Never Lag Behind the Competition
December 4th, 2008 by kayemarksToo often success leads to complacency, and then to reduced sales.
A company who leads the market is going to be more likely to become less competitive, simply assuming that customers will continue to favor them. Why vary up your commercial printing or go for unique types of advertising if you’re already at the top?
You’re firmly entrenched in the marketplace and people already have come to know you as an expert in your field, so what do you really have to worry about?
Even the largest companies can have their customer base slowly chipped away if they aren’t staying competitive and start to lag behind their competition when it comes to marketing and innovations. Those with the most customers have the most people to lose, and so need to have a greater burden on them to keep up, rather than less of one.
These companies are also the ones most likely to start dragging their feet and keeping up with the same type of marketing year after year, because they’re used to it. For a new company they don’t have their feet quite as much yet, and so they’re willing to try something new in order to make their name known.
This leads to more variety with their advertising and their commercial printing. They aren’t used to doing one specific type of marketing or another. They have a freedom the large companies lack. These are often the companies who help reshape the marketing landscape and if the larger companies fail to see the changes coming, they’ll find themselves looking old and outdated.
This is the beginning of a slow decline in business if you aren’t able to head it off before it starts. The first and largest step towards that goal is keeping your ear to the ground at all times.
Never settle into the idea that you have it made and you don’t have anything to worry about anymore. I’m not saying you should spend any of your time panicking, but keep your customers in mind. Don’t you get bored seeing the same kinds of things over and over again? This isn’t any different for the people giving you business.
When the internet first became huge many companies avoided starting up an online version of their store, or marketing on it at all. These were the first companies to see their profits sliding downwards as the popularity of the internet continued to grow.
People are constantly finding new ways to market their business, some of which might be perfect for your company, but first you have to take advantage of them. If you aren’t focusing on new types of marketing than you won’t be able to benefit from them at all.
Be sure you’re always keeping your eye on any changes in the world of marketing. One slip can start you on a downward slide if you don’t keep on top of things.
