The spinal cord is the most important part of one’s body. It gives shape to our body and defines our posture. It is extremely important to keep it in good shape and it can only be achieved through regular exercise. Exercise keeps the muscle flexible and the bones strong. Small injuries and fractures can be taken care of without problems if exercise is a regular habit.
One of the most important exercises for the back bone is the bridge exercise.
This exercise movement is for our core (midsection). This will strengthen our abdominal muscles which in return will support our low back and prevent injury in this area. Every one of us has undergone low back pain or knows of someone that has suffered damage in the lower back.
The human body was not intended to sit down, but in today’s world, more and more people work on computers and sit for 18 out of 24 hours in the day. It is not astonishing that most people who do not lead an energetic lifestyle develop a weak lower back as well as weak abdominals, tight hamstrings and bad pose.
Most severe injuries we see today are due to bad posture. Since all areas of the body are linked in some way, what affects the lower body will ultimately affect the upper body, and the other way round. These two parts meet and connect at the low back and this relationship is what takes all the tension and keeps the package together.
The correct technique or method to do this exercise is we have to lie down on our stomach with our legs straight and together. The points that we need to keep in mind when we try this exercise is that we should not let our hips sag too low. This will put pointless strain on the low back. We should not push our hips up too far. This will transfer too much of our weight onto our shoulders. We need to be sure that we don’t hold our breath. Breathe out of the stomach while contracting the abdominal muscles as hard as we can.
If this movement causes pain in our back while performing it we should stop it. We might not be strong enough for this yet. We should strengthen up our abdominal muscles by doing alternative abdominal exercises. We should try this periodically until we feel comfortable doing it pain free. People suffering from shoulder and low back problems should be cautious while performing this exercise. We should keep in mind to set an achievable goal and have fun seeing our self improve and getting stronger.

Top 10 tips to burn more calories during your normal day
Wouldn’t it be great if we could burn more calories without exercising, eating less, or changing our daily routine? (If I read ‘get off the bus a stop early’ anywhere else I will scream!)
The tips below will enable us to do just that. Okay, it’s not going to be a huge amount, you won’t lose 5lb in a week following these, but it all adds up, and if we burn a few extra calories everyday we can have a treat at the weekend. Mine is usually a glass of wine……yours could be chocolate, cake, or you could be very virtuous and just lose an extra lb or 2 over a few weeks.
- FIDGET. Tap your feet, jiggle your leg, gesticulate when you talk, drum your fingers and wiggle your toes. Apparently fidgeting can burn an extra 350 calories a day. That is a lot!!
- SIT UP STRAIGHT. When we sit up straight, we use more muscles around the core area – stomach and lower back. This uses more calories in itself and as muscles become stronger we burn more calories when doing nothing!
- DRINK COLD WATER. When we drink cold things our bodies use calories to warm them up. And water is really good for us in loads of other ways too.
- LAUGH. Laughing uses lots of muscles, so as well as feeling good we are burning calories.
- PUT THE SHOWER ON COLD FOR A FEW SECONDS. Not so nice this one but a blast for a few seconds of cold water burns calories as we warm up.
- EAT CHILLI. Or other spicy foods as they cause our metabolism to speed up
- SING. Loudly, when you are cleaning, cooking, sitting in the car. Just make sure the windows are shut if you are tone deaf like me!
- DO 10 SQUATS WHEN CLEANING YOUR TEETH. Easy enough but cleaning teeth twice a day = 20 squats a day = toned bum and legs in no time!
- KISS. Much nicer, kissing burns calories, yey!
- GET OFF THE BUS A STOP EARLY. Only joking, but do try and be more active and stand whenever you can, so when your on the phone, ironing, doing your make up etc, get up. You use about an extra 40 calories standing instead of sitting.
So there you have it, 10 easy ways to burn a few extra calories without going to the gym, or even breaking a sweat!

Essential oils are the oils obtained from plants by various methods, such as distillation. They are called essential oils because it carries a distinctive scent, or essence, of the plant. The use of essential oils has a history dating back at least a thousand years and has been used for medicinal uses, skin care and aromatherapy.
If you are fortunate enough to have an herb and/or flower garden, or have access to fresh cut herbs and flowers, you can make your own essential oils quite easily. Sweet almond oil with Vitamin E will be the base of all your essential oils. Vitamin E will act as a natural preservative. You essential oils will last 6 to 12 months if kept in a dark, dry, and cool place. Remember to sterilize your containers and start with clean utensils.
Ingredients: Day 1, Repeat for days 2 through 4
1/2 Cup Sweet Almond Oil
couple of drops of vitamin E
1 Cup packed fresh herbs OR 1/4 cup chopped fruit peel, such as orange, grapefruit, lime, lemon, etc. or 1cup freshly cut flowers. Rinse herbs, fruit or flower petals thoroughly.
Day 1
Every day for four days place 1 cup of flowers or 1/4 cup herbs or chopped fruit peel in the plastic bag.
Close the bag securely and lightly tap the materials in the bag. Do not beat them to a pulp, as this is a gentle process.
Add the sweet almond oil and the flowers, herbs or citrus peel into one wide mouth glass jar. Close and shake gently to distribute the almond oil thoroughly. Place bottle in warm place.
Day 2:
Transfer the materials in the jar into a cheesecloth or gauze and strain the oil into the second glass jar. Squeeze as much as possible to extract all the oils. Discard material.
Day 3, Repeat Day 1
Day 4, Repeat Day 2
On the 4th day, when all oils have been extracted into jar 2, strain the oil one last time. Pour into pretty bottle
Below are some fun recipes.
Scented Rocks (A Nice Alternative to Potpourri)
1/2 cup plain flour
1/2 cup salt
1/4 tsp. essential oil in your favorite scent
2/3 cups boiling water
Food coloring, if desired
In bowl, mix dry ingredients well. Add essential oil and boiling water to dry ingredients. (Scent will be strong, but will fade slightly when dry.) For colored stones, blend in food coloring, one drop at a time, until desired shade is reached. Blend ingredients and form balls. Allow stones to dry. Place rocks in a bowl or dish to scent a room.
Oriental Nights Perfume
4 drops sandalwood
4 drops musk
3 drops frankincense
2 tsp. jojoba oil
Mix all the ingredients together and shake well. Allow perfume to settle for at least 12 hours. Store in a cool dry place.
LUSCIOUS BODY POLISHER
2 C. plain yogurt
1 T. wheat germ
1 T. honey
1 T. almond oil
Omit almond oil if skin is acne-prone.
Mix all ingredients. Dampen skin in shower and massage mixture all over. Rinse with warm water. Rinse immediately with cold water to boost circulation.
Lemony Lavender Toner
3 drops lemon oil
3 drops lavender oil
3 teaspoons of distilled water
Use a soft cotton ball to massage mixture into the skin after cleansing. Follow with a moisturizer if desired
