Targeting Your Resume is So Important For Your Career

Friday, August 18th, 2006

http://www.powerfuljobsearchtips.com

Targeting your portfolio, (resume and cover letter) can get you any job you desire! The purpose of targeting is so you can find your perfect match, your dream job!

To target successfully, you need to calculate the position, do this and you will be sure to hit the mark.

When targeting the job you wish to apply for, ask yourself,”Am I responding to this position because I really want to do this job, or am I merely responding because the position is available?” Remember, there are always vacant positions to fill, but finding an open position that you truly want to perform every day, is going to take a more committed search. If you are just responding to classified ads just because they are there, you will never find a job in which you do not have to work. It is like the old adage, “Find a job you love and you will never ‘work’ another day in your life.”

It is also important when targeting your desired employment opportunity that you take some time to build a reputation within the particular field you want to work. You do this by getting to know the ‘players’. Let’s use this example: Say you want to manage the Italian restaurant down town. Would it be better if you knew the owner? Would your dream of managing this restaurant have a better chance of coming true, if you had eaten at this restaurant several times before and have made yourself known as a friendly, professional and familiar face?

If you have taken the time to talk to the proprietor and you’ve gotten to know the staff, then you have built a reputation. Now, if an opening for a manager at this same restaurant comes up, you will have a much better chance of getting the position than the applicant whose resume does not bring a personality to heart and a face to mind.

Remember that the longer you’ve been in the same field, the more likely you are to be well known. Also, the more you network with professionals from your field, the more opportunities you will have to climb the ladder of success.

Once you have fully targeted your position, and began to build a solid reputation it is time to calculate the position you are targeting. Calculating the position means that you must figure out exactly what the employer is looking for in her ideal job candidate. You must take your time to research the specific aspects that the job entails.

Now that you have calculated your position, it is time to hit your mark. You do this with your cover letter and resume. Knowing what the person looking at your resume wants to read will help you to get an interview.

When you are granted an interview, you again have to do research before presenting yourself. Figure out exactly what the employer not only wants, but, actually expects from his perfect employee.

Just as you wrote the words that would appeal to the reader of your resume, you will want to think of the words that the person interviewing you needs to hear. It is so important to communicate through your words. Hit the mark by saying the words the employer wants to hear from a perspective employee.

“Skill in the art of communication is crucial to a leader’s success. He can accomplish nothing unless he can communicate effectively.” Norman Allen.

By doing your research (targeting), building your reputation, and calculating your position, you will hit the mark and land your perfect job!

Your Resume Format – What Is The First Thing You Need To Do?

Friday, August 18th, 2006

http://www.powerfuljobsearchtips.com

The first thing you need to do before you write your resume is learn how to format it. Just as if you were cooking a new dish you would follow a recipe, so too should you follow a specific format when you type your resume.

There are three different types of resume formats you can use. First, we will talk about the Chronological resume. The chronological format is the most popular and widely used of the three resume formats. This format keeps you connected to one specific job.

There are four requirements to the Chronological resume. First is your work history. This should show it correlates to your current objectives. Working in the same field, even though you have changed companies, proves you are consistent and dedicated to a specific career path.

The next requirement of the chronologically formatted resume is the number of years you’ve worked in the same field. Showing you are experienced tells the employer that you have an asset to bring to the table.

Thirdly, you will state your present employer, or, if you are currently unemployed, you want to show that you have been out of a job for a short period of time.

Last, but very important is the length of time you have spent at each company. You will definitely want your resume to shout, “I’m not a job jumper!” The longer you have stayed at each job, the more committed and loyal you will come across to your perspective employer.

Next, there is the Functional resume. The functional resume will work best for you if the following three points relate to your situation.

First, the functional resume format is great for people with little or no job experience.
Secondly, this format works well if the last job you worked at is not in the same field as the position in which you are currently applying.
Thirdly, this specific format will work best for you if you have been out of work for a long time, but now you truly want to start working again.

The last of the three formats is the Combination resume. This type of resume combines the chronological and the functional formats by joining your skills, experience and job history together. The combination resume works well by letting a strong area make up for a weaker area. For example, if your job history is limited, but you have tremendous skill at the task you will perform if hired. The skills you possess may sway the employer to overlook your lack of employment history.

The Perfect Accent — Miniature Roses

Friday, August 18th, 2006

Indoors or out, you’ll find miniature roses very easy to grow. These little guys sometimes get overlooked because they give off little fragrance, yet they can be the perfect visual accent to any home or garden.
Compared to their full-sized cousins, miniature roses are practically maintenance-free. Just give them a “bath” once a week, and they’ll last forever.

Small is Comparative
A common misconception about miniature roses is they will make ideal houseplants. Before moving them indoors, realize that miniature roses can grow up to 4 feet in height. This large houseplant will need a very generous source of light. The micro-mini roses, however, only grow to about 5 inches tall and are just as easy to maintain.
If you’re determined to have miniature roses indoors, there are several tips that will make caring for them easier.

Planting Indoors
Place your plant in direct sunlight. They flourish in the sunniest windows of your home. If the stems appear to stretch out, leaving wide gaps between the leaves, your rose is not getting enough light. Either move the plant to a new location or provide supplemental light.
Make sure to bathe your plant weekly. Spraying will reduce the risk of a spider-mite attack. Gently mist the tops and undersides of the leaves. The spray also removes dust.
Make sure that your plant looks comfortable in its pot. If the pot is too small, the plant will be cramped. If too large, your roses will be reluctant to grow.

Planting Outdoors
Outdoors, most miniature roses bloom from spring until the winter. If covered with mulch, it will have a good chance of surviving frost and cold winters. You can plant your roses directly into the ground, a hanging basket, or in an 8 to 10 inch pot. Make sure your plant isn’t shaded by large trees or anything that will cast a shadow. These little plants love direct sunlight.
If you choose to plant your roses directly into the ground, dig a hole about 1 foot in depth and diameter. Take your rose out of its pot and gently untangle any loose roots. Place the roots down into the hole. Refill the hole with loose soil, so that your miniature roses are level with the top of the ground. Water your plant thoroughly. These same rules apply to potting your plant.

Water Faithfully
Don’t let the soil dry out. The first 3 weeks are crucial to any plant’s health. Water every day for those 3 weeks. These roses do enjoy their water! After the 3-week period is over, your goal is to just keep their soil moist. Check the soil daily — If it feels dry, give it a little water.
Miniature roses will look great in your living room, along the edges of your flower beds, or anywhere your home or garden needs a little burst of color.

How To Type A Resume For Employers

Friday, August 18th, 2006

Learning how to type a resume may feel like a daunting task. Even the most affluent writers have asked themselves, how to type a mind-blowing resume. Follow the tips in this article, and you will find the answers on how to type an outstanding resume.

First, your resume must be computer printed. The days of the almighty pen or grandma’s typewriter are behind us. No more carriage returns with the dinging bell.

You should always use black ink throughout. It is the most professional, and helps if your resume is going to be copied by your perspective employer.

Today’s computers come with several different fonts from which you can choose. However, when typing your resume, you want to stick with the traditional Times New Roman. Also acceptable are Courier, Verdana, Ariel and Monaco. Try to avoid italics and underlines, as these are difficult to scan into a database.

When typing your resume for employers, you want to use the optimal font size. It is best to use the popular size of either 10 to 12 point. For the heading, 11 to 14 point in bold type is the best. However, for the body of the resume, you will want to stick with the 10 or 12 point, and avoid using bold in the body as well.

You will want to either use a laser or bubble jet printer. You can print out several copies of your resume, and each one will be as clear as the first. You do not want to use a copy machine, as the letters could be faded. The clearer the resume is, the easier it is on the reader’s eyes, and the more professional your image will be. Also, forget the old dot matrix printer. You don’t want an outdated printer to represent you as being outdated. At the very least, you will want to show that you know how to type a resume.

Do not overlook the importance of the paper that you will use to type your perfect resume. You do not want your resume to shout, “Neon green is my favorite color!” You must always use white or ivory paper, with a matching envelope.

The most professional paper you can choose is at least a 20 lb. bond that is non-erasable. Remember, you want the whole package to scream, “Professional!” Keep the paper and corresponding envelope clean, crisp and wrinkle free.

As for margins, use the standard 1″ on the top and bottom, with 1.25″ margins on both the left and right sides.

Double space between your paragraphs and keep it short. Employers want to see a concise and to the point resume. Remember, you are not writing your memoirs, but you are selling yourself, making your first impression. Like the old clich‚, “First impressions last a lifetime.” Now that you know how to type a resume, you can find a lifetime job!

10 Slam-Dunk Crafts For Little Kids — And Bigger Kids Too!

Friday, August 18th, 2006

Crafting with young children really isn’t about creating something in particular. Most young children don’t have the foresight to see what a project is going to be.

For young children it’s more important that they have the opportunity to play and experiment with art. Kids need to use as many of their senses as possible to get the most out of crafting. This allow them to try new sensory experiences, as well as learn causal relationships.

These are my 10 favorite crafts for little kids based on all that AND the ‘fun factor.’

1. Finger painting: Finger painting is a wonderful activity for kids. It lets them ‘feel’ the craft as well as be creative. You don’t have to have finger paints to do this activity with kids. You can finger paint with homemade paint, watercolors or even mud. You can also experiment with adding
other things to the paint such as sand or glitter.

2. Yarn Painting: Dip pieces of string or yarn into paint and then drag it across the paper to paint with it. It’s a good experience to paint with something other than a brush and you can just throw the yarn away when finished.

3. Q-Tip Painting: Use Q-tips to create a painting. There are lots of ways to use a Q-tip – scrub, dot, or use it like a brush. It’s a good coordination exercise because Q-tips are small around, but it also provides a lot of interest for the child.

4. Glue Art: Draw squiggle lines on a piece of paper or let the child use their finger to make random glue spots or patterns on a piece of paper. Experiment with adding different objects to the glue. Sand, glitter, cotton, yarn, feathers, and tissue paper all work well.

5. Salt Dough Sculpture: Make a batch of salt dough and turn the kids loose with it. You don’t have to worry about them eating it (it’s safe and tastes terrible) and clean up is easier than play dough. If you want to keep their creations, let them dry overnight and then paint them the next day.

6. Toe Painting: If it’s a warm summer day, put on the swimsuits, put some finger paint into pie tins, lay out large sheets of poster paper, and let them ‘paint’ all afternoon. They will have a ball and all you have to do is hose them off when they are done (that’s my kids’ favorite part actually!)

7. Found Object Art: This project is always a sure thing because kids love to ‘discover’ things. Let your child gather up leaves, sticks, flowers, etc. and then glue them onto a piece of paper. When they are done, let them tell you about their collection.

8. Peanut Pictures: Every kid loves to play with packing peanuts — but it makes such a mess. Let them create pictures with them instead. Kids can draw on them, glue them to a sheet of paper, or glue the peanuts to each other to make a sculpture. The kids will love it!

9. Sticker Play: Turn your child loose with a bunch of stickers, markers, and a sheet of paper and let them create. It’s good for little ones to work on their coordination, and it’s fun!

10. Stamping: Kids love to use any kind of stamps. My favorites are the self-inking stamps or the double-sided markers with the stamps on one end. This may sound like pure play, but is also teaches young children cause and effect.

Getting the Right Ballet Shoes

Friday, August 18th, 2006

Ballet shoes are said to be the ballet dancer’s best friend. If a ballet dancer has the wrong ballet shoes, catastrophe can occur. Ill fitting ballet shoes can cause a new dancer to never learn the proper techniques. Improper balance and injury can also occur with ballet shoes that are not properly fitted. Any ballet dancer knows that properly fitted ballet shoes are of the up most importance.

Ballet shoes have 5 parts. These are: The quarters, drawstrings, side seams, pleats, and binding. For properly fitted ballet shoes each of these parts should be adjusted to fit the dancer’s foot to perfection. Ballet shoes should be fitted so that the dancer can feel the floor beneath them. In essence, ballet shoes should feel like a second skin.

Ballet is all about grace, poise, and technique. To attain this, a ballet dancer must have excellent fitting ballet shoes. For the best fitting ballet shoes, necessary steps must be taken. There are also some tips and tricks that can help a ballet dancer achieve this as well.

The first thing you must realize is that your feet can both be different sizes. This means your ballet shoes may not be exactly the same. It is not unheard of for ballet dancers to have two different sized ballet shoes. Try on various ballet shoes to see what fits best.

The next step to properly fitting your ballet shoes is to be sure you are wearing tights as you would be when you are wearing your ballet shoes to dance. This will help to ensure a better fit. Never try on ballet shoes without wearing tights.

Next, when you first put on your ballet shoes, pay attention to your toes. Stand flat on the floor. If your toes curl, you ballet shoes are not fitting right and you need to change your size. If your toes curl you cannot attain the proper technique while you are dancing and you will have a poor performance. You may also injure yourself if you cannot perform the proper dance techniques as a result of your toes curling. One more thing you should also pay attention to is if your ballet shoes are too big, you will curl your toes in effort to keep the ballet shoes on. This will also result in a poor performance, bad technique, and possible injury.

The next step is to criss cross your drawstrings. Then “pointe” your foot. There should be no gaping in the width of your ballet shoes. This also means there should be no extra space at any part of your ballet shoes. Also, there should be absolutely no toe room. If there is toe room you will not be able to properly “pointe” your foot. You also will not be able to feel the floor beneath you. Hence you cannot perform any dance techniques properly.

Properly fitted ballet shoes are the most important thing for a ballet dancer. With all of these things in mind, you should be able to properly fit your ballet shoes. This way you are sure to be on your way to a beautiful dance performance.

Is a mothers love, medicine

Friday, August 18th, 2006

Minus all meningitus thoughts. The flu symptons were strong. Headache, burning fever and sore throat. So what does any natural mother do when their offspring takes ill. They smother him or her with a lot of TLC and would walk to the ends of the earth just to take away the pain and suffering.

Is a mothers love, medicine

Despite all those motherly rituals mentioned above. There was no change in my nine year old sons condition. Meningitus still so distant in my thoughts..The lucozade was poured out in pints to quench his thirst and a saturated flannel to

change every minute to wipe his brow. I prayed more times to god than that of any pope for my son to pull out of this other world he had elapsed into.

A mothers love is more of a cure than any cough medicines pills or tablets, so I thought..

Humming one of his favourite tunes as I held him up close in my arms rocking him back and too.
Not even his favourite videos could pull him out of this alien world that he now belonged to

Was a mothers love slowly killing my little boy.

Every mothers worst nightmare was to befall me with the enevitable happening. Purple like bruises began to appear on his chest followed by the loss of his voice.
With trembling hands I struggled to dial 999. Please god if your up there hear my prayers, let my little boy reach 10..

When the doctor arrived he said he couldnt rule out meningitus. And so my little boy was rushed off in an ambulance at a speed that would have given Nigel Mansell a run for his money.

Thank god for flashing blue sirens.
Behind all the tears that flowed I prayed in silence for god to give me back my son.

The curtain may well have been a brick wall that separated me and my little boy in the hospital. But he was in good hands I assured myself, and that being the hands of god.

It seemed like a life time before that curtain came swishing back to have the doctor in his white coat appear before me.
I gave him lucozade I wiped his brow. I even put on his favourite videos and smothered him with all the love I could possibly give. Where did I go wrong doctor? You did nothing wrong was his reply.

Just to hear those words that there was no cause for alarm and that my little boy was going to be alright, gave me back all the strength that seemed to have drained from my body while waiting for the outcome of this nightmare.

Meningitus symptons had a strong presence the doctor said. It was a virus on the inside trying to break out.
Tears of happiness flowed like that of Niagra falls as I rushed to my little boys side.
Holding him tight kissing and cuddling him like any natural mother would do.but

I had unfinished business to attend to and that was to thank the man himself up above for hearing my cry. Now to arrange a ten year olds birthday party.

The doctor approached me and asked if he could say something before I left.

Yes of course doctor?
A mothers love is great medicine for comforting her children but when it comes to curing them. please call a doctor.

bio = We all do what we think is right, but is it right? dont leave it to chance. Consult a doctor, and make sure that your child gets the right treatment. Thats what natural mothers do.

AN OVERVIEW ON THE FINANCIAL CAPACITY OF SOCIAL SECURITY

Friday, August 18th, 2006

There have been so many reports confirming the distressing state of the finances of Social Security and so many members by now are wondering if they can really get the benefits that are due to them when their time to claim for such benefits arises.

In spite of the financial crisis that the Social Security is facing today, the Social Security Administration is confident that it can pay all benefits that are due to their members. They assured further that there would be no cuts on the benefits to be received by the current retirees but rather there would be a yearly increase on the benefits due to cope with inflation.

There are also so many reforms planned to be implemented in Social Security including those set forth by the President’s Commission that would further strengthen Social Security. The reforms are also set to ensure that scheduled benefits, including cost of living increases for would-be retirees. Moreover, the reforms will not reduce the benefits of currently disabled Social Security members as well as disabled beneficiaries.

However, in spite of all the reforms to be made in the Social Security Administration there is still the present problem in terms of finances since there is a foreseen 26% reduction in the benefits to be given for future Social Security retirees and unless the social security administration does something to diminish such problem then there would be an expected continuous reduction every year in the scheduled benefits.

The Social Security although offering retirement benefits should never be considered as a sole source of income in retirement. It is much better to have other retirement plans to further ensure that you leave comfortably when you retire. Besides having Social Security as a sole income retirement option is like sitting on a one legged chair and that does not imply stability. It’s always wise to have other options in case the Social Security Retirement benefit cannot fully suffice the entire needs of the retired member.

But just how the Social Security gets its funds? The fund of the Social Security is procured by means of the payment of the tax payers who are paying for their own benefits. The fund contributed by these tax payers is the one utilized for the payment of present benefits like payment for the retirement income of retiring members. However the excess in the fund is invested in a special-issue treasury bonds. And this is how the Social security earns additional funding for the next recipients of social security benefits.

Home Study: What Life-enhancing Skill do You Learn?

Friday, August 18th, 2006

Home Study: What Life-enhancing Skill do You Learn?

———————

You’re already doing unofficial home study when you research a project online. Study in class has its place, but…

Up to date I’ve done many courses in classrooms but only two were very useful. I’ve learned most of the useful stuff from books or the Internet.

———————–

What will help you most in life?

———————–

The most valuable thing you learn at school is to write an essay. Essays help you organise your thoughts. An essay helps you convince people. Your
feedback in a home study course will mostly be essays. This will encourage you to write a good essay.

Many years ago I read about Electronics, and took a correspondence course on the subject, and made electronic gadgets for where I worked.

Then I decided to study Electronics at college. Unfortunately the nearest I could get to it was Physics with Electronics as the main subject, so I qualified in Physics.

The lecturers were shockingly out of date. One of my classmates and I spent a lot of time instructing the lecturers. We’d learned modern stuff from books and practical use.

It has been said “Those who can, do. Those who can’t, teach.” What this means is that lecturers sat through lectures and passed exams. They go on to teach what they learned in these lectures – which is already out of date. That’s the first benefit of home study.

———————————–

Three advantages of classroom study

———————————–

1. You can get recognised certificates when you
pass exams

2. You can get a useful plan for what to study

3. Facilities for practical work

You’ll have noticed that although I learned more from my home study course, I still did a four-year course at college. I couldn’t get recognised exam certificates from correspondence courses. That was the main benefit.

If you want to study genetics and you don’t even know what a gene is, you obviously don’t know enough to plan a syllabus for your home study.

You get a useful skeleton outline from your lectures. Using my book about exams you will learn how to improve on the skeleton, but you need one
to improve on!

At home you don’t have a chemistry laboratory or a machine shop or volunteers to practice dentistry.

Apprenticeships let you learn about real life from an employer. Schools and colleges have labs and workshops for you to do your practical work.

Lecturers don’t know as much about practical work as an employer would. I hated doing chemical titrations because they took such a long time.

Then I noticed that one of my classmates took about a quarter of the time, with greater accuracy. He worked during his holidays at a chemistry lab. He showed me the tricks and I was soon flying through my titrations too.

Even if you do have a machine shop at home, you’ll be taught safe working procedure in a conventional course. That could save you from being a cripple for the rest of your life.

—————-

Instant Feedback

—————-

When I was about to hold a chunk of metal with a rag wrapped round my hand to give me extra grip, my lecturer yelled a warning. That probably kept me from losing my hand.

Even if you’re learning something safe like oil painting, you can learn faster with instant feedback from a lecturer strolling around behind the students.

Oh, you could take a digital photograph of your oil painting and shoot it down the line to an instructor, but she could be having a meal, or even be asleep if she is on the other side of the world. So you still won’t have instant feedback.

Writing essays works fine.

———————————-

Conventional courses for abilities

———————————-

It seems that conventional courses win out when you want to develop an ability, unless your parents already have that ability to pass on to you.

—————–

Knowledge courses

—————–

Of course, there are knowledge courses such as English, Philosophy, History, Anthropology where you don’t have a practical syllabus. These are
ideal for home study, and perfect for using an essay as a tool.

More and more Universities offer online courses. You can get recognised certificates with home study. You just need to be good at writing an essay (see my free report) and a few other exam techniques to succeed.

Even technical courses have lots of theory. University extension courses allow you to study the theory online. Then you just go to college for your practical work.

————

Distractions

————

A friend of mine refused to be distracted by girls or parties or sport until he completed his degree as a dentist.

I don’t think I could have overcome these distractions. If you do home study you don’t have any distractions.

Conclusion:
I prefer home study any time that it is available. However you can’t learn to sing, or karate, or dentistry without a teacher, so conventional study is often needed to supplement home study. Essay writing is particularly useful in home study.

bio = Ian McAllister discovered the easy way to writing fun essays to beat the examiner from a book as a schoolboy. He still uses the same ideas for fun and profit. Get your free report here.

Planning Baby’s Room

Monday, August 7th, 2006

Planning your baby’s room is something that is often overlooked. There will be times when you are thinking about all the different things that you need to do around your house in preparation for bringing your new bundle of joy home but you will probably not give enough attention to taking care of your babies needs as far as making sure that their room is ready for them.

Sure, most parents have the room all cute, perhaps a fresh coat of paint and some decorations themed just so. It’s great for all of your friends to look at, but have you considered that the type of decorations that you create for your baby’s room could directly impact their lives later on? You should make sure that you choose the proper colors and designs so that your new baby will be more comfortable with their surroundings. Here are a few suggestions on what to do to make your baby more comfortable.

1. Choose Soothing Colors – The color selection will not only help your baby to be more comfortable in it’s surroundings but it may also help them to go back to sleep if they wake.

2. Babies Like Shapes – Make sure that you have some simple geometric shapes put into the design of your baby’s room. Children are also naturally drawn toward animals so they are also always a great choice.

3. Soften the Lights – Make your baby’s room softly lit. You don’t need to live by candlelight but make sure that you don’t have a big overhead light glaring down into their eyes while they are trying to nurse.

By taking these and other ideas and putting them to use in your baby’s room you will see that they are happier and potentially healthier for a lifetime because of this. It may seem like a small thing but those small things really add up and your baby is defiantly worth the effort.

How to Give a Party

Monday, August 7th, 2006

Does the idea of hosting a party make you nervous? Here are some tips to help you get started.

If you have never hosted a party before, it can be a little intimidating the first few times you do it. You may feel more at ease by hosting small parties until you become more experienced.

The first step is to decide what kind of party it will be. Will it be formal, or informal? Large or small? Indoors or out? Who will you invite? Will you serve food and liquor? Do you want to have a theme? Are you celebrating any special occasion?

How much money do you have to spend? How much space do you have?

These are just some of the decisions you need to make before you start issuing your invitations.

Once you have decided on these matters, pick a date, time, and location, and draw up a list of people you wish to invite. Depending on the custom in your social circle, you can issue formal written invitations, invite your guests by telephone, or ask them in person.

Whatever method you choose, it’s a good idea to issue your party invitations at least two or three weeks in advance.

One of the most important aspects of throwing a party is to make sure that all your guests understand exactly what kind of party it will be, and what is expected of them.

Be very clear about the exact time, date, and location of the party. Here is a checklist to help you make sure your guests know what to expect:

-Is the party formal or informal?
-Is it a costume party?
-Does the party have a theme?
-Are you supplying food? Will you provide a full meal, or just snacks and appetizers?
-At what time will the food be served? Will it be a formal, sit down meal? Or buffet style?
-Are you supplying alcoholic beverages? Do you want people to bring their own beverages?
-Do you want the guests to bring anything, such as food, appetizers, party favors, or liquor?
-If you have any unique requests, make them very explicit. For example you may not want anyone to consume alcohol or smoke on the premises.
-Do you want people to bring their children, or leave them at home?
-Does the party start exactly at a certain time, or is the starting time approximate?
-Is attendance “come and go”?

A few days before the party, telephone everyone on your list to remind them again about your party, and to have them confirm whether or not they will be attending.

You can decide to have a very simple party, or you can use your imagination to turn your party into a unique event. You can get lots of great creative ideas from magazines, television programs and books to help you plan interesting activities, food, and d‚cor.

Don’t get too carried away–the focus should always be on creating a warm, enjoyable experience for your guests. You are not creating a theme park.

One of the easiest kinds of parties to host is a potluck party. In this type of party, you are not saddled with the overwhelming task of preparing all the food yourself. You simply ask each person or couple you invite to bring some food for all to share.

To be sure that there will be a substantial main dish, prepare it yourself. You can also ask one or two people to bring dishes you think would be especially popular.

Even if you are a very good cook, and prefer to do all the food preparation yourself, you will probably still benefit by asking a friend to help you get everything ready. You may want to start all your preparations one or two days in advance.

Before the party starts, be sure that the house is reasonably clean and that you have enough chairs, plates, cups and glasses for everyone. Be sure to have enough containers available for trash. Pick out some music selections that your guests will enjoy.

You will have much more fun at your own party if you let go of the idea that everything has to be perfect. Parties are not about perfection, they are about fun. Things that go wrong may seem disastrous at the time, but they may seem very funny later.

Try to be at the door to greet each of your guests as they arrive, and thank them for coming. Let them know where to put their coats. Tell them when and where the food will be served and show them the location of the bathroom.

Introduce any new arrivals to the people who are already present.

Try to get to each guest several times throughout the evening, and don’t play favorites, ignoring some, and monopolizing the time of others. If at all possible, try to speak to your guests as they are leaving and thank them for coming.

Who knows, you may enjoy hosting a party so much that you will do it again and again!

Planting and Caring for Flower Bulbs

PLANTING AND CARING FOR FLOWER BULBS
There is nothing quite as welcome as those beautiful spring flowers that seem to emerge from nowhere to welcome the arrival of spring. Bulb type flowers are really unique plants, because they spend most of their days resting quietly beneath the surface of the soil. Then right on schedule, up they come, full of bloom and vigor, and then almost as fast as they came, they go. Except for the green leafy part of the plant that tends to linger longer than we would like them to.

Despite their short bloom time and unattractive foliage after the blooms are gone, they are still a wonderful addition to any landscape. But how should you care for them? First let’s talk about how to use them in your landscape. Flowers of all kinds are best when planted in groupings. Many people buy 25 or 50 bulbs and just go around the yard planting helter skelter. That’s fine if that’s what you want, but when planted that way they tend to blend in with the landscape and really don’t show up well at all. When you plant them in large groups they are a breathtaking showpiece.

In the early spring start thinking about where you would like to create a bed for flower bulbs. Prepare the bed by raising it with good rich topsoil, and if at all possible add some well composted cow manure. Do this in the spring while you are in the gardening mood; you may not be in the fall. Over the summer fill the bed with annual flowers to keep the weeds down, and to pretty up your yard for the summer. Come fall all you have to do is pull out the annuals and plant your bulbs to the depth recommended on the package.

If you think you could have a problem with squirrels digging up the bulbs and eating them, you can also wrap the bulbs in steel wool, leaving just the tip of the bulb exposed so it can grow out of the little wire cage you’ve created. Or you can just plant the bulbs and then cover the bed with chicken wire or plastic fencing until the bulbs start to grow in the spring.

When the bulbs come up in the spring and start blooming, you should clip off the blooms as they start to wither. This keeps the bulb from producing seeds, which requires a lot of energy, and you want the bulb to use all of its available energy to store food in preparation for the bulb’s resting period. Once the bulbs are completely done blooming you don’t want to cut off the tops until they are withered and die back. The million dollar question is how to treat the tops until that happens.

Many people bend them over and slip a rubber band over them, or in the case of bulbs like Daffodils tie them with one of the long leaves. This seems to work because it is a very common practice among many experienced gardeners. However, Mike is about to rain on the parade.

I strongly disagree with this theory because back about 6th grade we learned about photosynthesis in science class. To recap what we learned, and without going into the boring details, photosynthesis is the process of the plant using the sun’s rays to make food for itself. The rays from the sun are absorbed by the foliage and the food making process begins. In the case of a flower bulb this food is transported to the bulb beneath the ground and stored for later use.

So basically the leaves of the plant are like little solar panels. Their job is to absorb the rays from the sun to begin the process known as photosynthesis. If we fold them over and handcuff them with their hands behind their back, they are not going to be able to do their job. It’s like throwing a tarpaulin over 80% of a solar panel.

In order for the leaves to absorb the rays from the sun, the surface of the foliage has to be exposed to the sun. On top of that, when you bend the foliage over, you are restricting the flow of nutrients to the bulb. The veins in the leaves and the stem are a lot like our blood vessels. If you restrict them the flow stops.

You decide. I’ve presented my case. Bending them over seems to work, but I’ve spent a lot of money on my bulbs. I want them running at full speed. What I do is clip the blooms off once they are spent, and just leave the tops alone until they are yellow and wilted. If they are still not wilted when it’s time to plant my annual flowers, I just plant the annuals in between the bulbs. As the bulbs die back the annuals tend to grow and conceal them. If one shows through I clip it off. It seems to work well for me.

Creating a Family Tree

Thursday, August 3rd, 2006

My mother is your grandmother and my sister is your aunt..is this how you teach your kids about your family? How each of us relates to each other and who is a mother to whom? Why not use a family tree to elaborate on how each of us is connected to each other? A family tree is not only exceptionally useful as a teaching tool for kids, but it gives us a whole new perspective in life too. Building a family tree can also be a fun lazy-Sunday-afternoon activity with the kids.

Building a family tree can be simple, depending on the kind of family tree you want to build. An elaborate one will take a much longer time, for example, if you want to cut out pieces of colored paper and pasting them with pictures and short write-ups on the family member. Some people will just draw a family tree and color portions of it into the family tree. Kids love it and even adults will enjoy this simple and calming activity.

Innovation and advancement in technology catches up with our needs too – because there are family tree creators in the form of softwares and computer programs that can help people create their family tree easily. Using these softwares to create a family tree takes only minutes and can be colored in and pasted over too. Using softwares to create a family tree is for people who are not keen on the paper, scissor, glue and goo concept of creating family trees. Don’t be surprised, there ARE people who are not too keen on getting down there with art papers sticking to their clothes! Kids can have fun creating family tree online too or with a software program. It depends on individual preferences, really.

A family tree is nothing more than a bunch of charts that links one person to another in a family. You can start from whichever ancestor you want. For those who are interested in genealogy, you can go as far back as you want. Creating a family tree that is as in-depth as that may require some investigation, interviewing of family members, and also research. If you can’t find your family members or are not in touch with them over some period of time, it may be a little bit more difficult to fill in the blanks in your family tree. However, with tools like www.familysearch.com, www.rootsweb.com, and www.usgenweb.vom, things are much easier than before.

So, go ahead and have some fun creating your family tree now!!

Collecting Movie Posters Today

Thursday, August 3rd, 2006

Just like collecting stamps, collecting movie posters is a fabulous way to either decorate a place or keep a piece of the movie with you for a long time to come. There are really no set rules as to what kind of movie posters to collect. Some people collect movie posters only from a certain genre, e.g. comedies and romance flicks only. And some people collect movie posters of movies from a certain period of time. Some people who are fans of all types of movies collect movie posters of ALL kinds! And then the movie posters are filed according to the time they were released or genre that the movie belongs to.

The basic general rule of thumb is that you should just collect whatever movie poster that you like. Apart from movie posters, some people collect souvenirs, lobby cards, tickets, or CDs. There’s no limit as to what you can collect apart from movie posters.

One of the most difficult thing to master about collecting movie posters is.how to keep the movie poster from disintegrating over time! Like all other types of art work, the quality of the movie posters will deteriorate. One way to preserve the movie poster is to use the `linen-backing’ method. You mount the movie poster onto a treated canvas and then place a sheet of rice paper on top of the movie poster. So, the movie poster is actually safely sandwiched between the canvas and the rice paper.

If you intend to keep the movie posters for a long period of time, you should take proper care of the movie posters and keep them away from direct sunlight. When the movie posters are exposed to direct sunlight for a long time, the colors on the movie poster will start to fade and the paper will start turning yellow. Be warned, the yellowing process is not reversible. Therefore, keep the movie posters in a safe place, away from the sun and at room temperature.

The biggest problem about having a large collection of movie posters is the space. While you may choose to frame and display some of your favorite movie posters on the walls of your office or home, you can’t possibly find enough space to display all three thousand over movie posters in your possession! A filing cabinet is the best way to file and keep the movie posters safe.

If you have children, keep the cabinets locked if you don’t want them tearing into your movie posters collections. And keep the key somewhere safe.

Tips For Buying A New Truck

Wednesday, August 2nd, 2006

If your currently shopping for a new truck you know it can be a bit confusing. I’m sure most of you have your favourite manufacture, but are unsure of just what your options may be. The following article should help you get started in the right direction for buying your new truck.

The first thing to decide is the size of the truck you want. This isn’t a very difficult decision. You will either need a compact truck or a full sized one. This all depends on your needs and your budget.

The price of a new truck can range from fairly affordable to very expensive. For a good truck with few options you are probably looking at around $20 000. On the other hand a full sized truck that is fully loaded could come in at $40 000 or more.

The engine in a truck will be very important. Small trucks will always have a V6 engine that is fairly easy on gas. Full sized trucks will usually have a V8 and will probably burn up gas quickly. If you really need lots of power for towing you can also get a diesel engine.

Over the past few years the capacity of people a truck can hold has become very important. All manufactures have done major designer overhauls to hold more people. Here is an overview of what is out there.

Regular cabs: This is your standard truck. These can hold a small number of people. You wont get anymore then 3 in the truck and really two people will be enough.

Extended Cabs: The extended cab will allow you to carry more passengers as long as you have a full size version. For the most part these can be good for carrying extra cargo.

Crew cabs: These are a pretty good replacement for a car. You will get 4 doors and can seat 5 or 6 people.

The last thing you will need to know is how long of a bed you will need. Most trucks now of days only have a 6 1/2 bed. There are some longer ones available up to 8 feet.

Baby Nursery Furniture A Booming Market!

Wednesday, August 2nd, 2006

Baby nursery furniture and baby crib sets are a growing category, representing $1.1 billion at retail last year, and expected to grow to $1.4 billion by 2009. Today’s baby furniture varies quite a bit in style, price and selection, and at over a billion dollars, there is room for a wide range of manufacturers in the nursery furniture field.

There are many top manufacturers in the nursery furniture category. The baby furniture category includes nursery furniture for children from birth through 2 years, including painted baby furniture, nursery crib furniture, bassinets, a baby table for changing diapers, glider rockers, rocking chairs, dressers, chests, armoires and bookcases. Basically anything you would purchase at a baby store while furniture shopping.

Although most of the parents claimed that they mostly shopped at discount stores they admittedly would make more extravagant purchases at a specialty baby store if there was something they really wanted. A Gen X mom talked about children strollers. She paid $300 for a stroller because she liked the features. So if a parent is willing to spend $300 on a stroller which is typically a smaller ticket item in comparison to nursery furniture what are they willing to spend on a nursery crib, an item that’s use is far more than the use of a stroller.

Things like blankets, strollers, a nursery crib mattress, a toddler bed and accessories or items that would be bought for nursery gifts or baby gifts, or furniture for children over the age of 2 are not included in the category being discussed as leading infant bedroom furniture manufacturers. This is primarily nursery furniture for babies 2 and under in the strictest sense of the word.

According to Kids Today’s exclusive Buying Trends Survey, 2.2% of U.S. households bought a nursery crib in 2004, and 2.7% bought other baby furniture. The median price point for a nursery crib in 2004 was $150, with those consumers planning to buy a nursery crib in 2005 saying they planned to spend a median of $200. Even still, 18% of consumers who bought a nursery crib in 2004 paid $500 or more.

What this tells me is that although 18% of parents purchasing a nursery crib probably planned to purchase practically but when push came to shove they were willing to spend on average and extra $300 above and beyond what they initially planned to spend. Why is this? Is it because we are seduced by all the new-fangled cribs such as the newer style of the round crib and the BRAND-NEW Corner cribs (shaped to fit in a corner)? It is common knowledge that the median prices of these specialty cribs cost much more than the traditional rectangle cribs. As far as infant furniture goes round baby cribs are a fairly new concept. I do not even remember them being available when I had my first child. Since a separate room for a baby nursery is not always an option some parents feel that the round baby cribs and corner cribs which is a new concept is the way to go, they are both big space savers.

It could also be because parents are willing to purchase the top of the line 3-in-1 cribs in hopes that they will save money in the long run? Or quite possibly is it because parents will spend just about anything on their children, trying to provide everything they were never given?

Obviously a nursery crib is the most important purchase you will make for your child.along with the rest of the nursery furniture. Nursery Furniture Manufacturers know this and cater our need to give our child “everything”. That is why nursery furniture and nursery crib sets are such a booming market!

Magnets – Attractive Little Things!

Wednesday, August 2nd, 2006

Magnets can be made by placing a magnetic material such as
iron or steel, in a strong magnetic field. Permanent,
temporary and electromagnets can be made in this manner.

That’s the boring technical information.

But for everyone else, magnets and magnetism have an almost
magical quality. They make heavy metal objects dance and
wiggle. They have an attractive force that’s invisible,
almost otherworldly. Weird stuff, but compelling too.

There are many legends accounting for the discovery of
magnets. One of the most common, is that of an elderly
shepherd named Magnes, who was herding his sheep in an area
of Northern Greece called Magnesia, about 4,000 years ago.

It is said that both the nails in his shoes and the metal
tip of his staff became firmly stuck to the large, black
rock on which he was standing. This type of rock was
subsequently named magnetite, after either Magnesia or
Magnes himself.

Stories of magnetism date back to the first century B.C in
the writings of Lucretius, and the magical powers of
magnetite are mentioned in the writings of Pliny the Elder.

For many years following its discovery, magnetite was
surrounded in superstition and was considered to possess
magical powers, such as the ability to heal the sick,
frighten away evil spirits and attract and dissolve ships
made of iron!

People soon realized that magnetite not only attracted
objects made of iron, but when made into the shape of a
needle and floated on water, magnetite always pointed in a
north-south direction creating a primitive compass.

So next time you pick up a magnet, think about its weird
nature. And I’ll bet you also move it towards something made
of ferris metal. That’s steel or iron to you – the stuff
that magnets simply love!

Types of vaccums

Sunday, July 30th, 2006

There are six kinds of vacuum cleaners, and each one is appropriate for different uses. You don’t have to rush out and buy all six, but you may find that a combination of two or three is suitable for your living situation.

Handheld. These little vacuum cleaners are great to pick up emergency spills, and to do a quick touch up before someone comes over for dinner. Keep one in your closet so it is handy and keep another in a garage where you can vacuum the car frequently.

Upright. These are considered the classic or traditional model of vacuum cleaner and they are good for most standard floors. Things start to get tricky though, when you need to move around, vacuum the stairs, or go upstairs and downstairs. Still, if you have only one or two floors in your house this is an excellent option for you.

Canister. These vacuum cleaners are smaller, lower to the ground, and usually have good portability. They haven’t always been called canister models but most of them use canisters instead of bags now. If you have two or more floors in your house, or a lot of stairs, you will probably find this model of vacuum cleaner to be much more appropriate for you.

Industrial. This is a wet/dry vacuum cleaner often used with industrial applications. For example, you may want to keep one in your workshop, garage, or laundry room, for serious spills. They are very powerful and can handle both dry and liquid messes.

Central. This is a tiny convenient system that is built into your home. The motor and dirt collecting mechanism are centrally located in the utility closet and all you have to do is plug the hose into the wall and you get convenient suction wherever you need it in the house. This is the best option if you have a lot of stairs, since there is no vacuum cleaner to carry around.

AutoVac. This is a new type of vacuum cleaner, still in its infancy. Most of them look like a little flying saucer and they are no bigger than a dinner plate. They run on tiny wheels and have a computerized memory that lets them vacuum automatically while you are away. They may not clean the floor in a specific pattern, like you might if you were doing it, but they cover the entire floor surface and go around furniture, and can even be trained to stop at the edge of a set of stairs or a doorway into a room you don’t want vacuumed.

Unison Smile and the whole world smiles with you

Sunday, July 30th, 2006

What is wrong with the world today, we have war torn countries battling it out against each other and the shocking sad part about it all is these people are neighbors. Then we have terrorism where we are forced to suspect everyone or anyone around us. Talk of paranoia. Muggings and murders now make the streets even your home a danger zone.

A force in themselves are the hurricanes christened with names that come and rip states apart and tsunamis that have the power to wipe out islands.
No matter what act of god has been dealt on us, it does not compensate for the heartache suffered by the relatives and loved ones of the thousands who perished.

Families where tragedy struck and where they lost a loved one it must be hard for them to accept and come to terms that god was behind this onslaught as some would see it

So much pain forced upon survivors and bereaved persons to bear when these assaults took place, causing havoc worldwide.

God has his reasons why these devastating tragic occurrences take place. Will we ever find out why he takes such actions. I believe it will always remain a mystery with no answers.

For the loved ones you may have lost to a freak of nature murder or on the battle field, those loved ones now stand proudly along side god in heaven. Will we ever find the real reason behind all the hatred and hurt that is going on in this world, do we really want to know? that is question

God holds his hand up to take the blame but gives us all back the courage to too survive an aftermath, and that is for all to unite.

When disasters strike, you notice how easy relief and aid work becomes with everyone pulling together. People that were once strangers bond with each other. It is sad to say that it takes death to get unison

Put hatred behind us and unite together with or without an aftermath then the world can be a better place.

Now that is what I call a major relief. Smile and the whole world smiles with you

Chess — The Basics

Saturday, July 29th, 2006

Chess is a fascinating board game that was invented thousands of years ago. Throughout its long history, it has earned acclaim and is considered to be the ‘king’ of board games. Several famous personalities were known for their chess skills. Napoleon, Nikola Tesla, Charlie Chaplin and Einstein were among them.

Chess can provide many hours of pleasure, not to mention intellectual exercise, since the game is known to improve analytical thinking, creativity and judgment.

In the past chess was mainly played by courtiers. Now everyone may enjoy this privilege. Chess attracts people of all ages from all over the world. Chess is intriguing, for it allows players to pit their wits, experience and inspiration against a competitor.

All you need to start playing chess is a chessboard and chess pieces — or if you wish to play online, you need nothing more than your computer. The chessboard is an 8″x 8″ board with alternating black and white squares; nearly everyone is sure to have seen one.

There are 32 chess pieces in total; 16 white pieces and their 16 black counterparts. One player owns the white pieces (we call this player WHITE) and the opponent (the BLACK) gets the black ones. The 16 pieces are: the King, the Queen, two Rooks, two Bishops, two Knights and eight Pawns.

When the game starts these pieces are placed in their initial, predefined positions. The arrangement is as follows: each player has his own pieces positioned along the two rows of the board (called ranks) that are closest to him. All 8 pawns are placed on the innermost rank of the 2. The rest of the pieces are placed closest to the player in the following order: Rook, Knight, Bishop, Queen, King, Bishop, Knight, and Rook. This order is from left to right for WHITE and from right to left for BLACK, so that the same pieces are opposed on each column (called a file) of the board.

To facilitate descriptions of chess positions the ‘algebraic chess notation’ was invented. It is easy to learn and helps to identify squares and pieces on the board. It works like this: viewing from WHITE’s perspective, the leftmost file is designated ‘a’, the next one ‘b’ and so on until we reach the rightmost file, which is file ‘h’. The rank that is closest to WHITE is ‘rank 1′, or the first rank. Next comes ‘rank 2′ (the second rank) and so on until we get to the eighth rank, which is the rank closest to BLACK.

Now that we have appropriately designated the ranks and files we may identify a square by looking up the rank and the file to which it belongs. Thus, still viewing from WHITE’s side, the bottom left square is the square ‘a1′, since it belongs to file ‘a’ and to the first rank. Its adjacent squares are ‘b1′ on the right and ‘a2′ just above it.

Your goal is to trap the enemy King — it’s that simple. But that is a story for another day.

6 Simple Steps to Becoming A HOT Guitar Player!

Saturday, July 29th, 2006

Learning how to play guitar well is not easy. There are so many methods and so many conflicting opinions, it makes it difficult to know what to do.

But the simple fact is, if you want to be the best you can, as soon as you can, then all you need to do is – copy what the pro’s do…

Master the Basics!

Mastering the basics means being able to play in all keys. Being able to transpose any song to any other key – on the spot preferably.

Did you know that 95% of guitarists DON’T master the basics. Oh yes, they mean to get around to it, but they hardly ever do.

Why is that? Well, it’s because they think it’s boring, complicated and too much hard work. And most of all – no fun! And mostly they were right. Well, it needn’t be that way. Mastering the basics can be a lot of fun if you go about it in a methodical set-by-step way.

What does mastering the basics entail?

There are 6 basic steps you need to follow:

1. Learn the names of all notes on all strings, one string at a time.

2. Learn how to construct a C Major scale.

Basic must-know guitar theory. Easy stuff.

3. Learn how the chords of the major scale are made and what they are… their names etc. C Dm Em F G Am Bdim.

Basic chord construction knowledge.

4. Learn the triad patterns for the C major scale all over the fret board.

Triads are simple 3-note chords. Easy and fun to learn and play.

5. Learn to play those triads with common chord progressions.

Learn to play and apply the triads to the most common chord progressions that fit thousands and thousands of songs.

6. Learn to do step 5 in all keys.

Once you can do steps one to five in the key of C, it’s real easy to learn it for the other 11 major keys.

Hint: It’s much easier than you think. All the patterns are exactly the same as what you learn for C major. You don’t have to learn any new patterns. Cookie cutter stuff.

It really is not hard at all. All you need is a methodical step-by-step method that makes sense and is easy and fun to use.

Sibling Rivalry: The Magic Secret That Stops It Instantly

Saturday, July 29th, 2006

It’s a familiar scene: Kids screaming at each other,
complaining that, “He got a bigger piece of pie,” or “She
got to stay up an hour later last night.”

When sibling rivalry rears its ugly head, what do you do?

Try to reason with the kids? Scream, threaten or punish
them? Ignore it and run for cover?

None of these methods is very effective for very long.

But I’ve discovered a tactic that works every time. It
really is guaranteed to end sibling battles, almost
instantaneously. The only downside is it requires a bit of
patience on your part.

The trick is understanding that it doesn’t matter what the
kids are arguing about, the real battle is for your
attention.

Really. They could be screaming at the top of their lungs
over who gets to play with a certain toy. They could be
red-faced and foaming at the mouth over who got to sit in
the favorite chair. It doesn’t matter what they’re arguing
about. What they’re really saying is, “Mom, I want more of
your attention. I want to know you love me.”

Understand this, and you’re 80 percent of the way to
resolving all sibling battles.

So here’s how to resolve the battles: Try to catch them
before the argument escalates to the point where one or both
kids need to be reprimanded.

If you can’t do that, wait for the next time. There always
is a next time, isn’t there?

Next, make it clear that you aren’t taking sides.

Now try to discern which child is feeling the need for
attention most. It will typically be the child who started
it, though that’s not always easy to figure out.

Turn to that child first and say, “Look, I can see you’re
upset. I’m wondering if maybe you need some more attention
from me. Can I give you a hug?” (Or rub your back or throw
the football around or whatever you do when you give your
kids attention.)

When that child is calm, repeat with the other child(ren).

Your goal is to let your kids know that:

1) You understand they need your attention; and

2) You accept them; and

3) You aren’t going to judge them for needing or wanting
your love.

Depending on how old the kids are and how long the rivalry
has lasted, you may hear a little sarcasm. But I promise
you, there’s a soft vulnerability underneath those barbs. If
you can ignore the sarcasm and keep offering more attention,
you’ll be amazed how quickly the arguments disappear.

Giving them attention doesn’t mean you have to be at their
beck and call for the rest of the day. It may mean you give
them hugs and kisses. It may mean sitting and talking with
them. Or it may just mean sitting quietly and playing a
game of their choice for a few minutes.

When They Both Want Your Attention at Once

It helps if you warn them that you’ll have to take turns
giving each child individual attention. I handle this in a
really straightforward way.

I just say something like, “Listen, I can see you both want
my attention now. And honestly, you both deserve it.
(That’s the best line I’ve come up with yet!)

I really want to give both of you the attention you deserve,
but I’m only human. So how about if I sit over here and
talk with you first, then I’ll play a game with you…and so
on.”

This also works really well when there’s a new baby in the
house. Obviously, if you’re in the middle of feeding,
changing or bathing the baby, you can’t give the older
one(s) the attention they want.

So just say as sympathetically as possible, “You know what?
I bet you want a hug right now, don’t you?” Or, “Could you
use some mommy time?” Or, “Does it seem to you like the
baby is getting all my attention?”

Then say, “You deserve my attention, too. And I want to
give it to you. Right now, I can’t because I have to feed
the baby. But as soon as I’m finished I’m going to…[give
you a great big hug, play Candy Land with you, etc.]

Is This Really Guaranteed to Work?

Yes, but, of course, you have to put it into practice.

I am the first to admit that when I’m tired, hungry, cranky
or PMSish (or worse, postpartumish!), I just can’t bother
with this trick. I mean, geez, even Barney would get PMS if
he were a woman (and not a make-believe character)! So
don’t expect the battles to stop instantaneously and never
arise again.

Plus, when the kids are tired and cranky, it doesn’t matter
how much attention you give them, they’re not going to
respond to anything but food and sleep. Understand that,
too.

The reason this trick is guaranteed to work because it’s
based on understanding that the root of all sibling rivalry
is a battle for your attention. Even if you do nothing
other than understand that, and accept that all kids need
attention (probably more than you have to give), you’re 80%
of the way there.

Nitro Powered RC Cars – Tips for Choosing Your First Gas RC Car

Saturday, July 29th, 2006

RC (radio controlled) cars, especially the nitro or gas powered RC cars, are becoming increasingly popular. With speeds up to 70 mph, realistic looks, and racing clubs in virtually every large city, it’s easy to see why.

If you want to join this exciting hobby, there’re a few things you should consider before you buy your first nitro-powered RC car. The basic considerations are: size, type, 2 or 4-stroke motor, maintenance, 2 or 4 wheel drive, and ready-to-run (rtr) or kit cars.

Sizes
The two most popular sizes to choose from are 1/8 and 1/10 scale. 1/10th scale is the industry standard for on-road racers, while 1/8th is more popular for off-road trucks and buggies. The larger 1/8th scale on road car comes standard with a 2 or 3 speed automatic transmission.

Types
The touring and racing cars are are the popular choice for on-road use. For best performance, they should be run on a smooth surface.

Trucks and buggies are the choice if off-road action is what you want. Though not as fast as the touring and racing styles, they are still very impressive and extremely rugged as well. And since a smooth surface is not required, they also have the advantage of being able to run just about anywhere.

Motors
Nitro powered RC motors come available in the popular 2-stroke or the less conventional 4- stroke versions. The primary difference is that the 2-stroke motor, much like a weed eater or chain saw, requires a fuel oil mixture. The 4-stroke motor has an oil reservoir and can run on straight fuel. The 2 stroke engine has the advantage of producing higher rpm’s (revs up faster) and is more suitable for racing. The 4 stroke engine has more power and torque and is better for offroad use.

The most popular 2-stroke motor is the 23cc (cubic centimeter) displacement engine. It’s popularity is due to the amazing 2.5 HP of output it produces. The resulting high speeds and acceleration are what RC racers love.

Additionally, motors come with or without a pull start. The ones without a pull start are cheaper, but you’ll also need a starter box.

Maintenance for Nitro Powered RC Cars
Maintenance is a definite requirement of running a nitro powered vehicle. Most hobbyist love tweaking and tuning their vehicles. In addition, you’ll need to maintain certain parts such as:

Clutch
Differential
Air Filter
Header and
Pull start cord

2 or 4 Wheel Drive
If you’re new to the hobby, you’ll find a 2wd car less expensive and easier to work on. The 4wd car has the advantage of better traction and handling in turns which makes it a better choice when you’re ready to race.

Kits or Ready to Run (RTR) Rc Cars
Nitro powered rc cars come in kits or ready-to-run right from the box. The primary difference is the whether you want to save time with a RTR car or save money with a kit. However, because of the assembly process, kits better prepare you for required maintenance.

If you choose to build an rc car, don’t expect to finish in one sitting. To avoid mistakes, familiarize yourself with the instructions first and get your work area prepared. Some of the things you’ll need are:

Small No. 1 and 2 Phillips and flathead screwdrivers
Soap – as a dry lubricant for tight parts
Extra fuel line – to hold screws while positioning
Needle nose and regular slip joint pliers
Flush cutter
Hobby knife with no. 11 blades

When you assemble the car, make sure to work in a well-lit, uncluttered area. You should keep the parts and tools separated using tin boxes, trays, or even an old fishing tackle box.

These are a few of the basics you’ll need to know before you buy your first nitro rc car or truck. You should expect to pay around $400 for a complete beginner setup. The price will vary a little depending on whether you choose a kit or RTR and how many tools you need.

Whether you race or just practice by yourself, get ready for a lot of fun!

Guide to choosing educational toys for children

Choosing educational toys and games for children

In the last few years, parents started getting more and more interested in choosing all sorts of educational toys for their children. Because a parent wishes the best for his child, a toy that is labeled as educational is very likely to be bought easier than others. But what is an child educational toy?

Well, there is no definition of the term “educational toy” from what I know. However, what I do know is that an educational toy is a toy that helps a child learn something good, something that will help in the future. Play is the most important activity of any child.

Learning thru play is a reality; it can and it is done unknowingly every time your child plays. The parent must however control the play so that it remains on an educational course. There are also toys that aren’t exactly educational for children . Toy guns and other such toys that somehow tend to violence and other bad behaviors are not recommended. You must avoid such toys. Although these toys may be a good source of fun for youngsters, on the long term they will only do harm.

How do child educational toys and games work?

A I said above, play is a child`s main activity. During the play, a child learns many new things. Toys and games must be integrated into the play to make their job. This is not hard, because play consists of several games that require using toys.

Any toy can be educational, as long as it does not develop a bad behavior, and it is used in your child’s play. A toy must be used in order to be educational for a child.

To be clearer about how child educational toys and games work, I will take one example: Hide and seek.

Let’s take a look at Hide and Seek. You do remember this game, right? Can you remember the rules? Ok, I will still list them here, and comment on them and explain its educational side. The first rule is that every player must obey the rules. I know, I know it’s obvious, but if players would not respect the rules, would there be any point for the rules to exist? Every child must learn and obey them, or else they are not allowed to play the game. The educational part of this is that the child learns to accept the fact that he cannot do everything he wants, that there are some limits and he must not pass them in order to keep his privileges.

One of the children in the group is chosen to count to 100 at the home tree (this helps young children learn the numbers in a pleasurable way, not like in school), without peeking (this educated the child to use fair play in all areas of the life). Meanwhile, the others must find a good hiding place, one that is both hard to discover and close to the home tree. This stimulates the child to think fast to the best solution to a given task.

After he finished counting to 100, the child says “Ready or not, here I come” and then he must search for the other players. He must be very careful. Once he finds a player hiding, he must run back to the home tree and shout his name. He must be vigilant so that he can hear any sound that might indicate the position of the other players.

The players who are already spotted must not tell where the others are hiding. This too educates children to use fair play.

The first player spotted is the next one to count to 100.

You’d never think that hide and seek, one of the most common games in childhood, could be so educational, right? Yes, it is a very educational game. And it’s not the only one. Pick any game you liked playing when you were a child, and analyze its rules, as I did above. You’ll be amazed. Hide and Seek is oriented mainly towards developing fair play and physical skills. Here’s another example of child educational game that helps developing more advanced skills: Monopoly.

I won’t bore you with its rules. This game introduces your child into the basics of modern business life. Acquiring high value properties, negotiation, taxes. Yup! This game educates your child to become the biggest businessperson on the Wall Street. Monopoly has rules that are more complex and it requires greater concentration.

Specific jargon and names that mean much to the entrepreneurs get your child closer the world of business. Toys are amongst the first objects a child gets in contact. Understanding how things work is a direct result of solving problems with toys like “Why this fits there?”, “Does that fit here?”, “How big is that?”.

Educational toys help your child learn to grab, pull, push, synchronize the movement of the head with that of the hand. Toys are indispensable when playing. Playing with a great variety of child educational toys helps your child develop his imagination, understand that different objects have different properties, and learn how to combine them to create other interesting objects.

How to Shop for Comfort in Mens Footwear

Thursday, July 27th, 2006

Fit, durability and style are the key factors to look for when purchasing mens footwear. The top criteria, however, must be comfort. No one is going to wear fashionable shoes for long if they are not also comfortable. Shoes that pinch, bind or cramp your feet can make you miserable, and can also damage your feet.

Shopping for mens shoes should always focus on fit and comfort first, and finding a fashionable, stylish brand second. Quality shoemakers know this and offer a wide range of comfortable footwear options. Brands that are merely fashionable are not going to serve you well if they don’t fit right.

Shopping for shoes that are comfortable and also look good is easier than ever. In order to get a proper fit, you should shop for shoes later in the day, when your feet are larger, and be sure that the brands you try on aren’t too tight. You should be able to wiggle your toes. You shouldn’t hold on to the old notion of foot size – your body changes, and you really should get your feet measured each time you buy shoes. Also, make sure that you get both feet measured, as sometimes one foot is larger. The shoes should fit the larger foot comfortably.

How Do They Fit?

For the most comfortable shoes, you should try them on with the same socks that you will normally wear with the shoes. Make sure you try on both shoes, and walk around the store a bit before purchasing. Buckle or lace up the shoes as you normally would during regular wear. Make sure they fit and bend in the same places that your foot bends. Don’t buy leather shoes that are too tight and expect them to stretch out and be more comfortable once they are “broken in.” They should be comfortable when you try them on and walk.

An experienced sales person in a store with a knowledgeable staff can help you find the right fit and the right styles for your needs. They will be able to steer you toward brands that offer special features for your personal fit needs, such as arch support, and proper cushioning.

How to keep your baby happy while traveling – Games

Thursday, July 27th, 2006

With the holiday season approaching a lot of parents are faced with the wonderful world of baby air travel. One of the biggest challenges faced by parents of children of all ages is keeping the kids happy and busy while traveling in the car or on an airplane. This is especially true on long haul flights or intercontinental flights. The challenges faced by parents of infants and toddlers can be even greater than those faced by parents of older children. Luckily, however, there are a number of strategies parents can use to make sure traveling with their baby is a joy and not a source of stress.

Toys and games are some of the best ways to keep babies and toddlers quiet and entertained while on the road. There are a great many toys, books and games which are designed just for traveling situations. These travel items may include things like fun and colorful pop up story books that parents can read to their babies on the plane, fun games the infant can play by his or herself, and even fun computer games the baby can enjoy.

As with any items designed for babies and young children, the best traveling toys and games will have vibrant bright colors to capture the attention of the baby, as well as interesting and fun shapes to keep them focused on the game.

Games that parents can play with their infants are a favorite among both new mothers and babies. The best games are those that can be played in several different ways, and those that are engaging enough to keep the interest of even the youngest baby even on a long car trip.

In order to ensure that the baby will continue to be entertained during the entire trip to grandma’s house, as well as on the way home, it is generally a good idea to bring along several different types of games and toys. Remember that babies and young children can often have short attention spans, and the game they loved yesterday may not interest them tomorrow. Having a good selection of games and toys is the parent’s best assurance that the infant will continue to be entertained throughout the entire trip.
