When I was growing up my sisters and I played games all the time. Now this was before the home video games came out and the Internet was not available to play games online. 1. 500 Rummy – In this game each player is given 7 cards and the rest of the cards are placed upside down on the table with the exception of one card. The first player then drew either from the upside down deck of cards or from the one card. He then discarded one card out of his hand. The point of the game was to get either 3 or 4 of a kind or a run of 3 or more in the same suite and you would lay these down on the table. The first person out of cards won the hand and all the points were tallied from the cards on the table. The first person to reach 500 points wins.

2. War – Here is a game that my children still play from time to time. It is played with two players and the deck is split evenly between them. Each player then flips over the top card in their deck and lays it on the table. The person with the highest card takes the two of them. If it is a tie then 3 cards are placed face down and a fourth card is placed face up. The higher of the face up card takes them all. The game is won when all the cards are in one person’s hand.

So the next time you have nothing to do, why not grab a deck of cards and play a hand with someone you love. It’s a great way to pass a grey afternoon or a slow evening at home.

3. Hide and Seek – Here is a game that really doesn’t need much of an explanation. One person hid their eyes and counted to a pre-determined number while the other players hid. Then the person that had their eyes closed went to find the hidden players. The first player that was touched before he reached the home base was now it. This could be played indoors or out.

This game has been played in marathon sessions where the company actually had to fly in additional monopoly money.

2. Parcheesi – Here is a great old board game that is a lot of fun to play and doesn’t require much brain power (sorry if that offends anyone). You roll the dice and move your piece around the board. The first person to reach the goal wins, but you need to reach that goal with an exact roll of the die.

There are many other board games that can be played, but these are a few that will get you started. If you love these games then you are in good company. If you’ve never tried them then I suggest getting them and try having a family night where you play them together. You might find that you actually enjoy each others company.

Keeping your child safe is more than a job; it is a responsibility that you took on when you became a parent. The day that we found out we were pregnant was one of the happiest days of my life. I wanted to record everything that happened during my pregnancy and decided that the best way to do this was to put together a pregnancy scrapbook and journal on a regular basis. There are many ways to do a pregnancy scrapbook, but I wanted to share what I did.

The first few pages of my pregnancy scrapbook, I talked about how we found out we were pregnant and how we felt. I also have included the “we’re pregnant” pictures taken by a cousin. These pictures are very special as they were taken the day after we found out, but nobody knows yet so they thought we just wanted some pictures taken together.

The next few pages are all about how we told friends and family. I included pictures in there including some priceless pictures of my Mother-in-law’s reaction that could not be recaptured in a million years. We told different people in different ways and it is fun to read about all of this just 3 years after we told them.

I devoted a whole section in the pregnancy scrapbook for baby items and things we bought. This includes pictures of the bedding, crib and paint samples from the room. I also included baby registry information as well as some cute gift cards we received from various people.

About one month into my pregnancy scrapbook, it became a twin scrapbook as we discovered we were having twins. I found some awesome twin scrapbook items online that I have never seen in the stores. Twin scrapbook paper and embellishments are not always easy to come by.

Every pregnancy scrapbook needs information and pictures from baby showers. Since the twins came early, my baby showers all occurred after they got here, so they are at some of the showers too, which is great because I have some awesome photos of them with friends and relatives oohing and ahhing over them.

The largest part of my pregnancy scrapbook centers around the pregnancy and growth of the babies. Every week I would journal about not only changes in me, but what they were doing according to pregnancy books I purchased. I also wrote information about their current size and included a sticker or diecut that was approximately that same size for reference. Every month I took a picture of my growing belly to include in the book too.

These are just a few suggestions for putting together a pregnancy scrapbook. There are plenty of other ideas online. Have fun personalizing your scrapbook. It is a treasured album full of memories for you and for you to share with your children in the future.

Whether you have just recently celebrated your wedding or you have just found the time to be able to scrapbook, creating a wedding scrapbook is a great way to preserve the memories of the day. However, taking on the task of scrapbooking your wedding can seem overwhelming. There are some things that you can do to take the stress and pressure that you might feel out of creating the scrapbook.

One thing you can do is to keep it simple. We all love scrapbook pages that are full of embellishments such as stickers or die cuts. However, if you have hundreds of photos to work with, it might be better to let the pictures do the talking. Instead of concentrating on embellishments, journal about the day on your pages. Journaling helps you to capture how you felt, special moments and amusing or unplanned events that happened during the day.

You can also break up the wedding and events surrounding the wedding into different albums. This helps you concentrate on one thing at a time. For instance, I have a shower and rehearsal album, a wedding album, a reception album and a honeymoon album. We had about 15 disposable cameras sitting around at the reception, so that is why I chose to do it separately from the rest. I also have a miscellaneous album that is filled with pictures that other people gave me after I had already completed my albums. This way I don’t have to worry about adding pages to the other albums.

If you must give a wedding scrapbook to your parents, keep those simple as well. They don’t need all the pictures. Just choose those that you think are the best or that would mean something special to them. This will probably mean using different pictures for each set of parents.

Creating a wedding scrapbook for friends and family members who are getting married is also an excellent idea. I recently did this for a friend. In addition to pictures and memos, I had everyone put their wishes for the bride and groom on acid free paper to add to the back of the scrapbook.

However you choose to create your wedding scrapbook, it should be fun, not stressful. You should enjoy reliving the day as you scrapbook instead of feeling overwhelmed at the pile of pictures laid out before you. You have already created the memories, the scrapbook is just a way for you to share them with others and to enjoy seeing them for years to come.

We have all done it. We have created the perfect scrapbooking page and we sit back and look at it with pride in our eyes. You know the feeling of pride one can only feel when they have poured over an hour on one page and we KNOW we did a great job. We read our journaling and then the date jumps out at us we used the year 2004 and this is 2006. Or, we have moved our hand across the page after writing the last word and created a smudge. Do not panic and do not tear up the page, fixing scrapbooking mistakes is an easy thing to do!

What I have found is that there is no scrapbooking mistake too big or too small that it can’t be fixed without anyone ever knowing it happened. Misspellings and incorrect dates tend to be my number one mistake. If it is simply a date or heading that is incorrect, I take a piece of solid scrapbooking paper, cut it in a unique fashion and glue it over the mistake. Voila, you have a blank slate to write on. If it is in the middle of writing, I take that opportunity to add stickers or other embellishments in the middle of my journaling and write around it. If I smudge writing or stamping, I typically cover it with an embellishment or I smudge other areas of writing and try to give the page an overall shabby look.

It can also be frustrating when a picture, die cut or scrapbooking paper tears. Again, embellishments can do a great job. If you cover the tear in scrapbooking paper or the scrapbooking page with a sticker, nobody will ever know that the tear was there. Please note that if you add an embellishment one place you will more than likely have to add scrapbooking embellishments elsewhere or it may look out of place.

It is through mistakes that I have been able to use my creativity to come up with an even better page than before. It forces me to think outside the box. So, don’t think of them as scrapbooking mistakes, think of them as scrapbooking challenges. You also need to know that, no matter what challenge you are faced with, there is a solution on the internet if you can’t think of one yourself.

Heating your home or apartment is not just something you want to do during the winter months, it’s something you need to do to survive. With energy prices expected to be up to 50% higher this winter many folks are actualy scared, because they find it hard to pay the heating bills every winter, and this year may be the worse in history.

I live in a small apartment in the Northeast U.S. in the state of Pennsylvania. In the winter it gets very cold here. It’s normal for us to have very cold temperatures from November – March, and during the months of January and February, we often have weeks where the daytime temperature never gets above 15 degrees.

I heat my apartment here with baseboard electric, and it’s very expensive. I usualy only heat two rooms, sometimes three. My monthly heating bill used to average $200 during the winter months sometimes closer to $250. My apartment is not
insulated that good or built correctly, because the floor gets very cold during the winter and feels like a refrigerator during the cold months, requiring me to wear slippers most of the time.

Making a few alterations I managed to lower my winter heat bill to an average of $125 per month, which is a nice savings for me. If you follow the tips I am giving you here, you should also be able to lower your winter heat bill nicely, and save yourself some money.

Heat Bill Saving Tips – Winter Heating Tips For Saving Money:

1. Lower The Thermostat
Lowering the thermostat is the easiest and one of the most cost effective ways of saving money. Try dropping it a few degrees, maintaining safe levels for good health.

2. Don’t Block The Heat
Don’t block the floor registers, baseboards or radiators with rugs, furniture or other items. The warm air must be able to circulate around them for maximum efficiency.

3. Seal The Gaps And Cracks
Walk around the outside of your home or apartment, and slowly examine the windows,doors, siding, water faucets and any other through-the-wall openings.Any such cracks or openings should be caulked and sealed. Cold air can easily get in, and warm air escape.

4. Clean The Filters
If your furnace or heating system uses filters, make sure you clean or check them monthly. A dirty or clogged filter makes the heating system work harder and produce less heat, wasting your money.

5. Reverse The Fans
If you have ceiling fans that have a reverse setting, turn them on low and on reverse when your using a lot of heat. The warm air rises and often gets trapped near the ceiling area, the reverse air flow from the fan will help circulate the warm air around your whole room.

If your furnace seems to heat the whole basement, open the door going down to it, The heat accumilating near it will rise and can help heat the living areas.

7. Heat From Cooking
If you do any winter baking in the oven, always leave the oven door openwhile it cools down, to allow the heat to help keep you warm while making sure any children and pets are not in harms way.

8. Close The Dampers
Warm air rises fast, so make sure when your chimney fire is completely out, that you close the damper, or else your letting warm air escape faster than a prisoner on the run.

9. Cut The Branches
Trees protect us from wind and help shade us from the hot summer sun, but they can also cost us money. Inspect your trees in the cool months and cut off any branches that block the winter sun from getting into your windows. That winter sun is at a lower angle then it is in the summer, but it still helps warm a room when it shines in.

10. Dress Unlike The Rest
If you sit around the house in shorts and a loose fitting shirt or blouse in the winter you will probably feel cold, and have the desire to turn up the thermostat. Dress for the season, and try wearing a sweater. Dressing warmer will make you feel warmer, so you can keep the thermostat turned down lower and save money.

Choosing the Right Pepper Spray

There are so many types of pepper spray on the market today that it has become confusing for you to decide which one to get. There are three basic chemical compounds that compose these defensive sprays.

CS (Orthochlorobenzalmalonitrile)

CN (alphachloroacetaphenone)

OC (Oleoresin Capsicum)

The first two, CS and CN, irritate the membrane tissues and cause stinging and tearing. They can take from 5 to 30 seconds before they are effective and may not work if someone is drunk, on drugs, psychotic, or can’t feel pain. The time delay and the fact that they may or may not be effective, is enough to turn people away from the self defense sprays. However, the remaining compound, OC, does not have these limitations.

OC, or Pepper Spray, is an inflammatory agent; not an irritant. When someone is sprayed with OC pepper spray, the person’s eyes slam shut. Even if someone does manage to get their eyes open, they won’t be able to see because OC dilates the capillaries and causes temporary blindness. Additionally, instant inflammation of the breathing tissues restricts all but life suport breathing. They double over coughing uncontrollably.

But I hear about people who aren’t affected by pepper spray?

What you have heard about are the man made chemical compounds commonly referred to as CS or CN. These are your tear gases. For example, military personnel are subjected to similar chemicals in the course of their training to simulate a chemical attack in a war time situation. After repeated exposure, a resistance is built up so the “gas chamber,” as it is called, does not affect them as much. And it’s true that some people are just not as affected as others are. Other law enforcement personnel, martial artists, and yes, even determined criminals can fight through the effects of CS or CN chemical sprays.

Chemical Compounds that make up defensive sprays:

OC (Oleoresin Capsicum)

Pepper Spray, on the other hand, has the effect of putting a brick wall in between the assailant and the sprayer. When someone gets a full blast of OC pepper spray, they stop what they are doing. They stop what they are thinking. Even people previously mentioned that could withstand the effects of tear gas, are very personally affected by OC pepper spray. This includes people that are drunk, on drugs, or psychotic.

Ok, so how do I decide which one to buy?

Once it became known that OC is superior to CN and CS, many brands became available with different concentrations, formulations, sizes, and spray patterns. Choosing the right spray is a critical decision if the spray ever has to be used in a self defense situation.

Defensive Sprays Considerations

Size and capacity: Sizes can range from a 1/2 ounce personal pepper spray up to 9 ounces for the bear pepper spray. Keychain sized defensive sprays or sizes easily carried on a belt or in a purse are ideal for most situations. Even the smallest units have enough in them to handle multiple attackers if done properly. The two main factors you want to look for are the range and the number of shots. A 6-8 foot range is plenty since that is where most personal assaults will take place. Most defensive sprays are also classified by number of one second bursts. A good 1-2 second burst will disable almost any assailant.

Spray Pattern: There are two basic types of defensive spray patterns, stream and mist. Stream patterns give good range but require aiming directly at the face. Cone mists have shorter range but you don’t have to aim as well. If there is a breeze, a stream is more controllable. Mists can be blown off target or even back to the sprayer. OC pepper spray works best when it hits the eyes and is inhaled. The mist is inhaled instantly while the stream might take longer for the person to breathe in the pepper spray. In all cases, it is critical to hit the attacker in the face!

What else should I know about purchasing defensive pepper sprays?

Aside from size and capacity, and spray pattern of pepper spray, the formulation can also be a consideration.

Formulation: OC comes in concentrations of 5%, 10%, 15%, or even higher. Bear pepper spray is rated at 20%. Because of different marketing that has evolved around these defensive sprays, the percentage is not always a good indicator of effectiveness. Coin Values are Tempered by Grade or Classification The final major factor in determining coin values is the grade or classification of the coin. The more wear and tear that a coin has undergone, the less value it is going to have. This is why uncirculated coins are usually more valuable than coins that have been passed from hand to hand. Uncirculated coins have always been kept in the very best of conditions, making their value much higher. A coin in flawless condition may be worth hundreds of times more than a low-grade version of the exact same coin.

Now that you understand the basic factors that influence coin values, you have a better grasp of which coins may have real value and which will be worthless. In order to get a ballpark estimate of the value of any coins you might have, you will first need to determine its grade or classification. Welding has been around for centuries, though not in the forms most commonly used today. One of the first welding processes ever used was known as forge welding. Forge welding attempts to join two metals through a process of heating, and then pounding and striking. It’s what blacksmiths did. Understanding welding basics can come in handy at work, but it will just as often come in handy around the house, in the workshop or on the farm. 5. Damage to your eyes, and
6. Burns

However, by wearing protective clothing and specialized welding helmets and other gear, you can greatly reduce the inherent risks of welding. Here are a few other tips to help keep you safe while arc welding:

Make sure to work on a dry floor. Wear thick rubber shoes and dry leather welding gloves.
Be sure to use insulated electrode holders.
Check to make sure that your equipment is all properly grounded.
Keep your work area properly ventilated to avoid inhaling any potentially toxic fumes.
Be on the look out for flying bits of melted metal.
Most importantly, be aware of any other people who are around you. If they aren’t wearing the proper gear, then keep them away from your project.

This will get you started welding safely – one of the most important things when learning a new craft.

You may have noticed that life insurance is coming back into fashion. It’s true that it may not be the financial term on everybody’s lips, but sales of life insurance have been going up, according to the Association of British Insurers. Whilst we may not be saving the volume of funds that the financial institutes would like, we are at least flirting with the idea of becoming a little more protective with our finances.

If you have yet to consider taking out any life insurance, don’t worry -there’s plenty of information out there including consumer organisations such as which? and moneynet. Start with some simple, easy questions such as:

* Would my dependents need a lump sum, such as to pay off the mortgage?
* Will they need a replacement income?
* Should my partner and I both take out life insurance?

You need to ensure whatever life insurance cover you take out accommodates funeral expenses, an emergency fund to encompass household expenses in the short term, repayment of the mortgage, repayment of any other loans, inheritance tax, bequests in your will to people – in addition to your dependents, any other possible lump-sum expenses.

Life insurance broadly falls into two categories: term life insurance (protection only) and investment type. Term insurance is the cheapest type of life insurance and provides a pay-out if the person / policy holder dies within a selected period of years. If you survive beyond the given period of years, then no pay-out is given.

Investment insurance advises that you should choose a whole-of-life option which is a form of investment type policy. Whole-of-life insurance provides cover for as long as the policy holder lives. The policy must eventually pay out and therefore builds up an investment value which can be cashed in by surrendering the policy. However, it often takes many years for a surrender value to build up and in general, whole-of-life policies are expensive if your main requirement is protection, the same is true endowment policies. Endowment policies are investment insurance products which pay out upon the death of the policy holder and also if they survive.

If you’re considering term life insurance, bear in mind there are multiple variations encompassing increasing term insurance, increasable term insurance, decreasing term insurance, renewable term insurance, convertible term insurance, family income benefit insurance and pension linked term insurance.

Increasing term insurance
Increasing term insurance is just like basic term insurance, except that, as the name suggests, the level of cover increases – typically alongside the premiums. This policy is suitable for long-term insurance as increasing prices reduce the value of a fixed level of cover over policy period.

Increasable term insurance
Increasable term insurance provides the option of increasing the level of cover either at specific intervals (such as anniversary of policy start date) or specific events (such as marriage or birth of a child). Premiums increase for additional cover, but they are based on your health at the start of the policy, even if it has since deteriorated.

Decreasing term insurance
Decreasing term insurance reduces cover year on year, with the policy holder usually requiring the cover for loan repayments such as a mortgage or to cover a potential inheritance tax bill.

Renewable term insurance
Renewable term insurance gives the policy holder the option to extend the insurance term when it comes to an end; the premium paid is the same at the start of the term, in spite of any deterioration in the policy holder’s health.

This may be beneficial to parents whose children stay in full-time education longer than originally intended. Alternatively if someone cannot afford the cover for the period they want, they could take out cover for a short period and extend it later with slightly high premiums.

It might be a financial jungle out there, but it’s not impossible to navigate your way through to financial security.

Crystal Radio Sets are Alive and Kicking

I was brought up under strict conditions. Bedtime was at a certain rigid time every night. Lights out meant no reading; it meant sleep. It certainly did not include listening to radio broadcasts.

But as a child of thirteen, I discovered the delights of the crystal set. It was a frustrating affair. The workings of it have remained a complete mystery. How, I wondered then, could a lump of gray mineral possibly capture radio waves and do so without a battery?

Now, several decades later, the answers are easy to find on the Internet – here I quickly discover that crystal sets, and the parts to make them, are readily available today – even though they look vastly different from the crude thing I had. In comparison, today’s look.well.positively modern.

To my amazement, according to Google there are 81,200 pages that contain the phrase “crystal set”.

There is even The Xtal Set Society http://www.midnightscience.com which says it is “dedicated to once again building and experimenting with radio electronics.” It advertises books, parts and kits. One kit is called the Quaker Oat Box Radio Pack. It contains one roll of 24-gauge hook-up wire (100 feet), one germanium diode, one 47,000-ohm resistor, one alligator clip, and one crystal earplug. Sounds just about as basic as my old set.but I don’t remember the other instructions that come with this kit: “You will need to provide your own antenna wire and oatmeal box.”

The advertised price is $8.95. Do some reverse inflation calculations and you will know better than I now remember roughly how much I paid for my set back in 1947. Any money I had in those days was `earned’ by not spending my lunch money at school, so I know the set I had was dirt-cheap.

Radio Shack sells starter kits too. Describing a project for “beginning experimenters” at http://www.thebest.net/wuggy/rs99fun.htm one reviewer said “the Radio Shack crystal radio kit Cat. No. 28-178 is a pretty fair starter set. It does work, and some simple modifications will enhance its performance.” When he wrote four years ago, the price was $9.99. After some modifications, which he describes, he was able to listen to New York, Netherlands Antilles, Cuba, Charlotte NC, Chicago, “and a few others”. What a difference a coil of wire for an antenna makes!

There was no simple method for tuning my set. I remember there was a contact of some sort, and that by moving this minuscule distances across the crystal you could, with much patience, tune in a radio station. Usually, it was faint. Fiddle with the contact and the signal would be lost and found again many times before a signal strong enough to enjoy came in. And it would often disappear in the middle of a show for no obvious reason.

“He aims and fires, but he misses.and that was his last bullet. The killer reaches for him, the axe raised in his other hand, and .” fizzle, crackle, silence. Mutter, mutter (the latter being me)!

Now I understand I needed to pay much more attention to installing a good antenna – a 50-foot piece of wire outside the house and as high as possible – and that I needed a good ground. But as a 13-year-old, I simply wanted to listen under the bed covers in the dark to my favorite radio thriller.

It almost didn’t matter what the program was. Each had the compelling signature music, sometimes just single musical notes, the voices with their sense of urgency, the suspense, the climax, the scripting formula. I also remember the screech of car tires in chase scenes. It was pretty gripping stuff for a small boy.

Remember how shoes were always soled in hard leather? Rubber didn’t make enough noise. Doors always squeaked; silent ones would not have been much use on radio. And do I remember correctly that detectives were always men and that secretaries were always women?

Today, when I recall those days long ago, I remember the crystal radio set with its finicky connection that would fade to almost nothing at the crucial point in the story. Then it would come back just as the announcer was saying something like: “So long! See you next week.”
