Chess — The Basics

Saturday, July 29th, 2006

Chess is a fascinating board game that was invented thousands of years ago. Throughout its long history, it has earned acclaim and is considered to be the ‘king’ of board games. Several famous personalities were known for their chess skills. Napoleon, Nikola Tesla, Charlie Chaplin and Einstein were among them.

Chess can provide many hours of pleasure, not to mention intellectual exercise, since the game is known to improve analytical thinking, creativity and judgment.

In the past chess was mainly played by courtiers. Now everyone may enjoy this privilege. Chess attracts people of all ages from all over the world. Chess is intriguing, for it allows players to pit their wits, experience and inspiration against a competitor.

All you need to start playing chess is a chessboard and chess pieces — or if you wish to play online, you need nothing more than your computer. The chessboard is an 8″x 8″ board with alternating black and white squares; nearly everyone is sure to have seen one.

There are 32 chess pieces in total; 16 white pieces and their 16 black counterparts. One player owns the white pieces (we call this player WHITE) and the opponent (the BLACK) gets the black ones. The 16 pieces are: the King, the Queen, two Rooks, two Bishops, two Knights and eight Pawns.

When the game starts these pieces are placed in their initial, predefined positions. The arrangement is as follows: each player has his own pieces positioned along the two rows of the board (called ranks) that are closest to him. All 8 pawns are placed on the innermost rank of the 2. The rest of the pieces are placed closest to the player in the following order: Rook, Knight, Bishop, Queen, King, Bishop, Knight, and Rook. This order is from left to right for WHITE and from right to left for BLACK, so that the same pieces are opposed on each column (called a file) of the board.

To facilitate descriptions of chess positions the ‘algebraic chess notation’ was invented. It is easy to learn and helps to identify squares and pieces on the board. It works like this: viewing from WHITE’s perspective, the leftmost file is designated ‘a’, the next one ‘b’ and so on until we reach the rightmost file, which is file ‘h’. The rank that is closest to WHITE is ‘rank 1′, or the first rank. Next comes ‘rank 2′ (the second rank) and so on until we get to the eighth rank, which is the rank closest to BLACK.

Now that we have appropriately designated the ranks and files we may identify a square by looking up the rank and the file to which it belongs. Thus, still viewing from WHITE’s side, the bottom left square is the square ‘a1′, since it belongs to file ‘a’ and to the first rank. Its adjacent squares are ‘b1′ on the right and ‘a2′ just above it.

Your goal is to trap the enemy King — it’s that simple. But that is a story for another day.

6 Simple Steps to Becoming A HOT Guitar Player!

Saturday, July 29th, 2006

Learning how to play guitar well is not easy. There are so many methods and so many conflicting opinions, it makes it difficult to know what to do.

But the simple fact is, if you want to be the best you can, as soon as you can, then all you need to do is - copy what the pro’s do…

Master the Basics!

Mastering the basics means being able to play in all keys. Being able to transpose any song to any other key - on the spot preferably.

Did you know that 95% of guitarists DON’T master the basics. Oh yes, they mean to get around to it, but they hardly ever do.

Why is that? Well, it’s because they think it’s boring, complicated and too much hard work. And most of all - no fun! And mostly they were right. Well, it needn’t be that way. Mastering the basics can be a lot of fun if you go about it in a methodical set-by-step way.

What does mastering the basics entail?

There are 6 basic steps you need to follow:

1. Learn the names of all notes on all strings, one string at a time.

2. Learn how to construct a C Major scale.

Basic must-know guitar theory. Easy stuff.

3. Learn how the chords of the major scale are made and what they are… their names etc. C Dm Em F G Am Bdim.

Basic chord construction knowledge.

4. Learn the triad patterns for the C major scale all over the fret board.

Triads are simple 3-note chords. Easy and fun to learn and play.

5. Learn to play those triads with common chord progressions.

Learn to play and apply the triads to the most common chord progressions that fit thousands and thousands of songs.

6. Learn to do step 5 in all keys.

Once you can do steps one to five in the key of C, it’s real easy to learn it for the other 11 major keys.

Hint: It’s much easier than you think. All the patterns are exactly the same as what you learn for C major. You don’t have to learn any new patterns. Cookie cutter stuff.

It really is not hard at all. All you need is a methodical step-by-step method that makes sense and is easy and fun to use.

Sibling Rivalry: The Magic Secret That Stops It Instantly

Saturday, July 29th, 2006

It’s a familiar scene: Kids screaming at each other,
complaining that, “He got a bigger piece of pie,” or “She
got to stay up an hour later last night.”

When sibling rivalry rears its ugly head, what do you do?

Try to reason with the kids? Scream, threaten or punish
them? Ignore it and run for cover?

None of these methods is very effective for very long.

But I’ve discovered a tactic that works every time. It
really is guaranteed to end sibling battles, almost
instantaneously. The only downside is it requires a bit of
patience on your part.

The trick is understanding that it doesn’t matter what the
kids are arguing about, the real battle is for your
attention.

Really. They could be screaming at the top of their lungs
over who gets to play with a certain toy. They could be
red-faced and foaming at the mouth over who got to sit in
the favorite chair. It doesn’t matter what they’re arguing
about. What they’re really saying is, “Mom, I want more of
your attention. I want to know you love me.”

Understand this, and you’re 80 percent of the way to
resolving all sibling battles.

So here’s how to resolve the battles: Try to catch them
before the argument escalates to the point where one or both
kids need to be reprimanded.

If you can’t do that, wait for the next time. There always
is a next time, isn’t there?

Next, make it clear that you aren’t taking sides.

Now try to discern which child is feeling the need for
attention most. It will typically be the child who started
it, though that’s not always easy to figure out.

Turn to that child first and say, “Look, I can see you’re
upset. I’m wondering if maybe you need some more attention
from me. Can I give you a hug?” (Or rub your back or throw
the football around or whatever you do when you give your
kids attention.)

When that child is calm, repeat with the other child(ren).

Your goal is to let your kids know that:

1) You understand they need your attention; and

2) You accept them; and

3) You aren’t going to judge them for needing or wanting
your love.

Depending on how old the kids are and how long the rivalry
has lasted, you may hear a little sarcasm. But I promise
you, there’s a soft vulnerability underneath those barbs. If
you can ignore the sarcasm and keep offering more attention,
you’ll be amazed how quickly the arguments disappear.

Giving them attention doesn’t mean you have to be at their
beck and call for the rest of the day. It may mean you give
them hugs and kisses. It may mean sitting and talking with
them. Or it may just mean sitting quietly and playing a
game of their choice for a few minutes.

When They Both Want Your Attention at Once

It helps if you warn them that you’ll have to take turns
giving each child individual attention. I handle this in a
really straightforward way.

I just say something like, “Listen, I can see you both want
my attention now. And honestly, you both deserve it.
(That’s the best line I’ve come up with yet!)

I really want to give both of you the attention you deserve,
but I’m only human. So how about if I sit over here and
talk with you first, then I’ll play a game with you…and so
on.”

This also works really well when there’s a new baby in the
house. Obviously, if you’re in the middle of feeding,
changing or bathing the baby, you can’t give the older
one(s) the attention they want.

So just say as sympathetically as possible, “You know what?
I bet you want a hug right now, don’t you?” Or, “Could you
use some mommy time?” Or, “Does it seem to you like the
baby is getting all my attention?”

Then say, “You deserve my attention, too. And I want to
give it to you. Right now, I can’t because I have to feed
the baby. But as soon as I’m finished I’m going to…[give
you a great big hug, play Candy Land with you, etc.]

Is This Really Guaranteed to Work?

Yes, but, of course, you have to put it into practice.

I am the first to admit that when I’m tired, hungry, cranky
or PMSish (or worse, postpartumish!), I just can’t bother
with this trick. I mean, geez, even Barney would get PMS if
he were a woman (and not a make-believe character)! So
don’t expect the battles to stop instantaneously and never
arise again.

Plus, when the kids are tired and cranky, it doesn’t matter
how much attention you give them, they’re not going to
respond to anything but food and sleep. Understand that,
too.

The reason this trick is guaranteed to work because it’s
based on understanding that the root of all sibling rivalry
is a battle for your attention. Even if you do nothing
other than understand that, and accept that all kids need
attention (probably more than you have to give), you’re 80%
of the way there.

Nitro Powered RC Cars - Tips for Choosing Your First Gas RC Car

Saturday, July 29th, 2006

RC (radio controlled) cars, especially the nitro or gas powered RC cars, are becoming increasingly popular. With speeds up to 70 mph, realistic looks, and racing clubs in virtually every large city, it’s easy to see why.

If you want to join this exciting hobby, there’re a few things you should consider before you buy your first nitro-powered RC car. The basic considerations are: size, type, 2 or 4-stroke motor, maintenance, 2 or 4 wheel drive, and ready-to-run (rtr) or kit cars.

Sizes
The two most popular sizes to choose from are 1/8 and 1/10 scale. 1/10th scale is the industry standard for on-road racers, while 1/8th is more popular for off-road trucks and buggies. The larger 1/8th scale on road car comes standard with a 2 or 3 speed automatic transmission.

Types
The touring and racing cars are are the popular choice for on-road use. For best performance, they should be run on a smooth surface.

Trucks and buggies are the choice if off-road action is what you want. Though not as fast as the touring and racing styles, they are still very impressive and extremely rugged as well. And since a smooth surface is not required, they also have the advantage of being able to run just about anywhere.

Motors
Nitro powered RC motors come available in the popular 2-stroke or the less conventional 4- stroke versions. The primary difference is that the 2-stroke motor, much like a weed eater or chain saw, requires a fuel oil mixture. The 4-stroke motor has an oil reservoir and can run on straight fuel. The 2 stroke engine has the advantage of producing higher rpm’s (revs up faster) and is more suitable for racing. The 4 stroke engine has more power and torque and is better for offroad use.

The most popular 2-stroke motor is the 23cc (cubic centimeter) displacement engine. It’s popularity is due to the amazing 2.5 HP of output it produces. The resulting high speeds and acceleration are what RC racers love.

Additionally, motors come with or without a pull start. The ones without a pull start are cheaper, but you’ll also need a starter box.

Maintenance for Nitro Powered RC Cars
Maintenance is a definite requirement of running a nitro powered vehicle. Most hobbyist love tweaking and tuning their vehicles. In addition, you’ll need to maintain certain parts such as:

Clutch
Differential
Air Filter
Header and
Pull start cord

2 or 4 Wheel Drive
If you’re new to the hobby, you’ll find a 2wd car less expensive and easier to work on. The 4wd car has the advantage of better traction and handling in turns which makes it a better choice when you’re ready to race.

Kits or Ready to Run (RTR) Rc Cars
Nitro powered rc cars come in kits or ready-to-run right from the box. The primary difference is the whether you want to save time with a RTR car or save money with a kit. However, because of the assembly process, kits better prepare you for required maintenance.

If you choose to build an rc car, don’t expect to finish in one sitting. To avoid mistakes, familiarize yourself with the instructions first and get your work area prepared. Some of the things you’ll need are:

Small No. 1 and 2 Phillips and flathead screwdrivers
Soap - as a dry lubricant for tight parts
Extra fuel line - to hold screws while positioning
Needle nose and regular slip joint pliers
Flush cutter
Hobby knife with no. 11 blades

When you assemble the car, make sure to work in a well-lit, uncluttered area. You should keep the parts and tools separated using tin boxes, trays, or even an old fishing tackle box.

These are a few of the basics you’ll need to know before you buy your first nitro rc car or truck. You should expect to pay around $400 for a complete beginner setup. The price will vary a little depending on whether you choose a kit or RTR and how many tools you need.

Whether you race or just practice by yourself, get ready for a lot of fun!

Guide to choosing educational toys for children

Choosing educational toys and games for children

In the last few years, parents started getting more and more interested in choosing all sorts of educational toys for their children. Because a parent wishes the best for his child, a toy that is labeled as educational is very likely to be bought easier than others. But what is an child educational toy?

Well, there is no definition of the term “educational toy” from what I know. However, what I do know is that an educational toy is a toy that helps a child learn something good, something that will help in the future. Play is the most important activity of any child.

Learning thru play is a reality; it can and it is done unknowingly every time your child plays. The parent must however control the play so that it remains on an educational course. There are also toys that aren’t exactly educational for children . Toy guns and other such toys that somehow tend to violence and other bad behaviors are not recommended. You must avoid such toys. Although these toys may be a good source of fun for youngsters, on the long term they will only do harm.

How do child educational toys and games work?

A I said above, play is a child`s main activity. During the play, a child learns many new things. Toys and games must be integrated into the play to make their job. This is not hard, because play consists of several games that require using toys.

Any toy can be educational, as long as it does not develop a bad behavior, and it is used in your child’s play. A toy must be used in order to be educational for a child.

To be clearer about how child educational toys and games work, I will take one example: Hide and seek.

Let’s take a look at Hide and Seek. You do remember this game, right? Can you remember the rules? Ok, I will still list them here, and comment on them and explain its educational side. The first rule is that every player must obey the rules. I know, I know it’s obvious, but if players would not respect the rules, would there be any point for the rules to exist? Every child must learn and obey them, or else they are not allowed to play the game. The educational part of this is that the child learns to accept the fact that he cannot do everything he wants, that there are some limits and he must not pass them in order to keep his privileges.

One of the children in the group is chosen to count to 100 at the home tree (this helps young children learn the numbers in a pleasurable way, not like in school), without peeking (this educated the child to use fair play in all areas of the life). Meanwhile, the others must find a good hiding place, one that is both hard to discover and close to the home tree. This stimulates the child to think fast to the best solution to a given task.

After he finished counting to 100, the child says “Ready or not, here I come” and then he must search for the other players. He must be very careful. Once he finds a player hiding, he must run back to the home tree and shout his name. He must be vigilant so that he can hear any sound that might indicate the position of the other players.

The players who are already spotted must not tell where the others are hiding. This too educates children to use fair play.

The first player spotted is the next one to count to 100.

You’d never think that hide and seek, one of the most common games in childhood, could be so educational, right? Yes, it is a very educational game. And it’s not the only one. Pick any game you liked playing when you were a child, and analyze its rules, as I did above. You’ll be amazed. Hide and Seek is oriented mainly towards developing fair play and physical skills. Here’s another example of child educational game that helps developing more advanced skills: Monopoly.

I won’t bore you with its rules. This game introduces your child into the basics of modern business life. Acquiring high value properties, negotiation, taxes. Yup! This game educates your child to become the biggest businessperson on the Wall Street. Monopoly has rules that are more complex and it requires greater concentration.

Specific jargon and names that mean much to the entrepreneurs get your child closer the world of business. Toys are amongst the first objects a child gets in contact. Understanding how things work is a direct result of solving problems with toys like “Why this fits there?”, “Does that fit here?”, “How big is that?”.

Educational toys help your child learn to grab, pull, push, synchronize the movement of the head with that of the hand. Toys are indispensable when playing. Playing with a great variety of child educational toys helps your child develop his imagination, understand that different objects have different properties, and learn how to combine them to create other interesting objects.

How to Shop for Comfort in Mens Footwear

Thursday, July 27th, 2006

Fit, durability and style are the key factors to look for when purchasing mens footwear. The top criteria, however, must be comfort. No one is going to wear fashionable shoes for long if they are not also comfortable. Shoes that pinch, bind or cramp your feet can make you miserable, and can also damage your feet.

Shopping for mens shoes should always focus on fit and comfort first, and finding a fashionable, stylish brand second. Quality shoemakers know this and offer a wide range of comfortable footwear options. Brands that are merely fashionable are not going to serve you well if they don’t fit right.

Shopping for shoes that are comfortable and also look good is easier than ever. In order to get a proper fit, you should shop for shoes later in the day, when your feet are larger, and be sure that the brands you try on aren’t too tight. You should be able to wiggle your toes. You shouldn’t hold on to the old notion of foot size - your body changes, and you really should get your feet measured each time you buy shoes. Also, make sure that you get both feet measured, as sometimes one foot is larger. The shoes should fit the larger foot comfortably.

How Do They Fit?

For the most comfortable shoes, you should try them on with the same socks that you will normally wear with the shoes. Make sure you try on both shoes, and walk around the store a bit before purchasing. Buckle or lace up the shoes as you normally would during regular wear. Make sure they fit and bend in the same places that your foot bends. Don’t buy leather shoes that are too tight and expect them to stretch out and be more comfortable once they are “broken in.” They should be comfortable when you try them on and walk.

An experienced sales person in a store with a knowledgeable staff can help you find the right fit and the right styles for your needs. They will be able to steer you toward brands that offer special features for your personal fit needs, such as arch support, and proper cushioning.

How to keep your baby happy while traveling - Games

Thursday, July 27th, 2006

With the holiday season approaching a lot of parents are faced with the wonderful world of baby air travel. One of the biggest challenges faced by parents of children of all ages is keeping the kids happy and busy while traveling in the car or on an airplane. This is especially true on long haul flights or intercontinental flights. The challenges faced by parents of infants and toddlers can be even greater than those faced by parents of older children. Luckily, however, there are a number of strategies parents can use to make sure traveling with their baby is a joy and not a source of stress.

Toys and games are some of the best ways to keep babies and toddlers quiet and entertained while on the road. There are a great many toys, books and games which are designed just for traveling situations. These travel items may include things like fun and colorful pop up story books that parents can read to their babies on the plane, fun games the infant can play by his or herself, and even fun computer games the baby can enjoy.

As with any items designed for babies and young children, the best traveling toys and games will have vibrant bright colors to capture the attention of the baby, as well as interesting and fun shapes to keep them focused on the game.

Games that parents can play with their infants are a favorite among both new mothers and babies. The best games are those that can be played in several different ways, and those that are engaging enough to keep the interest of even the youngest baby even on a long car trip.

In order to ensure that the baby will continue to be entertained during the entire trip to grandma’s house, as well as on the way home, it is generally a good idea to bring along several different types of games and toys. Remember that babies and young children can often have short attention spans, and the game they loved yesterday may not interest them tomorrow. Having a good selection of games and toys is the parent’s best assurance that the infant will continue to be entertained throughout the entire trip.

Three Lessons Katrina Should Have Taught Us

Thursday, July 27th, 2006

I have listened with a certain degree of sad amusement to all the political and media hoopla about “what went wrong” with the Hurricane Katrina disaster response. Fingers are pointed in every direction, resignations have occurred, and shrill voices demand explanations and investigations.
The truth of the matter is that the Hurricane Katrina disaster was very much a textbook case. Though unprecedented in scale, what happened on the Gulf Coast was essentially the same thing that has happened time and time again in other disasters, and what will undoubtedly happen again. The government response was quite predictable in its timing and scope, as were the actions of those involved in the disaster and the reactions of those not involved.
There were lessons to be learned from Hurricane Katrina. Unfortunately, it is already clear that they were not learned. New Orleans will be rebuilt, but not in a way that makes its inhabitants significantly safer or less vulnerable to the next hurricane that comes along. There will be token improvements in infrastructure and token changes in emergency management teams, but in the end little will be accomplished. Old faulty plans will be replaced by new faulty plans, hard issues will be ignored, bold decisions will be forgotten, and life will quickly return to naive normality.
What We Didn’t Learn
1. Government response will always be slow.
Local government officials and public servants such as doctors, firefighters and police officers are victims too. The minute a major disaster hits, all local emergency plans are forgotten. Just like you, local officials will go check on their homes and families before worrying about anyone else’s needs. Many of them will be injured or stranded. Their phones won’t work, and they can’t get to the office any easier than you can. Local civil servants who are themselves suffering from lack of food, shelter and clean water are not going to be of much use to anyone.
The first substantial aid is going to have to come from regions outside the disaster area, and it is going to take three to seven days to arrive. When it does arrive it will be poorly coordinated due to lack of communication and authority squabbles between local and outside officials. Only families, neighborhood organizations and local religious congregations can provide social structure and quick assistance in the first few critical days, and they can only do so if they are prepared.
2. A significant portion of the populace will never evacuate.
No matter how severe the impending disaster or how much advance notice there is, many people will neither leave their homes nor make sufficient preparation. Some, out of a twisted sense of immortality, will attempt to ride out the storm. Others, often the very rich and the very poor, will cling to their homes and possessions with the tenacity of the proverbial monkey in the trap. Others with a sense of criminal opportunism will stay with the intent of looting or doing mischief. Some will be truly unable to leave due to their circumstances. And some will simply procrastinate until it is too late.
Regardless of motivation, it is a safe bet that at least ten percent of the populace will not cooperate with authorities in any evacuation or preparedness effort. These are the same people who will sustain most of the casualties, require most of the rescue efforts, and need the most help as rebuilding begins. Those individuals who are prepared and who heed advance warnings are those who will survive and prosper.
3. People will build in dangerous areas regardless of risk or past history.
Most of New Orleans is below sea level, protected from inundation only by a series of levees. And the city is gradually sinking. The city has been flooded before, and it will undoubtedly flood again. Yet people continue to build low buildings on low ground. The memory of Katrina will remain fresh for a time, and some will be careful. But it will not be long before people forget the power of the wind and the sea, and begin again to build unsafe buildings in unsafe areas, with no plan for escape. Only those who remember and learn from the past will avoid the next calamity.
A Word to the Wise
We live in a time when disasters, both natural and manmade, are becoming more and more frequent. The voice of sacred prophecy warns us that the trend will continue. It is neither safe nor prudent to assume that disaster always strikes somewhere else, or that once it has struck, it will not hit the same place again. Everyone needs to learn and practice the principles of preparedness, self-reliance and provident living. Only by so doing can we live without fear in these turbulent times.

What Really Is The IQ Score, Anyhow?

Thursday, July 27th, 2006

Do you know what the IQ score is? No, no, no. I don’t mean
if you know about it; everyone knows about the IQ score, but
hardly anyone knows what it is. And even though no one is
really certain about what the IQ score is, or how it is
calculated, society puts a lot of pressure on us if it seems
too “low”, or makes us feel like we have extra
responsibilities if it is really “high.” Well, let me clear
some things up for you right now.

It is generally known that the IQ is a number, that the
number measures level of intelligence, and that the level of
intelligence is determined by the individual’s performance
on an intelligence test. Beyond that the average person
knows little about the IQ.

The letters IQ stand, of course, for Intelligence Quotient.
This quotient is obtained by dividing mental age by
chronological age and multiplying the result by 100.

It is Mental Age that is supposedly measured by the test.
For example, if a child’s test score indicates a mental age
of nine years and the child is actually aged eight years and
six months, his IQ would be 106, and the whole thing is
calculated like this: 9/8.5 x 100 = 106

Another child who makes the identical score but whose
chronological age is ten years would have an IQ of 90, and
that is calculated like this: 9/10 x 100 = 90

So, the question is then, what is Mental Age?

Mental Age is the average score made by people of a
particular age group. Mental Age is arrived at by a process
known as “standardizing testing.” The test is given to a
large number of people of all ages and of presumably similar
backgrounds.

When the results for the test are averaged for each age
group that took it, that average test score becomes the
yardstick that measures all other people of the same age. So
if a person of the same age gets a lower score, the math
would calculate that person to have a lower than average IQ.
And if a person get a higher score, they would end up having
a higher than average IQ.

Play Is Serious Business For Childrens’ Intelligence

Thursday, July 27th, 2006

Too many parents consider play as simply a means of
diverting and distracting their children. Playthings are
often seen as a means of keeping children happy, rewarding
them, keeping them out of mischief, and giving parents free
time.

Not often enough do parents think of play and toys as
fundamental aspects of a child’s education, as a means
through which children learn to understand the world around
them, and as the primary method by which children acquire
many basic skills.

Parents can help make their children’s play stimulating by
doing three things.

First, they can adopt an attitude of
conscious, deliberate planning in which play is regarded as
one of the most important aspects of their children’s
environment.

Second, they can see to it that their children
are provided with the kinds of toys and playthings that will
help develop the widest possible varieties of skills and
abilities.

Third, they can assume a direct, participating
role in their children’s play.

Planning a child’s play does not mean planning each activity
for every moment of the child’s playtime. On the contrary,
children should have maximum independence in choosing their
own activities. And, within the limits of the daily routine
of the home, a child should also choose the time for their
activities, as well as the duration of each. Good
planning makes sure that play is as varied and stimulating
as possible.

A child should play at different times, with friends, with
parents, and by theirself. This play should include, within a
period of about a month, all or most of the following types
of activities, each geared to the age level of the child.

Here are 5 of them:

#1. Games
Games are perhaps the most basic of all forms of play. From
peek-a-boo to chess, from pat-a-cake to baseball, games
occupy a central role in the lives of most children from
infancy to adolescence. Games may be physical or mental. In
general they involve the development of skills, although
some lead to the acquisition of information.

#2. Arts and Crafts
Arts and crafts give children many opportunities to express
their desire to make things. Crayons, paints, clay,
construction paper, scissors and paste, wood, leather, felt,
and cardboard are among the materials that help children
develop their creative imaginative, and aesthetic abilities.
Arts and crafts also develop skills in manipulation,
perception, and analysis.

#3. Construction Play
Construction play involves assembling objects from what are
usually prefabricated parts. It is less creative than arts
and crafts, but is also useful in developing many skills.
Putting together a set of railroad tracks and trains is a
form of construction play, as is play with erector sets,
Tinker toys, blocks and the like.

#4. Projective Play
Protective play is play in which a child adds dramatic and
emotional meaning to activities with representative
toys-dolls, trucks, soldiers, homemaking sets, and doctor
kits. Its great value lies in the role playing done by the
child rather than in the development of specific skills.

#5. Hobbies
Hobbies which cannot be otherwise classified will generally
fall under the heading of collecting activities. Collecting
stamps, coins, rocks and minerals, butterflies and insects,
sea shells, and leaves are all common and popular hobbies.
While some help in the development of certain skills, their
greatest value is in the considerable knowledge a child can
acquire in pursuing them.

Most play can be classified in one of these five groups,
and, ideally, play should include all of these types. Also,
as skills develop, the activities should move to a higher,
more mature level.

However, a child does not automatically vary his play or
develop in it. This is where the parent’s planning comes
in — continually making the child aware of the broad
opportunities available to him in play; initiating certain
activities during playtime; making suggestions when the
child needs and wants them; buying toys that will, in
themselves, lead to new pursuits; stimulating new interests
and ideas in any of a variety of ways. The parent should not
manage the child’s play, but should try to nudge it in the
right directions.

Finding a Home and a Mortgage

Sunday, July 2nd, 2006

The Traps and the Tips
Buying a home is a big step. It is one of if not the biggest investment you will make in your life. It very often represents a huge portion of your gross annual income. When you consider things like mortgage repayments, insurance, repairs and rates among a few, it can represent as much as 40% or more of your earnings. In other words, you want to get it right!
There are a number of steps you can take to protect yourself , such as making sure you have all the right information to make informed decisions with and to insure you get the best deals. Taking a bit of extra time and care upfront will save you a lot of grief. We attempt here to give you some basic tips and to point out some of the easily avoidable traps to help ensure that becoming a home owner is a rewarding and hopefully profitable experience.
Tip 1
Make sure you qualify for a mortgage before you start hose hunting
While you may think you would qualify, it is best to get pre-approval based on your credit history, combined income, assets etc. to to make sure you qualify for a loan. It seldom costs you anything to get pre-approved by banks or mortgage companiesand there are many advantages.
ú You have a budget to work with so you don’t waste your time looking at places that are outside your ability to borrow.
ú You get a clear picture of the added costs of purchase and the ongoing costs associated with a home of the value you are approved for. This is very important! Buying a home is only the first step. You need to be sure you can keep up with the ongoing expenses as well.
ú You have greater negotiating power with the vendor when they know you have been pre-approved. It means that they are closer to a sale with you than with other, non-approved prospective buyers. This leverage will sometimes result in savings of thousands of dollars on the purchase price.
ú Perhaps the most important advantage is the heartbreak it can save you when you fall in love with a house and find out later you just can’t get the mortgage for it.
There are many traps you can easily fall into if you are not aware of the in’s and out’s of the home purchase process.
Trap 1
It’s not a good idea to deal with a real-estate agent who represents both you and the buyer.
You want to be comfortable that the agent you are using is either looking after your best interests or that you understand that they represent the buyer and are motivated to get the highest possible price for them. This helps you to keep a clear perspective on any discussions you have.
Trap 2
Select your mortgage vendor carefully
The natural inclination is to select a mortgage vendor based on the rate. The problem with this is there are many other factors that can result in the effective rate being higher. Also, you should consider things such as the convenience of direct debit and Internet banking for mortgage payments. You can often get other services like credit cards, savings accounts and personal loans among others, at preferred rates. In some cases, you can get re-draw facilities that allow you to make extra payments to lower your mortgage but then re-draw against the over-payment if you ever need it. Obviously this could be very important if you hit a bad patch and can’t make your payments. The net result of these other services may mean you get a better deal from a mortgage lender with a higher published rate.
Sometimes the real-estate agent for the vendor will recommend a mortgage vendor. It is wise to be suspicious of this.
Tip 2
Get your mortgage quote in writing
When your selected mortgage company quotes you a rate; make sure you get it in writing. That usually means you have to get loan approval first. Make sure you get your rate locked in for as long as possible just in case you have difficulty finding a home you like. Make sure you get the approval and rate commitment in writing.
Trap 3
Assuming that things discussed will be remembered and in the contract
Often a lot of things get discussed when you are looking at a home. Especially when you have been back several times. After a while it is natural to assume things that have been said will go into the deal but it just isn’t safe to rely on either your memory or the especially, the memory of the agent. Make sure you get everything you agree in writing! Even little things can wind up costing you a lot of money and frustration if they are missed I the final deal. Things like window coverings, light fixtures, appliances, carpets can be removed and if they were not in the contract, there is nothing you can do about it.
Tip 2
Make sure the property inspector is properly accredited and working for you
This is especially important on a property that is not new. New properties will have a warranty covering most aspects of the construction, fixtures and appliances. With existing properties, a good inspector will identify all the issues that should be considered. Often these things can be written into the contract to be repaired before the deal is complete, but if not they can certainly be used to negotiate a better price. Getting a property properly inspected will also help assure you don’t wind up with expenses you can’t afford. Even so, it is advisable to allow for things that may have been missed.
Tip 3
Read everything before signing
While we all like to trust people, there are many ways of wording agreements that give the vendor ways out of things. If you don’t feel confident in reading it all yourself, it is advisable to get professional assistance. Even though it will cost you money it may save you a huge amount of grief later.
Tip 4
There are big benefits to shopping for insurance carefully and early.
Leave yourself time to shop around for your insurance. It is possible to save hundreds of dollars a year. Also, policies vary greatly in what they offer so make sure you are getting the best value for money. Strat the process as soon as possible to give yourself time to do it properly. Remember to make sure you have considered any improvements you plan in the coverage.
So, as you can see, buying a home can be tricky but if you are prepared and know what to watch out for you are in good shape to make the right decisions. The peace of mind this provides you when you are shopping is worth it’s weight in dollars. Keep a check list with you at all times and as always, it is highly advisable to use qualified professionals to help you. Check everything carefully and you won’t be writing as many cheques afterwords.
Happy hunting!

Plant Floribunda Roses For All-Season Blooms

Sunday, July 2nd, 2006

This Latin name translates as “many flowered” or “abundance of flowers” and the Floribunda rose surely lives up to its name. These roses are among the most colorful of the modern roses. Their blooms are arranged in low-growing large clusters.

Many consider the Floribunda a better variety than the Hybrid Tea, their ancestor, largely because of its capacity to continue producing blooms over an extended period of time. Furthermore, they are much more hearty and resilient than Hybrid Tea roses.

Floribundas are available in a vast array of colors and styles and can grow as high as 4 feet. They are often grown for display rather than as a cut flower. Planted as an elegant landscape bush, they can produce abundant color for many seasons.

The Rob Roy has become very popular in recent years. It blooms in a deep red color and proffers a sweet soft scent. As long as there aren’t any severe frosts, they will bloom continually from spring until late fall. They produce an extremely bold showing when planted in large clusters.

Planting New Roses

Select an ideal sunny garden location and get your soil ready. Active blooming roses flourish best in a few inches of organic mulch. For best results, enhance it with a rich compost of manure or other organic matter.

You should provide generous spacing in which they can grow. Arrange your bushes from 18 to 24 inches apart from one another.

Dig a hole that will be deep enough for roots to spread without any restriction, about 8 to 10 inches deep. Adding bone meal to the soil is another good idea, as it is high in phosphates.

Now you’re ready to plant. Remove each rose bush from its container and place gently into the ground. Backfill the hole with loose soil. Then, using your palm, pack any loose soil firmly. Repeat this process for every plant.

When you’re done, water every new plant thoroughly. Continue watering your new roses on a daily basis for the first 2 weeks. After that, a weekly irrigation is usually enough.

Maintaining Healthy Roses

Late winter is the best time to prune. Most gardeners prune in January or February, depending on their local climate. Remove all debris first, and dead foliage from the plants and around their bedding. Clip off all dead bark-like canes. In order to promote new growth for the next season, remember to remove all the old flowers.

If it’s warm enough, it’s a good idea to fertilize the ground with organic matter at this time.

Although you should try to maintain some shape to your rose bushes, be gentle with the cuts. Many horticulturists say that Floribundas, in their first year, flourish with a cane 6 inches long.

Now, just sit back, relax and watch your flowers bloom beautifully for many months, and years, to come.

Sewing - A Wonderful Pastime

Tuesday, June 20th, 2006

To think that in the beginning the only sewing patterns used were to measure from ankle to dirt and chop off the animal skin so that it would not drag on the ground. Now you can get sewing patterns for everything from a simple square sewn together to create a throw pillow to an elaborate wedding dress. You can find sewing patterns by the thousands at any fabric or specialty store, and find specialized catalogues, which cater to custom sewing patterns for any size and style. You can now also buy sewing patterns online from all the classic pattern manufacturers, and the technology of the internet allows formerly unknown pattern manufacturers a chance for the spotlight.

Sewing patterns are simply sheets of tissue paper, which are marked with the dimensions needed in order to produce the garment pictured on the front of the package. When laying sewing patterns on the fabric be sure to avoid laying them on the wrong size or against the wrong part of the grain. It is advisable to take a sewing class before you tackle a pattern, which can be daunting to the novice seamstress.

Sewing can be a wonderful pastime. Sewing patterns for clothes, plush toys, home d‚cor, etc. are endless. Stop in any fabric store and look at the array of fabrics to compliment your home d‚cor or your fashion statement. Many fabric shops offer free or low cost sewing lessons. If you need a wonderful hobby, then sewing could be your answer.

Child Custody Evaluation

Tuesday, June 20th, 2006

A child custody evaluation can be ordered by a court if you are involved in a custody dispute with your spouse. The custody evaluation can be required in an initial custody case or in a subsequent case if one of the parents requests that the issue of custody be modified. If you are seeking primary custody of your child, you’ll want to know the guidelines for the child custody evaluation that you will have to undergo. To some extent, these guidelines vary from state to state, so you will need to discuss the child custody evalutaion process with your attorney or your state family court.

In general, a child custody evaluation involves a series of meetings between the parents and children and a professional who will assess the custody issue. Sometimes that professional is a psychologist. Sometimes it is a professional with an Masters and sometimes a Doctorate degree. In some states the professional simply investigates and reports the details of the investigation to the court. In other states, the professional doing the child custody evaluation actually gives the court a recommendation as to how custody should be determined.

The manner in which a child custody evaluation is used by a court can also vary from state to state. In some states, the judges put a higher priority on the wishes of the children and that issue is addressed in the custody evaluation. In some of those states, the child’s wishes are considered if the child has attained a certain age. InIllinois, the child’s wishes is a key factor. In other states, it is only one factor or not a factor at all. In Alabama, a chid’s desire is not considered as a reliable factor in determininig custody, so the factors to be given priority over the child’s wishes in the child custody evaluation are more focused on the well being an safety of the child.

A child custody evaluation can involve an investigation into moral habits and issues such as alcohol or drug use, church affiliation and family support system. Other issues that can and often are reviewed in a custody evaluation include factors that are unrelated to moral habits, but which are more focused on the determining which parent can satisfy the child’s needs, include the ability to provide an appropriate home, school support, and so forth.

A child custody evaluation can take months to conclude. The investigation aspects can include a review of any existing counseling records for the family, either or both parents, or the children, any mental health records for any of those parties, any criminal records, school records for the children, and one or more interviews with each parent and child and any other individual that the court deems appropriate. For example, if a companion or significant other is living with a parent, that person could have an impact on the day to day lives of the children. The court may want that person included in the child custody evaluation. Some of the evaluation interviews are conducted individually, and some are conducted with parent and children together. That format is dictated by the professional conducting the custody evaluation.

If you are involved in a custody dispute and you will be involved in a child custody evaluation, speak with your attorney about the process that you and your children will be subjected to. Be prepared and open and provide all of the information that is requested of you. Most of all, find out what you are able to say to the children to prepare them for the interviews that they will have to attend.

The History of Teddy Bears

Tuesday, June 20th, 2006

Teddy bears have been around since 1902. The teddy bear came to being when President Theodore Roosevelt refused to shot a black bear held captive by his hunting party. Also worth noting is that President Roosevelt’s refusal to shoot this captive bear became a very popular political cartoon by Cliff Barryman.

A Brooklyn shopkeeper was inspired by the cartoon. The shopkeeper then asked President Rosevelt his permission to name a toy bear “Teddy”. Thus became the creation of the teddy bear.

It is also worth noting that the teddy bear was born in Germany between 1902 and 1903.

The first teddy bears did not have cuddly faces or smiles, in fact, the first teddy bears had expressions which could best be described as stoic. Teddy bears were also quite stiff, the bendable arms and legs and soft, plush bodies came much later.

Now teddy bears are still the number one item to give babies as their first toy, the prize to win your girl on your first date, and most importantly, the toy of choice for law enforcement to give to children in sad, unsafe situations to help them calm down and feel safe.

The market for collectible teddy bears has seen significant growth in the last several years. A collectible teddy bear is very different than the typical store bought teddy that you might give a child. The industry defines collectible teddy bears as hard, not floppy, and fully jointed (meaning arms, legs, and head are moveable). The artists however, also determine collectibles. Steiff teddy bears and others have a very high collectible value.

The 3 Types Of Roses

There are several rose classification schemes used throughout the world. But the most popular system is that proposed by The American Rose Society (in cooperation with the World Federation of Roses). While the other systems are still in use, the majority of internationally established societies have adopted this one.

According to the American Rose Society, there are 3 main groupings of roses: the Species, Old Garden Roses, and Modern Roses.

Species Roses

This is the ancestor of every rose and are commonly referred to as “wild roses.” They are easy to identify. Usually they have 5 petals, bloom once a season, and are often thorny shrubs or climbers.

Several popular Species Roses are: Cherokee Roses, Dog Roses, Gallic Roses, French Roses, and Redleaf Roses.

Species Roses flourish in temperate climates, and can be found throughout the Northern Hemisphere.

Old Garden Roses

Unlike Species Roses, which existed millions of years before humans walked the earth, Old Garden Roses are a class identified as of 1867.

Most Old Garden Roses bloom once a season, usually at the start of summer. They grow in several shrub and vine sizes. Although colors can vary, this class are usually white or pastel in color. These “antique roses” are generally preferred for lawns and home gardening because they are easy to grow.

Some Old Garden Roses are: China, Tea, Moss, Damask, Bourbon, Hybrid Perpetual and Noisette roses. Many antique roses have a strong, sweet scent, which makes them very popular.

Modern Roses

Old Garden Roses are the predecessors of Modern Roses. Any rose identified after 1867, is considered a Modern Rose. Very popular, This group is the result of crossbreeding the hybrid tea with the polyanthus (a variety of primrose).

The colors of Modern Roses are varied, rich and vibrant. Most roses in this class will flower repeatedly with the proper care. Perhaps that is why horticulturists find this class so attractive.

The most popular roses found in the class of Modern Roses are: the hybrid tea, floribunda, and grandiflora. Although Modern Roses are adored by florists and gardeners, they do require a little extra care, and do not adapt well to colder environments.

Further Classification

After a rose has been classified into 1 of the 3 main groupings, it can be further classified by color, scent, ancestry, date of introduction, growth habit, blooming characteristics and size. It is not always possible for horticulturists to classify every rose, especially the hybrid roses which can seem to be a grouping all their own.

But after a point, it is time to quit classifying and start growing. I think we have reached that point.

Home Weather Stations

Friday, June 16th, 2006

In this age of digital technology, with instant access to up-to-the-minute data, forecasts, and images from the National Weather Service (NWS) and innumerable other online sources; with timely reports from local broadcasters and cable television networks; with personalized forecasts and storm alerts sent directly to your email, pager, or cell phone; why would anyone need a home weather station?

The answer to that question lies right there in your backyard, where the weather conditions you experience at home are often not the same as any of those resources might suggest. We know that all too well living here in southwest Virginia, as weather conditions up on the mountain ridges can be completely different from those down in the valleys. Fortunately, keeping an eye on local weather conditions using your own state-of-the-art weather station has never been easier or more affordable. Whether simple or elaborate, home weather stations will provide you with information that cannot be obtained anywhere else. And having the ability to glance over at your weather station console from the comfort of your couch or armchair is not only convenient, but fascinating as well.

Depending on desired features and accessories, electronic weather station prices can range from as little as $30 to as much as $3,000 or more. Available in either wireless or cabled versions, these highly accurate weather instruments monitor a variety of weather conditions: temperature and humidity (both indoors and out), atmospheric pressure, precipitation, wind direction and speed, dew point, wind chill, and heat index - all displayed within the comfort of your home! More advanced weather stations offer enhanced features such as faster sampling rates, extensive data graphing and history, and additional sensors ranging from ultraviolet, solar radiation, and evapotranspiration to soil temperature/moisture and leaf wetness. All electronic weather stations include a clock and many of them are radio controlled, resetting themselves daily to the official U.S. government atomic clock located at Fort Collins, Colorado.

Cabled weather stations use a cable to connect their weather sensors to the indoor console. Drawbacks include the risk of lightning (must use lightning arrestors!) and having to drill a hole in the wall to link the two, but cabled units are generally less expensive than wireless units. Wireless weather stations use radio signals (typically in the 433 MHz band) to transmit measurements from the weather sensors to the indoor console, eliminating the need to string cable and drill holes. The maximum “unobstructed” (or “line of sight”) range between the sensors and indoor console can vary between models, from 80 to 1000 feet. However, their “effective” range is determined by the building materials their signals must penetrate (walls, siding, roof structure, etc.) and by sources of radio interference. As a rule-of-thumb for a typical installation, the effective range is about a third of the rated unobstructed range.

Weather station sensors need to be placed or “sited” properly to provide accurate measurements. Once installed, sensors transmit their data to the indoor console, which updates the display and records the readings at an interval set by the manufacturer. This interval may vary depending on the type of measurement (temperature, wind speed, rainfall, etc.) or may be fixed at one interval rate regardless of the type (every minute, every three minutes, etc.).

Some home weather stations are capable of interfacing with a computer, either included as part of the package or available as an optional accessory. A computer-linked weather station offers not only real-time display of weather measurements on your computer monitor, but also provides for advanced data collection and graphical weather analysis. And with a dedicated internet connection, you can even post weather data to your own weather web page or become a part of the process by sharing your readings with the Citizen Weather Observer Program (CWOP), which forwards the information in a format that the National Weather Service can use. Even if your weather station isn’t connected to a computer, you can still participate as a volunteer Skywarn “spotter,” providing your local NWS weather forecast office with important weather measurements and severe weather reports.

Interest in weather is nearly universal and the information that home weather stations provide, combined with additional relevant study, can offer you an opportunity for a rewarding lifelong hobby. Most have discovered that their home weather station has given them a better understanding of weather, which has heightened their interest in other aspects of the natural world. After all, weather observation is not just confined to where you live.

Make A Stunning Dried Hydrangea Wreath

Friday, June 16th, 2006

Dried hydrangea wreaths are so beautiful and versatile in a home, and a lot of fun to make as well.

You can either purchase already dried hydrangea flowers from your local craft store, or you can dry your own. The biggest trick when drying your own is the timing of when you pick the flowers. It is best to pick them right before you anticipate your first fall frost. If
you pick them mid-summer, they just will not dry
correctly.

You can either hang them upside down in a darkened room to dry, or you can set them in a vase upright, even adding a tiny bit of water in the bottom of the vase, although even that is optional. As long as they are picked at the correct time, it’s difficult to fail with
them. It’s fun if you can, to pick several blooms from different bushes, as it will provide a nice variety of colors to the wreath. After they are dried, pick off any dead / discolored brown blooms.

Now, pick the type of base you want to use for a
wreath. My personal favorites are either Styrofoam or grapevine type wreath bases. Take some floral wire and wrap it around the wreath, then form a loop of the wire to hang from the wall, and then wrap the wreath again. You might try hanging it from the wall at this point to make sure it lies correctly, and then make any
needed adjustments while the wreath is bare.

To do a Styrofoam wreath, use a low melt point hot glue gun. Separate each bloom into smaller florets. Hot glue each floret into the wreath base, actually poking the stem down into the Styrofoam base. With each bloom, space it out over the surface of the wreath, for example; a floret at the top, next left side, bottom,
then right side, then inside the circle of the wreath, and outside of the wreath. Continue to do this with each bloom until you fill it.

Balance is what you are looking for. Balance in
shape, you don’t want any sticking out way above the others, you don’t want one side of the wreath to be fuller than the other. Try stepping back and looking at a distance and just think “balance of shape”.

The second area to look for is balance of color. This is the purpose of doing each bloom all over, then filling in, so you achieve that balance of color. Give another once over to check on that.

Now, this wreath is either finished, or you can add perhaps add small sprigs of dried baby’s breath to it. Really depends on the look you want. Sometimes the simplicity of only the hydrangeas is stunning.

For a grapevine wreath, it’s the same principal but a different look. You can tie a bow on the wreath if you want (if you do, do so before adding flowers), or ribbon. I like to leave bare spaces on these to be able to see the grapevine portion as well. Again,
look for balance. You can also add dried roses to it or any other type of dried flowers or grasses too. You can get really creative with these and come up with very different looks. Experiment to your heart’s content.

Many times people expect dried floral arrangements to last forever, and are disappointed when they start looking bad after a few years. This is a misconception. Expect them to look good for about a year, that’s really about all they were meant to last.

If they are in direct sunlight it will be a much
shorter time. However, the next year, feel free to strip the old flowers off, and make another with the same base for another year’s worth of a gorgeous hand made wreath!

Getting Students to Commit to Learning

Letting Your Children Go, So They Can Grow

The toughest thing about being a parent (or a teacher) is learning when NOT to be one. You don’t have to take my word for it, just ask Marlon. His wife was brutally attacked and killed by a man-eating barracuda, thrusting him into the role of a “single dad.”

Before you get too caught up in Marlon’s story, I must explain that Marlon is a fish, and his son’s name is “Nemo.” Yes, the scenario I just described is a scene from the Pixar blockbuster movie, “Finding Nemo.”

Although only an animation film, “Finding Nemo” portrays the real life struggles many parents face in “letting go of their children.”

As in real life, most parents (and children) don’t see the potential dangers of a parent being overprotective. And it’s easy to understand why many parents would respond the way Marlon did. Growing up in an inner city ghetto myself, there were many barracudas waiting to devour me.

Like most children, Nemo became very upset with his “loving” father’s obsession with protecting him from unforeseen danger. During one heated exchanged, Nemo uttered the phrase that strikes fear in the heart of every parent, “I hate you.” As a result of his father’s controlling behavior, Nemo intentionally rebels against his father and is consequently “fish-napped” by a diver.

After seeing this movie with my wife and my own son, three profound lessons about parenting came to mind:

1. We can only prepare our children for life’s mistakes, not prevent them.

As a child, I was amazed by how cool and calm my Mom, who was a single parent, always appeared to be raising me and my younger sister. Personally, I was scared to death of my environment. On any given day walking to school, I could be solicited by a prostitute, dodging bullets, assaulted by a gang, or watching a drug deal take place. As a child, this experience almost seemed surreal. If there’s anyone who should’ve been overprotective and controlling, it should’ve been my 4′ ft. 11″ mother.

After I graduated from college, I asked my mother how she was able to remain so balanced as a parent, and at the same time, teach us to be independent and strong. My mother simply said, “I didn’t do much; I just taught both of you right from wrong, and I just prayed that the mistakes you were going to make wouldn’t kill you.”

In contrast with Marlon, my mother didn’t control our mistakes; instead, she prepared us for them before we made them. And God answered her prayers, because even the bad ones (mistakes) didn’t kill us.

2. We have to treat our children as if they’re already the person they’re capable of
becoming.

Instead of putting the labels of “needy” and “helpless” on our children, what would happen if we gave them a label of “greatness”? I think we would be literally shocked by how great our children could become and how well they could “swim on their own.”

For instance, this past week, I asked my 7-year old son if he wanted to go to the park and shoot baskets on the “big people” basket. Of course he enthusiastically agreed. However, after his first shot, he soon realized that the 10-ft. basketball hoops were too high for him. He immediately became discouraged and started to cry. The “Marlon-nature” came out in me as I got the sudden urge to put him on my shoulders and let him make a basket the easy way — to “protect” him from disappointment. But I immediately came to my senses, and said something totally outrageous, I said, “Kendall, before we go home today, I believe you’re going to make a basket; just keep trying.”

Well, by changing my son’s label from “you’re too small” to “you’re tall enough,” he continued shooting, for what seemed like hours (actually 30 minutes), until he eventually made his first basket ever on the “big people” basketball goal. And to be quite honest with you, I don’t know who was more thrilled, me or him. But it was an experience I’ll never forget. By the time we left the park, I watched my son score 19 baskets all by himself! Nemo would’ve been proud.

3. We need to let ourselves “off the hook” by giving ourselves credit for being good parents.

Too many times, we become our own worst enemy by becoming our biggest critic when it comes to parenting. No one will argue that being a parent is one of the toughest jobs on the planet, but we shouldn’t complicate things by beating ourselves up over every mistake we make; we just need to admit them, learn from them, and not repeat them.

Sometimes it’s good to be tough on yourself, but parenting was never about perfection; it’s all about connection. Connecting with our children in a way that they will always feel comfortable in coming to us to discuss their joys and pains. Because regardless of how good or bad we think we are as parents, the only question a child really cares about is, “Were you there when I needed you most?” Being “there” emotionally for our children will cover a lot of parenting mistakes.

Marlon learned from his mistakes. But more importantly, he learned that being a parent is learning when NOT to be one. And as parents, we must come to the realization that we can’t grow the tree without first letting go of the seed. So let it go, and watch it grow.

How To Make a Leather Wallet

Friday, June 16th, 2006

I suppose if you search far and wide enough you could find the pattern to make a leather wallet from scratch, but why go to all that bother? If you don’t get the holes lines up perfectly and each piece cut just right, it’ll be a mess. Leather wallet kits are made in bulk, precision cut by machine.

Leather Wallet Kits

If you’ve been curious about making a leather wallet, it’s much easier than you think. Buy yourself a leather wallet kit and you’re off to the races. Novaleather.com has a great selection of leather wallet kits, and practically anything you can imagine in leather crafts. A quick search online for “leather wallet kit” will give you lots to choose from.

There are tons of pre-stamped designs to choose from, so you should be able to find something to match the leather wallet theme you’re looking for. Some designs even come with a blank area to let you stamp your name on it.

If you want to design the cover of the leather wallet by hand, you’ll need a few tools and an idea of how to stamp the pattern. If this is your first time, you might want to talk to somebody about which tools to start with. There are a lot of stamping tools available, but you only need a few to get started.

Here’s a quick “how to” guide to give you some ideas.

Preparing The Leather Wallet Cover

The ideal condition for stamping is leather that has been wetted, and then dried until it is cool to the touch. Success depends upon accurate placement of the stamp, and correct pounding of the mallet. A lighter mallet works best on small, delicate impressions and gives more control than a heavier version. Sharp blows leave a nice, crisp impression in the leather.

The leather should be a darker brown color at the bottom of the impression. Make sure you hold the stamp firmly on the leather so that it doesn’t wiggle when you’re pounding it. Practice makes perfect here, like anything else in leather working, do some samples first and get a feel for how much pressure you need to exert with the mallet.

The leather wallet cover you get in the kit is thick enough to make leather wallets that are quite attractive with the embellishment of various stamps. Seal the leather wallet or any other small leather items you might want to make with Super Sheen leather sealer for a protective barrier that protects against moisture and stains.

Stamping the Leather Wallet Cover

You simply wet the leather, place alignment marks on the leather so that you know where to place the stamp, and then pound the design of the stamp into the leather. Use the skin side of the leather for stamping rather than the flesh side. Try out your stamping skills out on a scrap piece of leather first to get a feel for it.

Tools to Use

* Stamp
* Mallet (lighter for more delicate stamps)
* Board on which to pound the leather

Summary

* After wetting, make sure the leather is allowed to dry until just cool to the touch
* Position the stamp over the leather exactly where you want it
* Hold the stamp firmly when pounding with the mallet
* Use sharp blows of the mallet for crisp results

Beat Your Examiners with Exam Techniques

re exam techniques better than knowledge?
——————————————

Half a century ago I learned about exam techniques. At that time I was snowed under with study, and my headmaster said that I had as much chance as the Man in the Moon of passing three Ordinary level GCE subjects.

He was right at that time! It didn’t matter how much study I did, term exam questions were always about stuff I hadn’t studied.

Then I learned that you perform best in an exam if you know more about exams rather than about the subject of the exam.

I liked that.

———————
Using Exam Techniques
———————

So I studied exam techniques. What were the results? I passed eleven GCE ordinary level subjects.

When artistic talent was handed out, my brother got it all, and there was none left for me. I panic every time I am asked to do a stick-drawing.

However in the GCE exam, my brother set out to do good art, and I used exam techniques to get good marks. To my great glee I got a better pass mark than my brother did. I was sure that proved that exams are unfair, but remained very smug.

—————
Multiple Choice
—————

My wife had a multiple-choice paper on a subject about which I knew nothing. I tried the exam techniques in my book. My wife assured me that I would have passed - without knowing anything about it.

Then came a time that I studied maths again, and I was hopelessly at sea. I learned maths where the best methods were those that worked - fast. New maths had been introduced since I was at college. Now the explanations were just nonsense to me. However when the exam came around, it was another multiple choice test, and I passed!

———————
We’ve learned nothing
———————

My daughter’s final exams were coming. I searched libraries for the most modern examination techniques, and received a great shock. All the books still advised lots of hard work. There was no mention of exam techniques at all.

They mentioned mnemonic techniques to help me remember, but I’d been using them since the middle of last century and knew how they could let me down.

The day before a university exam I decided that I would probably get a question about the life cycle of Fasciola hepatica. So I used a mnemonic technique to memorise every number in the complicated life cycle.

Next day the expected question appeared, and I remembered every number - BUT - I had forgotten the units. It was no use remembering the number 3 if I didn’t know if it was three hours, or three days, or three weeks, or three months, or three years. So I couldn’t answer the question. Fortunately examination techniques got me through the exam.
