FedEx Cup offers an additional 2,500 points for the winner – 2,000 points more than the average major. Woods, as the points leader, can’t afford to miss the tournament.

Nor is the FedEx Cup deficient in financial incentives: $10 million. The prize seemed the primary motivation for another top player, Phil Mickelson, who is on the road towards becoming Player of the Year.

Mickelson, however, isn’t the only one aiming for votes from his fellow players. Woods is also looking at Player of the Year; with five wins under his belt, he has a chance.

“Playing well at the end of the year in the big events, that can swing votes, because usually guys remember what you’ve done later in the year,” Woods said.

However, the final challenge for the FedEx Cup will not be an easy one, not for Wood or any other golfer. The course, Liberty National, is located near Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty, and was chosen for its picturesque scenery. The course itself, however, is essentially millions of tons of dirt, clay, and plastic covering an old oil refinery.

“They are tough,” Woods said of the greens. “They are going to be severe this week.”

Travelling With a Child On a Plane

Friday, May 14th, 2010

A lot of people don’t want to travel on an airplane if they have a newborn. The main reason for this is usually health fears about their baby being on a plane or just because they think it would be a bit too stressful. If your infant is at the right age to travel in a forward facing child car seat you could always take it with you which will help lessen stress. If your child sits in a rear facing car seat you can take this but you will need to confirm with the airline that the seat will fit onto one of the plane passenger seats. They will need their own paid seat though.

The tips below will help you to have a more hassle free journey:

1. Your baby may be allowed to go on a plane journey at just a couple of weeks after birth but it is recommended that you don’t take them on a plane until they are at least 4-6 weeks of age. The air conditioning on the plane can circulate germs which is why you should wait to take your baby on a plane until they are at least 4-6 weeks old.

2. We know how minimal hand luggage has to be on a plane so be sure you don’t forget to pack the most important things in your hand luggage such as nappy cream etc. The rest of your luggage that you will not need during the journey can go in the hold.

3. When you are packing your bags, don’t forget that creams and similar items can not be held in containers bigger than 100ml. Use multiple tubs of up to 100ml if one tub for each lotion is not enough. Remember that all of those containers as well as every other essential for the journey all need to fit into one bag 1 litre in size. Bear in mind that the rule is one bag on board per person. Anything that does not fit in your hand luggage will have to go in with your other luggage in the main luggage bag.

4. Baby milk, food, and formula are exempt from that rule. You need to show security those items seperate from your creams etc (liquid allowance) so it’s best to put them into different bags.

5. Flights can often be delayed so take plenty of snacks and drinks with you.

6. Breast feeding is likely to be the most simple way for you to feed your baby when you are travelling. Breast feeding could help pacify your baby before take-off and landing.

7. Ready made milk formula is the best option if you like to bottle feed your baby. Formula can be fed at room temperature. A disposable bottle for feeding is great for convenience when travelling.

8. Children who are under 2 years of age may be able to sit on your lap on the flight without paying a fare for your child although it is up to the airlines rules. The age limit for a child with this will also vary. This is fine but may not be the most comfortable of options. Some airlines might allow you to bring along a travel booster seat but this will most likely mean paying the full child airfare price (they may even get baggage allowance for themself!). The car seat for your child would most likely be part of the baggage allowance.

The Power of Day Trading with Weekly Profit Goals

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

I insist on the power of weekly profit goals in my Day Trading Coaching Program. I help my students determine a goal for each week that is at once attractive and realistic. I insist that sticking with this goal should be a hard and fast rule. So, no matter how confident, or lucky, they may feel, I tell students that the only way to guarantee long term success is to stop trading once they achieve their goal. They should wait until the next week to start trading again, even if they have a hunch that the market will stay in their favor.

This is a difficult habit to maintain. The reason behind my advice is that consistent gains will always outperform your “hunches” over the long run. But, at first, almost every student finds it to be unintuitive. After all, they think, why should I stop trading when I am ahead? If I keep trading, won’t I make more money?

The answer is that, no, on average you will not make more money. In fact, by not sticking to a target goal each week, you drastically increase your chances of losing money, not simply diminishing your profits.

A concrete example can show how this happens. I recently spoke with a trader who had made 138 trades in four weeks. Unfortunately, he had realized a total loss of $1,365 in that time. I looked over his logs, and I determined that he had one major problem: overtrading. This is how it happened.

His first week started off well. He was up $1,166 after only five trades – not a bad profit for so little activity. However, by the end of the week, he had made an additional 10 trades in which he lost $672. That meant that his total profits for the week were only $494.

The second week began worse than the first, but after a few successes, he was up $1,492. However, he kept trading even after scoring such a large profit, and, by the end of the week, he had given it all back. In fact, when all was said and done, he ended up behind by $248.

The third week was at once the best and the worst. After only two trades, he was holding a profit of $2,170, which of course more than made up for his losses from the week before. But, because he kept trading, by the end of the week, he was down an additional $73.50.

His fourth and, so far, final week, dealt him a serious blow. He was in the red for the entire week, and, although he had a couple of decent hits, he ended with a final loss of $1,537.50.

I think you can see what happened. Except for the fourth week, this trader had profits exceeding $1000 at some point during each week. But by continuing to trade, he always ended up giving that money back to the market. If he had set a target goal of $1,000 for each week, he would have realized a total profit for the month of $1,462.50. Instead, he lost $1,365, a difference of $2,827.50.

The power of weekly target goals is to make sure that you do not lose profits that you make through unnecessary risks. Remember that the best strategy is one that produces consistent profits. Certainly, this trader might have gotten lucky and won big from a single extra trade at the end of the week. But doing that would simply be gambling. Instead, if he had set a goal and stuck to it, he could have all but guaranteed himself a more modest profit each week which, in the end, adds up to quite a reasonable sum.

Once new traders see that the reason behind weekly trading goals is to maintain profits, rather than limiting gains, they allow goals to become an integral part of a system that they put into action each week. And, at the end of the year, those weekly targets add up to a healthy profit.

Are Things as Bad as They Seem?

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

We have seen a number of dark days for stock markets all around the world in the past months. But how frightened should we be? Is the next Great Depression upon us? How can we distinguish a small crisis from a huge one? One way to deal with these questions and to calm our feelings of panic is to look closely at a single bad day. When we do that, the details can show us that the bigger picture may not be as bad as we fear, and, hopefully, quell our feelings of panic.

Let’s look back at September 29. On that day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 7% and the S&P dropped by 8.8%. The Dow’s declines were the largest since the 9/11 attacks, and the S&P had its worst day since Black Monday in 1987. Media headlines included comparisons to the “Crash of 1929” and even “The Great Depression,” but, in spite of all of this, were things really as bad as they seemed?

The first thing to do when we have a horrible day like this is to look at as many of the details as you can. Now, when you do this you should expect some bad news. But the real insight will come when you compare the details of a single bad day to the details of an even worse day that history has proven to be a true market crash.

So let’s put September 29 into perspective.

Before the US stock markets opened on that morning, bad news was already spreading. The financial crisis had reached Europe. Governments were forced to bail out the Belgium bank Fortis, the U.K. nationalized mortgage lender Bradford & Bingley, and Germany’s Hype Real Estate Holding. At home, Wachovia announced that it was in talks with several firms to be sold. Wachovia, in fact, did not fail, but scared customers had pulled their funds after Washington Mutual’s collapse.

On the stock front, the bad news continued. Apple dropped more than 17% after a Morgan Stanley analyst cut her earnings estimate for the company. Since Apple is a central figure in the Nasdaq, the Nasdaq 100 Index fell 10.5%.

After the lunch break, stock traders learned than the House of Representatives rejected the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act, also called “the $700 Billion Bailout Plan.” Since many traders had expected it to pass, the markets reacted heavily, sending the major indices to their worst levels since 2004.

All of that combined made September 29 the worst day in the United States stock market since Black Monday in October of 1987. In fact, in terms of the absolute dollar market value wiped out, more than $1 trillion, Sept. 29, 2008, was the worst day on record.

Now, of course, being the worst day in 30 years is not good news. But how bad was it, really? When we compare September 29 to Black Monday and the Great Depression, we find that we should really keep our feelings of panic in check.

Consider these facts: on October 19th, 1987, “Black Monday,” the Dow Jones Industrial Average Index lost more than 22% in a single day. And the Great Depression following the market crash of 1929 was even worse.

When we compare the details, we start to get some perspective on our situation. In the crash of 1929, the Dow Jones Industrial Average plunged 40% in two months. On September 29, we were “only” down 22% for the whole year. Furthermore, in the 1930’s, more than 9,000 banks, yes, nine thousand, failed, compared with fewer than 20 in recent years. Furthermore, around 40% of all mortgages were delinquent by 1934 compared with 4% today.

No doubt, we are facing tough times. What we need now is leadership and a strong government that makes smart choices. But what we also need is some perspective on our situation. Panic is never productive, and it is especially dangerous when the situation is not yet as bad as it could be. Letting our emotions get the better of us will not help our situation. In fact, it may actually be the very thing that brings us toward the brink of a crash which we have so far been able to avoid. Together we can overcome these challenges, so long as we stay soberly focused on the reality of our situation. A little bit of history can show us, not only some mistakes to avoid, but also that we have much to be thankful for when it comes to mistakes we have not yet made.

A Day Trading Strategy with a 90% Winning Percentage?

Monday, May 10th, 2010

Day traders cannot avoid losses. If anyone tries to sell you a system that has no losses, or even as little as 10% losses, you can be sure that they are unreliable. The fact is that traders engage in a very risky endeavor, and, even with the best plans, the markets will do unpredictable things.

One point to be careful of when researching strategies is the idea of a “winning percentage.” Many day trading programs will tell you that they have a winning percentage of over 90%. This sounds wonderful, of course, but what does it really mean? Does it mean that they profit from 90% of their trades? Does it mean that they always profit with an additional 90% of what they put in? By itself, this statistic tells you nothing.

You can get away with making your winning percentage sound better than it really is. In day trading, your “winning percentage” is a function of the ratio between your stop loss and your profit target. If you increase your stop loss and decrease your profit target, your winning percentage will go up.

Unethical advertisers will make their winning percentage seem better by using the following trick of statistics. An average trader may set a stop loss of $200 and a profit target of $300, which would give them a winning percentage of around 60%. But if you increase the stop loss to $2,000 and decrease the profit target to $100, the winning percentage might climb up to 90%.

This increase in winning percentage does not actually mean that the system is more profitable. While the winning percentage increases, the average profit per trade decreases. Therefore, most of the profits on this example would likely be eaten up by commissions, actually resulting in less real gain than the lower winning percentage.

Most reasonable day traders look for winning percentages between 60% and 80%. But the important thing is that they look at this statistic alongside others. You also want a profit factor of around 1.3-2.5 and a maximum drawdown of 10-20% of the yearly profit. With these other numbers mixed in, you can be sure that the decent sounding winning percentage actually translates into real profits once all the numbers have been crunched and commissions paid.

You should also be aware that different types of systems usually show different winning percentages, although, from this information alone, you will not know how profitable they can be. Most trend-following systems have a winning percentage of 55%-65% while trend-fading systems typically have a winning percentage of 65%-80%. But some trend-following systems can actually be more profitable than trend-fading systems that have higher winning percentages.

As the saying goes, the devil is in the details. Beware of looking at one statistic alone when researching trading strategies. Be sure you understand all aspects of a plan before putting it into practice, not just the most dramatic numbers. It may turn out that the right mix of modest sounding numbers is actually vastly more profitable than the one with the shining, blinking “90% Winning Percentage” stamped on the front.

As we all know, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Statistics can be manipulated in a number of ways, and you should understand exactly what they mean before committing to a program.

Day Trading and Pivot Points

Sunday, May 9th, 2010

I am frequently asked how to use pivot points in day trading. They can certainly be useful tools, but, by themselves, they are not a real trading system or strategy. If you know how to calculate pivot points, however, they can be a helpful source of information.

Pivot points are most commonly used to determine support and resistance levels, which are the prices at which trends will tend to reverse direction. The support level indicates where the price will likely find “support” as it goes down and start to turn back up again. The resistance level is the opposite: the price where a trend tends to stop rising and start dropping.

When it comes to actually using pivot points, most traders refer to the “5-point-system.” This system uses the previous day’s high (H), low (L) and close (C), along with two support levels (S1 and S2) and two resistance levels (R1 and R2). The pivot points are calculated as follows:

R2 = P + (H – L) = P + (R1 – S1)?R1 = (P x 2) – L?P = (H + L + C) / 3?S1 = (P x 2) – H?S2 = P – (H – L) = P – (R1 – S1)

If it has been some time since you’ve used formulas, however, don’t worry. Fortunately, there are many free pivot point calculators available, such as http://www.pivotpointcalculator.com, and you do not have to calculate them yourself. Once you have calculated the pivot points based on the previous day data, you simply plot them on your chart.

I have never heard of any professional trader who uses pivot points exclusively in their day trading. They should not be seen by themselves as a trading system since, in fact, you will find pivot points at many different places on a trend line. In other words, if the price falls below a certain support level, for example, you will be able to calculate another pivot point, or support level, below that one. Pivot points are not absolute numbers, but are relative to the price’s current position. Consequently, most traders use them in conjunction with other indicators, and some even use them as profit targets or stop loss levels.

Deciding whether or not to use pivot points depends entirely on your current trading strategy. Experiment with them first. Plot the pivot points on your chart, and determine whether they give you any additional information. Can you use them as a filter? Could you use them to narrow your stop loss? Would they keep you out of losing trades and therefore increase your trading performance? If the answer to any of these questions is yes, then you should update your trading plan and use them. Otherwise, delete them and keep your charts clean. Your charts should only ever contain information that you actively use, and you should never feel compelled to use an indicator just because others use it. Pivot points are no exception, no matter how widely used they are.

Polo Shirt – Perfect for Men’s Style and Fashion Trends

Friday, May 7th, 2010

A polo shirt, also known as a golf shirt and formerly as a tennis shirt, is a T-shaped shirt with a collar, typically two or three buttons down a slit below the collar, and an optional pocket. A zipper may substitute for buttons, or neither may be present. Polo shirts are usually made of knitted cloth (rather than woven cloth), usually pique cotton or, less commonly, silk, merino wool, or synthetic fibers.

For occasions where the T-shirt is much too informal and it just doesn’t seem to make sense to dress it up with a collared shirt, the polo is a wonderful substitute that brings comfort and durability to the table. Due to the popularity of the business-casual concept with many employers nowadays, the polo shirt has made a return to popularity for both the young and the young at heart.

The polo shirt really reaches it’s maximum effect when worn casually – it is perfect with jeans, casual pants, and even corduroy! As a matter of fact one of the neatest looks for the fall and winter season is to match a nice pair of corduroy pants to an accompanying polo shirt – perhaps a dark, thick guage corduroy in a shade of chocolate laid out with soft ivory or cream coloured polo. This combination looks great with sneakers for the younger set or with loafers for the older gentlemen.

Pink polo shirts recently were thrust back into the spotlight, heralding a new era of extreme popularity amongst college students and other young men – this popularity extends into the time of the writing of this article and now includes many striped polo’s in blues, greens, tans, and browns from trendy mall outlets such as Blue notes or American eagle.

Long-sleeved polo shirts are also an increasingly popular option, especially given the approaching breath and bite of Old Man Winter! The long sleeved polo is usually presented to men in solid colours, although stripes are also coming into fashion in this type of style – this season especially. A long-sleeved polo also makes an excellent gift in that many men do not often think of this possibility in the colder months – many men are in fact not even aware that polo shirts come in a long-sleeved variety!

In many circles, wearing a polo shirt with a necktie and jeans is quickly becoming something of a statement, especially in indie circles or those who have a more eclectic or relaxed attitude toward modern fashion.

Typically this is done with a solid coloured, 100% cotton polo shirt that does not have a button down collar. Popular choices include black polo’s matched with a striking white tie, lighter shades of blue matched with red, white, or pink, and of course the ubiquitous pink polo shirt worn with a black or white necktie.

Polo shirts are inexpensive, durable, and are useful in nearly all seasons, for nearly all occasions. Next to denim, the polo shirt in a variety of colours and stripes are an essential in any man’s wardrobe.
