Hope For Allergy Sufferers

Saturday, March 1st, 2008

Allergy season just keeps coming. For those who suffer from allergies, it can be a miserable time of year. Itchy, watery eyes, stuffed AND runny nose, sneezing, all of it seeming to go on forever.

Some people deal with allergies year round, as I did, because they’re allergic to more than just trees and plants. Anyone who has cat allergies knows to keep your distance, and if you happen to play with one you wash immediately and hope for minimal consequences. Ever have a cat scratch you and it swells and itches? Yep, I have.

All my life I suffered with allergies. You name it, I was allergic to it from pets to plants to foods. I was tested and got shots as a child and didn’t know what it was like to breath through my nose. Spring was a miserable time of year for me until a few years ago when I found Symmetry Direct and began taking their Protection 4 Life with New Attitude.

After being on the products for a couple months I realized one day when I was st my friends house, who had 4 cats, I was not getting the itchy watery eyes and my nose was not running. Two months later it was spring and I was able to breath! (I live in one of the Top 100 Worst Cities For Allergies) Since then, with regular use of the products, spring is a wonderful time of year and I am not affected by allergies.

I don’t know if it will work for you, all I know is it worked for me and it changed my life as a result, and I CAN BREATH!

Sara J. Banks has lived in a high allergy area. She suffered with allergies for years.

Lamiaceae

Common Trade Names

Tonka Bean

Common Forms

Tonka bean is difficult to obtain commercially; availability is rare.

Source

Active components are extracted from the fruits and seeds of Dipteryx odorata, a tree that is native to South America, specifically Brazil and Venezuela. The tonka bean tree belongs to the legume family.

Chemical Components

The primary chemical components of tonka bean are coumarin, dihydrocoumarin, and o-coumaric acid. Other components include melilotic acid, methyl melilotate, ethyl melilotate, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural, fat, and starch.

Actions

Coumarin is metabolized within the body to 7-hydroxycoumarin, which then undergoes glucuronidation in the intestines and liver; this extensive first-pass metabolism results in a low absolute bioavailability of coumarin. Both coumarin and 7-hydroxycoumarin have inhibited growth of selected types of malignant human cell lines in vitro. The glucuronide metabolite of 7 -hydroxycoumarin appears to be inactive .

Reported Uses

Tonka bean is claimed to relieve abdominal cramps and nausea; the fruit is also thought to act as an aphrodisiac. It is known as a folk remedy for whooping cough as well. Coumarin has long been used as a flavoring agent in foods and a scent in pharmaceutical products. It has shown therapeutic benefit against lymphedema in clinical trials.

Dosage

The usual dose used is 60 mg of coumarin P.O. daily. (Some studies have based doses on the coumarin content of the product.)

Adverse Reactions

CV: potential cardiac effects (with large doses).

Hepatic: hepatotoxicity.

Interactions

Anticoagulants: May cause excessive bleeding. Avoid administration with tonka bean.

Drugs that cause hepatotoxicity: Risk of additive toxicity. Avoid administration with tonka bean.

Contraindications and Precautions

Tonka bean is contraindicated in patients with underlying hepatic dysfunction because of the potential for toxicity. Avoid its use in pregnant or breast-feeding patients; effects are unknown.

Special Considerations

Inform the patient that tonka bean is on the FDA’s list of unsafe herbs.

Advise the patient to consult a health care provider before using herbal preparations because a treatment that has been clinically researched and proved effective may be available.

Monitor liver function test results.

Advise women to avoid using tonka bean during pregnancy or when breast-feeding.

Points of Interest

Do not confuse this herb with the synthetic anticoagulant bishydroxycoumarin.

Extracts of tonka bean have been used as a flavoring for castor oil preparations.

Commentary

Several tonka bean components, especialIy coumarin and 7-hydroxycoumarin, show promise as future therapeutic agents. Because efficacy and safety data are lacking, the herb cannot be recommended for any medicinal use.

Friday, February 29th, 2008

Benefits

Forcibly gets rid of stale air and toxins in the bottom of the lungs

Focus Keep your chest as low to the ground as you can for as long as you can before arching your body. Hiss as loudly as you can for maximum benefit. Once in the extended forward position with your arms locked, keep lengthening and stretching through your abdominal muscles as you hiss.

Sit on your heels on the floor. Lean forward and stretch your arms out in front of you, palms flat on the floor. Inhale.

Exhaling strongly through your mouth (making a hissing sound), slide your chin and chest forward along the floor. Keep your hips low.

Push up with your arms, and support your body on locked elbows; drop your head backward, arch your back, and stretch through your abdomen. Continue hissing until you empty your lungs completely.

When you run out of breath, inhale while you sit back on your heels, arms extended in front of you, palms flat on the floor.

Repeat Hissing Cobra 6 more times, hissing as you slide forward and inhaling as you sit back on your heels. Do not take any extra breaths in between.

Sit back on your heels with your arms outstretched and your head on the floor. Rest, and notice how clean your lungs feel.

Star Stretch- Improves Circulation to the Abdominal Area

Lie on the floor on your back with your arms and legs spread wide, palms facing up your body should resemble the shape of a starfish.

Inhale deeply, then exhale. Hold your breath for 7 counts as you stretch and lengthen through your arms, pressing the backs of your hands into the floor. Leave your legs soft.

A Real Life Heart Healthy Fairy Tale

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

Thanks to our all-knowing nanny state I need to say up front that I’m not a doctor and that this article in no way makes any medical claims. In fact, all I’m going to do is tell a fairy tale. If my story inspires you to take action please confer with your “healthcare professional” first. Although establishment doctors typically don’t know squat about nutrition, to CYA/CMA I must tell you to consult your doctor before doing anything that may be suggested below. There… now for my story:

Once upon a time long, long ago in a far off land… actually it was 2005 in Shreveport, Louisiana. Bob, my business partner from 1999 suffered a massive heart attack in his doctor’s office. Happily, Bob didn’t die but over a year later he is still suffering from the effects.

Bob looks healthy as a horse and is only 54-years old but he has a family history of heart disease. His Daddy died of a heart attack as did his uncle. Since the “episode” in his doctor’s office, Bob has diligently sought ways to improve his heart health and hopefully reverse his heart disease. He has changed his diet, exercises regularly and takes supplements that promise to improve his overall health. To keep his blood test “numbers” within normal limits - much to his chagrin - he must take several medications. Bob hates drugs and their side effects which he believes are often worse than the symptoms that they are masking.

Six weeks ago a friend told me about a liquid vitamin/mineral/amino acid supplement for the heart that promises to provide all the key nutrients for a healthy cardiovascular system. The main ingredient in this concoction is an amino acid called L-arginine whose heart healthy benefits are supported by Nobel Prize research and 75,000+ medical papers validating the science. This Nobel research discovered the link between nitric oxide and cardiovascular health. Nitric oxide significantly increases blood flow, makes the blood vessels more flexible and gently dissolves plaque. L-arginine is a precursor in the cardiovascular system for the production of nitric oxide.

I told Bob about this “stuff” and he was eager to give it a try because of his aversion to drugs and his desire to get off as many as possible. He has diligently charted his blood pressure for months in his quest to stay on top of his delicate condition. Last month his BP daily average was a satisfactory 125/82. Boldly, Bob (without consulting with his doctor… a BIG no-no! REMEMBER?) stopped his blood pressure medication and doubled his daily dose of this heart healthy swill. The first week off his blood pressure medicine, Bob’s BP averaged that of a world class athlete, 100/62.

My fairy tale moves to Tulsa, Oklahoma and the characters change. A 75-year-old lady friend of mine is essentially an invalid and home bound because of her serious breathing problems. Her condition is so severe that she must use one of those powerful inhalers every four hours to avoid gasping for breath. Initially she was skeptical and reluctant to try this liquid supplement but after a week of coaxing by her husband she relented. Within two weeks she was down to only two treatments per day. Remember, increased blood flow also increases oxygen delivery to the entire body which was the reason for her success.

One of the first success stories that I heard when I discovered “Cardio Cocktail” was told by a gentleman in Arkansas. At 42 he was diagnosed as needing 4 stints in his heart due to blockage. He scheduled the procedure 70 days hence and in the interim he took 4 times the normal serving of the product which because of the natural ingredients is perfectly safe. Following the scheduled procedure two months later, his doctor reported that he found no blockage and it had been unnecessary to put any stints in his heart. Amazing.

Cardio Cocktail is a revolutionary heart healthy product which promises to reverse heart disease. Oh, did I mention that it has also cured Bob’s and my erectile dysfunction? Increased blood flow does all kinds of wonderful things for your body and for your little friends.

… And everyone lived happily ever after. Here endth my fairy tale.

Davis Mauldin is part of the 1946 tidal wave of baby boomers. He is happily married and lives in rural middle Tennessee where he and his wife are building their retirement home.
