Valuable Brand Survey of MBT – The Anti-Footwear Outfit

Thursday, November 5th, 2009

MBT Footwear sells themselves as the “anti-shoe” manufacturer. With their rounded soles and innovative design philosophy, they’ve quickly grown into a major brand with a massive and fervent fan base.

But, do these shoes really live up the hype? Are they as comfortable as everyone says? More importantly, are they worth the high price? For the answers to these questions and more, keep reading for a high level review of MBT shoes.

Price Point

MBT Footwear is expensive. For a standard shoe, expect to pay well above $200. For some, this kind of pricing for a standard sneaker or basic, casual shoe is simply too high a price to pay. For fans of the brand, though, it’s par for the course.

The Comfort and Fit of MBT Shoes

The main idea behind MBT shoes is that they’re designed for the entire body. Essentially, these shoes have an almost rounded sole, which supposedly improves both your posture and your gait. According to MBT, the design reduces impact on your knees, relieves back pain, and can even help firm up gluteal and leg muscles when you walk.

Unfortunately, this shoe is definitely not for everyone. Many first-time wearers complain that it is awkward and makes walking hard to keep their balance. Each step is an exercise in control as you have to almost learn to walk again. For some, it’s an instant fit, but for others – a nightmare.

Personally, MBT shoes aren’t for me. Overall, I found the shoes to be uncomfortable and actually somewhat unsettling. I tried the shoes for 4 days and was still unable to get into a rhythm or comfortable walk. In short, this is a shoe that you really have to try before you commit to it.

MBT Brand Quality

For $250 per pair, MBT shoes should be some of the best made sneakers in the world. Fortunately, they are. The company has insisted on reinforced stitching, high-end materials and good design. These shoes can withstand constant daily use and are very durable. They’re also washable.

MBT Style and Design

You’ll definitely get noticed wearing an MBT shoe – the rounded sole attracts attention and certainly looks different. Whether or not the unique style appeals to you is usually a question of personal preference.

Most of their styles are sneaker-based or casual shoes designed to be worn under pants. MBT’s aren’t really a shoe for a night out on the town.

The Final Word on MBT

Personally, MBT Footwear isn’t for me – the fit was wrong and the imposed rolling gait was uncomfortable and awkward. But, for a brand that’s quickly attracted thousands of die-hard fans, it’s hard to knock it. Basically, try before you buy and see whether you love it or hate it.

Relinquish the Plaques – Creative Retirement Rewards are In Style

Monday, October 5th, 2009

Gone are the days when long-serving employees look forward to getting their retirement plaques and handshakes, then walking away. Today, people want a retirement gift that’s practical, usable and represents their decades of service.

So, get out of the rut of handing out boring, old retirement plaques and serving trays. Instead, choose gifts that will not only be memorable, but also used for years to come. For some great retirement gift ideas, keep reading.

The Traditional Retirement Watch

While a watch isn’t the most original idea for a retirement gift, it’s one that will be appreciated and used for years. A high-quality watch tells an employee that you truly appreciate all their years of service and dedication. It’s also a practical gift.

Remember, when giving a watch as a retirement gift, it’s critical that you don’t choose something too inexpensive. Nothing communicates lack of gratitude like a watch that stops ticking after a few weeks.

The “Experience” Gift

Instead of loading up potentially mobile retirees with gifts and presents that will only clutter their lives, more and more employers are opting for the “experience gift.”

A trip to Europe, a cruise down the Amazon, a weekend spent learning how to skydive, a white water rafting adventure, an incredible night at a beautiful restaurant, an unforgettable spa retreat – these are all great retirement gifts. They also minimize the waste caused by producing, wrapping and shipping hundreds of thousands of plaques that will inevitably wind up in a landfill.

A Golf Club Membership

For many retirees, golf is a beloved activity that fills their days. If you know a long-time employee loves to golf, an annual membership to a nearby club is a great means of expressing your thanks and keep them living an active lifestyle.

the Gifts You Should Avoid

As you search for a retirement present, remember that there are a few gifts that should be avoided at all costs. These include anything and everything that is branded with the company logo. They may love working for you, but staring at a wall clock emblazoned with their former work logo isn’t everyone’s idea of an ideal retirement present.

Next, you should avoid giving any gift that’s tied to the work environment. That means desk clocks are out, fancy pens are out, pocket protectors are out and really anything related to work at all should be rejected as an idea. You’re celebrating this person’s next chapter in life, not chaining their memories to their current one.

Last but not least, avoid high cost gifts or discuss them with the employee beforehand. The IRS has restrictions in place that will actually tax certain presents above a certain monetary value, counting them as “bonuses” rather than gifts. And though retirement plaques may be awful, at least they’ll never be taxed.

Matching Evening Gowns with the Most Dazzling and Finest Pearl Jewelry

Friday, September 25th, 2009

As a special occasion draws close, you may begin to worry about what to wear. Even after picking on your ideal prom dress, you probably still have to worry about finding the perfect jewelry match for your ideal dress.

Hey, we are talking about evening gowns here. So I know it’s a special occasion for you, which is important and really means something to you. Let me guess. It’s a prom? Classmates reunion? Going together in the church? Or a company new year party? Doesn’t matter. The most important is that you want to look nice and elegant. Diamond is always an option, dazzling and luxury. But when it comes to a diamond jewelry piece that catches others’ eyes dozens feets away, not everyone can afford it.

In this case, pearls jewelry are just as luxury and eye catching, yet they are only a fraction of the cost of a diamond alternative. Fine natural pearls are charmingly shining, with dazzling lusters. Top grade pearls can be over 13mm big in diameter, with great luster, and free of blemishes on the surface, making them perfect for fine jewelry.

There are quite a few factors that together decide the value of a pearl: luster, thickness of the luster, cleanness of the surface, and size. The bigger the pearl, the more valuable it is. Also, the shape of the pearl matters as well. High quality pearls are perfectly round. Pearls with almost perfect surfaces are hard to find and thus valuable. A perfect surface is extremely smooth, you can actually use it as a mirror! A real fine and top quality pearl has very thick shine surface as well.

There are natural pearls and naturally cultured pearls. Cultured pearls are alternatives to natural pearls. Actually wild natural pearls has only less than 0.5% market share today. Cultured pearls, which are actually naturally planted in the waters, may look just as beautiful as natural pearls, and they are more affordable. Cultured here means that the pearls are produced with human intervention. They are usually produced in pearl oyster farms that are found in China or Japan.

China produces the most pearls of the world, accounting about 80% of the world’s harvest. Japan comes the next. Pearls from China are much less expensive than Japanese pearls. Note however, they are cheaper not because they are of lower quality, instead, it’s because its larger quantity. Also China has much lower labor cost. In addition, they focus on wholesale and the pearls are not that selectively picked. I personaly actually prefer China pearls. If you spend the same amount of money, you actually get better quality, or size, or both from Chinese pearl farmers.

Pearls can come in many different shapes, sizes, and colors. A dye can be applied to cultured pearls to achieve the desired colors. Colors can be white, black, gold, silver, cream, and so on. And because they are available in many different sizes, they can fit into almost any type of chain or ring to become a piece of pearl jewelry. Hence, you will be able to find pearl necklaces, pearl bracelets, pearl ear rings, and almost any kind of jewelry you can think of.

Pearl jewelry is, in my opinion, the only jewelry that will allow you to look elegant and gracious without attracting too much unwanted attention. There is this innocent quality in pearls that you can’t find in any other type of precious stones. So the next time you are looking for something that goes with your evening gown, pay some attention to pearl jewelry. A fine pearl piece is almost a must in every woman’s jewelry box. And a necklace beaded with top quality, lusterous pearls is definitely a perfect match for formal dresses for any special occasion.

Animal-Friendly Products – Let What You Buy Show You Care for the World!

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009

Unfortunately products made from animals have been in use for generations; however the effects on our planet can be disastrous. It has been scientifically proven that the delicate balance of the ecosystem can get a hit by certain animals being rampantly killed for whatever the reason. An example is an old investigation into the practice of killing snakes in Bali. According to zoologist, Ron Lilley, of the Indonesian Nature Foundation, the decrease in the snake population resulted in an increase in the rats in the area further resulting in vegetation being destroyed. The reason for this is that the rats were being eaten by the snakes keeping their population within tolerable limits. Snakes are often killed for their skins. There are some prized products made from snakeskin such as belts, handbags, jackets, and even shoes that are in demand across the world.

You may wonder what connection this story has on animal-friendliness. Well, when clothes, household items, and other products are being manufactured with the killing of animals, such scenes as depicted above are replicated across the globe. Therefore, it is up to us to do all we can for the cause of animal species preservation. One of the best ways to show your support for protecting the animals of our planet is to use products that are certified to be animal-friendly. This implies that no animals have been killed or harmed during the manufacture of the products. And there are a number of fabulous products available that are completely animal-friendly.

This world would be a better place if all our clothes were made of natural materials that were not derived from animals – Cotton, polyester, and maybe even wool (as long as the sheep were not hurt in the process of the wool being collected). Soft on the skin and comfortable to wear, shirts, jackets, skirts, organic t-shirts, and other animal-friendly clothes have a stylish look too.

It is time we adopted this pro-animal way of thinking. There are some classy bags and totes available made from hand-woven raffia and seagrass. No need to opt for all those leather products. And while you are at it, do the same with your jewelry and ornaments. Get a hold of some quartz bracelets, earrings, and necklaces. Don’t go in for those that are made of teeth or bones.

Let’s take the animal-friendly philosophy beyond the articles you wear on your person to your household. Something like a runner with a hand block batik print would add a touch of color to the center table. Made by hand by skilled artisans in various parts of the world, the quality of these products represents the painstaking efforts used to get these products made. Purchasing these products would give one the satisfaction of helping develop the talents of these ingenious village artisans across the world, for example in Zimbabwe, Thailand, Burma, and many other places.

Let’s have an animal-friendly accessory on your pet too with a dog collar made of something safe like hemp webbing. Hemp is known to be hypo-allergenic and anti-bacterial, besides being strong too. Refrain from using cosmetics that involve animal-testing in their manufacture. For example, use Organic body oils or mineral cosmetics instead.

WorldofGood.com by eBay has a range of animal-friendly products to suit all tastes. Use animal-friendly products and let Mother Nature thank you.

Simon Cruz is an environmental activist and a professional freelancer who regularly contributes articles enlightening people on the benefits of using products that are animal-friendly. You can find more information about animal-friendly products on WorldofGood.com by eBay

Helpful Analysis of Sketchers Variety Shoes

Friday, July 10th, 2009

Shetchers shoes are a popular youth brand known for their casual style, youth-marketed patterns and bright colors. But, is that pair of $50 shoes actually going to last until your child outgrows them?

Would you be better off buying something cheaper? Do kids actually like them? For the answers to these questions and more, keep reading for an insightful review of Sketchers brand shoes.

Sketchers’ Price Point

For Sketchers shoes, you can expect to pay anywhere from $25 to $95, depending on the style of the footwear. However, the average price for a pair of Sketchers usually hovers around $50. They’re not the most expensive kid’s shoe sold, but they’re definitely a little more costly than other department store brands.

Comfort Level of Sketchers

Sketchers makes casual running shoes for tweens and teenagers. These shoes are made to be comfortable, but they’re definitely not orthotics. Overall, they offer good support, and most kids like the thicker sole. The fit is somewhat narrow and generally not suited for wider feet.

So, if you’re looking for a wider shoe, you may need to look at another brand with a broader range of fits and sizes.

Quality and Make

Sketchers are made for kids, and they’re also made to be worn into the ground. These shoes hold up well and will usually last until your child outgrows them or at least through to the end of the school year.

To maintain your purchase, start by waterproofing them and spraying each with shoe protector before they ever go out the door. Keep them clean with monthly washings, and replace the shoelaces every few months. Remember, insoles and laces can be replaced, but once the soles wear down – it’s time for a new pair of shoes.

Style and Design of Sketchers

Sketchers are all about the youth market. Their primary consumer is the younger buyer – the girl who wants pink camouflage sneakers or the boy who goes after a striped skateboarding style. And though the company may put out more mature styles, they’re not age-appropriate for adults.

The company has tried to design a line of dressier shoes or footwear that is more appropriate for the work place, but they’ve still hung onto their sporty or younger style – whether it’s too clunky heels, too many stripes or design touches, or just too much – they’ve failed. Again, these are great shoes for young women and young adults, but they have no place in the professional work environment.

Conclusion

Sketchers shoes are reasonably priced when compared to other brand-name sneakers, and the style is popular with kids. For quality, you’ll find they normally last at least until your kids outgrow them.

People receiving gifts will easily notice whether the present is carefully thought out or you just pluck it out from the store shelf in a hurry. So to avoid disappointing the newly-wed couple, you need to carefully choose the best wedding gift for them.

Start with the Registry

Normally, if you received a wedding invitation, you can find a wedding gift registry attached on the envelope. The items listed there are the ones preferred by the couple. Some registries also provide the name of department stores where the gifts can be purchased.

So, start with the registry and see what gifts the bride and groom really want on their wedding day. By making the wedding registry as your guide, you will be spared from thinking what gift to give for the couple.

Try to Innovate and be Creative with Gifts

There are instances when the items listed on the registry will not be available on the couple’s chosen department store. If this is the case, try to look for related items that you think will be very useful for the newly-wed couple.

It is also advisable to find the item in other department stores. Although this is not the preferred store of the couple, the gift will still be useful for them.

You can also deviate from the wedding registry list and look for wedding gifts that match the temperament and characteristics of the couple. This is possible if you are personally close and know the couple very well.

You can also make your gift very unique. One way to do this is to buy novelty wedding gifts from gift specialty stores. There are lots of items in those kinds of stores you will never run out of gift ideas for your friends.

Buying Gifts for Acquaintances

If the bride or groom is not a close friend, then it is best to be on the safe side and buy traditional wedding gifts. Be careful though when buying too generic gifts because other guests might have already thought about it.

If you can afford big wedding gift items, then you can choose handy household appliances that can be used everyday. In this way, your gift will not collect dust in boxes of stowed away items. The couple will be highly appreciative if your gift can help them in their everyday chores.

Giving wedding gifts sometimes is very difficult. You need to consider lots of things and determine if you can afford the gift. So the next time you are invited to a wedding, shop for gifts way ahead of the occasion. In this way, you can choose carefully which wedding gift would be best for the couple.

Google’s Hopes in Android Platform Tie Into a Bright Future for Smartphone Users

Sunday, December 7th, 2008

Ten years from now things will be very different when we walk into a store to buy a new phone. At least that’s what the Open Handset Alliance group (which includes Google) is hoping for.

First, we won’t be walking into a store for a specific device that will perform functions x, y, and z. The hope is that all phones by then will have a standardized OS that will truly have a universal look and feel and be as easy to use as 1-2-3 for the consumer.

There will be none of this carrier-envy and my BlackBerry can do this and your iPhone can’t do that. It’s going to be all standardized, all open source, and all easy to use.

Sounds too good to be true? Yes, in some ways it does. I also have to wonder how the actual handset manufacturers feel about this. It can’t make them (and their shareholders) too happy to know that people won’t necessarily care that much whether they’re getting an Apple or an HTC device.

It can’t make the wireless carriers ecstatic either. It’s hard enough to figure out what’s the main difference between them other than their network capabilities. So, the Open Handset Alliance has good ideas for all us but where does that leave the wireless and smartphone industry?

Green is the new black

Saturday, November 1st, 2008

“The color green has always been seen as the color for progress  and fertility and also as a sign for money. Black has been for long and even to an extent
now is considered to be the sexy color to wear. Well there is competition for black and that is green and it can be safely said that green is clearly gaining
a lot of points and fans. The “Green is the new black” T-Shirt has been making waves in the fashion circle due to its uniqueness. The statement has certainly
come of age with all kinds of people adopting it.

So what has brought about this change?

The concept of course was of course was a stroke of genius by some master mind, but mostly it has got to do with many people becoming more environment
conscious and more importantly being more responsible about the environment. Everyone is going on and on about how they can save the pretty flowers, mighty
tress and sexy beaches. So, what can they possibly do? Well almost nothing because in the end, time catches up and they are all caught up with their own
work. This is where the “Green is the new black” T-Shirt comes in. This T-Shirt is more of a way for people to make a statement and show that they do care
even if they can’t do much to help. Moral support you see.

The fact is that is more than the color green it’s the statement that has caught on. T- Shirts with this statement can be seen on tees of various other
colors. The essence of the statement many say is that it actually says that there is nothing cooler than nature and serving nature.

There is no doubt that in the end it’s a T-Shirt that roots for social concern and has changed the way a lot of people approach things. The T-Shirt has
proved that some things packaged in the right way can make a big difference to how people think. So its time people start doing contribute something for
nature and if they can’t at least wear the T-Shirt and show that they do care in a way. ”

So “Green is the new black” it is…

Tamil Historic Novels

Sunday, September 21st, 2008

The novel form of Tamil literature has been in existence only since around two centuries.

Before that, the poetry form used to rule the roost for nearly two thousand years. Novel is a relatively new genre in Tamil literature but is very popular among the Tamil novel readers. The novel format was made popular by legendary writers like Kalki Krishnamurthy, Vai. Mu. Kothainayaki, Lakshmi, Na. Parthasarathy etc.  The novel form has given us several others.   The historic novels by Kalki, Akilan, Sandilyan and Na. Parthasarathy were enjoyed by the Tamil readers for their skillful depiction of the historic, social and cultural aspects of the bygone era.  These novels are no less than priceless treasures for the Tamil people of even successive generations. Here is a bird’s eye view of some of the famous historic novels.

Historical novels by Kalki

‘Ponniyin Selvan’ is a novel set in the Chola period and brings out the social and political situation that prevailed during that era.   The imaginary characters and events blend well into the historic events.  He could even blend humour and satire into the actual events. His description of the kings and the wars they fought and their aspirations and dreams for their country and people.  The stories were full of twists and turns that captured the imagination of the reading public.  ‘Sivagamiyin Sabhatham’ is his masterpiece, romantic novel set in the Pallava dynasty’s reign over south India. ‘Parthiban Kanavu’ is the story of Chola prince Vikkiraman who fulfills the dream of his father Parthiban, the Chola king to re-establish the Chola kingdom and freeing it from the Pallava ruler Narasimha Varma Pallavan.

Akilan

Akilan’s ‘Kayalvizhi’ is a gripping saga set in the Pandiya kingdom background.  His other novels include ‘Vengayin Maindhan’, ‘Kanni Maadam’ and ‘Vettri Thirunagar.’ ‘Vengayin Mainthan’ has won the Sahitya Academy Award in 1963. ‘Vettri Thirunagar’ depicts the life of Viswanatha Nayaka of Vijaya Nagar who was the founder of the Nayakas. He played a major role in integrating the country.

Na Parthasarathy

Popularly known as ‘Deepam’ Parthasarathy, after the name of the Tamil magazine he edited, his novels ‘Paandimaa Devi’, ‘Rani Mangammal’ and ‘Manipallavam’ are very popular. Paandimaa Devi depicts the glorious Tamil culture and philosophy. The novel is a story of the Pandian ruler the third Rasa Simma Pandiyan.

Vikkiraman

‘Vanthiyathevan Vaal’ by Vikkiraman is a novel set in Raja Raja Chola period. He has penned some interesting novels like ‘Kulothungan Kanavu’, ‘Raja Rajan Sabhatham’, ‘Aalavai Arasi’ and ‘Vathapi Vijayam’ which are very popular.

Kovi Manisekaran

‘Kollippaavai’, ‘Naaga Nandhini’, ‘Vengai Vanam’, ‘Sera Sooriyan’ and ‘Ilavarasi Mohanangi’ are famous novels by Kovi. Manisekaran serialized in Tamil Magazines.

Ra Ki Rangarajan

‘Naan Krishnadevarayan’ by Ra. Ki. Rangarajan is a story woven around Vijayanagaram and as seen by the king Krishnadeva Rayan.

Sandilyan

His novels are historic romance with lots of adventure laced into them.  Most of them are set in the times of the Chola kingdom.  His novels also describe the political situations prevailing in south India and the conflict with the other countries across the seas. ‘Yavana Rani’ is about a Greek Princess who is saved by Ilanchezhiyan, from the Chola Empire.  ‘Kadal Pura’ is another novel about the army commander of Chola king Rajendra II and the princess of Sumatra.

Tamil readers could read most of the historical novels serialized in Tamil weekly magazines. They were published as books later on.

The Great Tamil Poet – Subramanya Bharathiar

His lofty dreams about our society and the country came out brilliantly in his songs and prose. He had the uncanny ability of using his literary skills to the best to kindle the patriotic feelings of the masses and about the evils of the society which caused all their problems.

Patriot

He proudly proclaims that the there is no other country in the world can equal the greatness of India which has the Himalyan mountains, the sacred river Ganges and the Upanishads in his song “Mannum Imaya malai’ and ‘paarukkule nalla naadu’. He is equally proud about the Richness and sweetness of the Tamil language in his lines ‘yamarindha mozhiugalile’. He proclaims with equal pride the richness and uniqueness of the Tamil language.

Advocating Freedom and Casteless society

He fearlessly wrote about freedom for individuals as wells as nations being influenced by ‘Vande Mataram’ the patriotic song by Bankim Chandra. These meetings have injected fearlessness into his writing. Considering this to be a divine inspiration he went on to write revolutionary compositions that were packed with national unity and the spirit of freedom His songs brought a spiritual dimension to the freedom movement. ‘Swathesa Geethangal’ and ‘Janma Bhoomi’ which he dedicated to sister Nivedita are examples of his patriotic songs and serving the underprivileged and emancipation of women. They were distributed to the people during the freedom movement of India. His dreams of a free India and a society that is educated, devoid of its social evils and living in harmony. We can see that many of his dreams have come true today. His writings when he was in exile in Puduchery were so powerful that the British even jailed him.

His songs for the children in ‘Paappa Paattu’ and ‘Pudhiya Aathichoodi’ evoked a sense of equality, love towards all living beings, casteless society and courage etc. His simple words convey the ethical and moral principles to the young minds effortlessly. His unique style was simple with a technique of weaving the spoken language and rhythm into beautiful prose and poetry.

The literary genius Bharati has made an indelible mark in the minds of crores of Tamil people through his writings that included novels, short stories, essays and poetry.

Kalki – The Legendary Tamil Novelist

Sunday, September 21st, 2008

The mere mention of the name ‘Kalki’ is enough to send most the Tamil readers of yesteryears into a journey of nostalgia.  Kalki is a name that sparks off memories of kingdoms and the saga of war, patriotism, love and loyalty that go into the making and perishing of those kingdoms in the Chola dynasty period in South India.

Those who have read the novels by Kalki would instantly go into a nostalgic voyage of the scenes as depicted by Kalki at the very mention of his name.  I am one of those who had a chance to read a few of his novels.  I love his unique way of making us envision the events in our minds.

The beauty of nature and the fertile and colourful countryside, the thoughts running in the strategic minds, the expression of emotions and feelings running through the characters are brought out in clear detail. The vivid descriptions of every scene whether it is the preparation for war or a meeting between the two people in love, their conversations, the place and atmosphere and everything is so well crafted in his words.  The inimitable style and the deft handling of situations and characters in his novels leave us wonderstruck about this rare ability.

For many decades Kalki’s novels were the craze of Tamil readers about half a century ago. To name a few Kalki’s masterpieces were serialized in the Tamil magazines Ananda Vikatan and later on in Kalki.

My favorite is Kalki’s ‘Parthiban Kanavu’ which was later made as a good movie. This is the story of how Chola King Parthiban’s dream of re-establish the Chola kingdom which was in the clutches of Pallava king Narasimhavarman.  Parthiban expresses his dream to his son Vikraman who was very young and later gets killed. A monk vows to Parthiban that he would make Vikraman fulfill his dream. Vikraman after growing up and falls in love with a beauty under mysterious circumstances; he later fulfills his father’s dream of an Independent Chola with Uraiyur as Capital.

A series of gripping incidents follow in the intervening period depicting extraordinary courage, deceit, loyalty, suspense and mystery.  The identity of the monk is revealed in the thrilling climax.  One cannot help marveling at the strong characterization, sequence of events and the suspense throughout the entire novel with such lucidity that simply transports us to that era.

Kalki whose real name is R.Krishnamurthi is known to the vast population of Tamil readers as a well known novelist who wrote both historic and social novels.  But he has to his credit novels, short stories, travelogues, biographies and essays contributing to all many types of Tamil literature.

He has brought a breath of fresh air into Tamil literary scene with his ability to infuse our social life and culture of our country in his characters and events, with realism. He was gifted with writing natural humour flowing through his writings making readers enjoy his writings and read them again and again. Being a patriot himself, he was able to portray patriotic fervor in his characters.

Kalki’s novels Thiaga Boomi, Magudapathi, Apalayin Kannir, Alasi Osai, Devakiyin Kanavan, Kalvanin Kadhali etc. and many more appeared as serial stories and later were published as books. It will not be an exaggeration to say that Kalki was the pioneer of historical novels in Tamil.

Vasantha

I have been avid reader of Tamil Novels and Stories and most types of Tamil literature. I had the opportunity to read and enjoy the works of legendary writers in the Tamil literary scene in the sixties and seventies. I have enjoyed the variety of style, themes, depiction of society and culture and the narration by different authors form the reader’s point of view. You can download and read ‘Parthiban Kanavu’ now from Sangapalagai.com.

Tamil Short Stories

Sunday, September 21st, 2008

The short story format originated from Europe. The Tamil world believes that the short stories in Tamil can be traced back to the seventeenth century to ‘Paramartha Kurunkathai’ a transition from the classical Tamil poetry. V.V.S. Iyer started a new trend in the 1880s giving the short stories its profound form.

Pudumaipithan started the next stage of Tamil short stories and many other writers came out with brilliant stories in Tamil. Pudumaipithan, Ku.Pa. Ra and P.S.Ramaiya and their contemporaries have written many stories that is today popular format with the Tamil literary circles and readers as the short story format.

Pudumaipithan

Pudumaipithan’s stories carried messages for the society. His sincerely expressed his concern for the society and depicted the misery as well as drama in our lives. He wrote about the human relationships, their aspirations and life in general looked at closely. His ‘Ponnagaram’ was considered beyond the grasp of readers. He dealt with a wide array of subjects in his stories while also experimenting with the art of story telling. His writing included sarcasm and wit and the stories appeared natural and realistic. The examples like ‘Kodukkapuli Maram’ and ‘Naasakkaara Gumbal’ bring out the above qualities of his writing. He has deftly used the dialects of Madras or Tirunelveli in his stories as appropriate. His writings reflected the influence of foreign writers like Maupassant, Nathaniel Hawthorne and others in the western world. He has penned over 150 short stories in Tamil.

T.Janakiraman

T.Janakiraman’s short stories brought the vagaries in the lives of people wonderfully and people could identify them with the characters.

Jayakanthan

Jayakanthan had written many outstanding stories some of which went on to be filmed later on. Most of his stories were published by Ananda Vikatan. While working in the office of ‘Janasakthi’ he developed a liking for Tamil literature and writing in Tamil. His stories were mostly about the people from the people living in the slums or extremely poor people.

N.Pichamoorthy

N.Pichamoorthy is a well known writer of Tamil short stories. ‘Mannasai’ is one of his popular short stories.

Sujatha

Sujatha is the pen name of S.Rangarajan who has written over 100 Tamil novels and 250 short stories in Tamil. His style of writing earned him a wide readership. His science fiction is said to be a pioneering work in Tamil. He could unravel science in his own inimitable simple words that can be understood by all. ‘Aathma’ is a short story which is a thrilling narration of a day in a computer engineer’s life. Suri had made the computer the ability to predict the future giving it a set of rules that can observe the planetary positions. To test its efficacy he gives his birth details and the computer instantly gives the output on the screen. That turns out to be his death sentence, in a way. He was going to die that same night exactly at 23:11:59. So healthy and full of life, he could not believe it and does random checks in hurry. The story ends with the arrival of the inevitable moment. Sujatha’s stories were published in popular Tamil magazines like Kumudam, Ananda Vikatan and Kalki.

Home Theater Solutions, Fix The Tape And DVD Storage Problem

Tuesday, September 9th, 2008

Afraid of loosing valuable living space to a mountain of DVDs or VCRs? Hanging on to your expensive, low resolution VCR because it’s the only way to keep a record of a once-in-a-lifetime, not  to be missed documentary you’ve only heard about before?  The digital age has finally offered up some solutions for the home theater system in the forms of satellite TV receivers and media centers.

How much storage space is dedicated to holding your DVDs and video tapes? If you are anything like me then you’ve got whole bookcases and cupboards full of them. They’re taking over my house and what’s worse is that I’ve now got two (and sometimes three) copies of the same movie.

Another problem I have is the television has disappeared from my life as a source for entertainment. Sure I watch the odd show occasionally on my home theater system but it wasn’t so long ago that I recorded movies and shows to watch again and the networks provided 99% of my entertainment needs. Thanks to the DVD that’s now an impossibility and I’m reduced to buying whole series of dramas or sitcoms just to watch my favorite one.

So what are satellite TV receivers and media centers, where can you find them in the home theatre and how can they solve this problem?

The satellite TV receiver is a little box that sits on top of the TV or computer which receives DVBT/ATSC signals and puts them on your screen.

Satellite TV receivers most resemble VCRs in that they are able to store tv shows for later viewing. The most famous of these is the TiVO system.

Satellite TV receivers, or DVB S receivers do remove the problematic and bulky video cassette from the home theater system but that isn’t their biggest benefit.

Satellite receivers can very easily be programmed to record anything at odd hours on a continuing basis (anybody ever successfully program their VCR please let me know) and will automatically fast forward through ad breaks.

Some units, like Chinavasion’s satellite TV receiver even include child locks to help parents make sure their children watch only suitable programs.

Media centers, or hard disk media players as they are sometimes called, are just a hard disk (like the one used in your computer) used to store photos, movies and songs rather than documents.

Because everything goes onto a disk it means that you are able to fit almost all of your VCR/DVD collection onto one small unit, freeing up space in the house.

Some units, like the Apple TV and Chinavasion’s HD wireless media center hard disk with WiFi and PC connection also act as wireless media centers (a hybrid between media servers and media centers) where it doesn’t only store material on its hard drive but it gives you access to your computer as well.

Again Chinavasion has got a good model. The HD wireless media center hard disk with WiFi and PC connection extends its versatility by playing 11 digital video formats, multiple audio and picture codecs as well as having a host of inputs to make sure it can be used with any home theater system.

Bringing the home theater into the digital age is as easy as hooking a few boxes to your system, which doesn’t need to be hard if you’re using UPnP and wireless network streaming.

And with Chinavasion’s range of affordable digital TV options you can be sure that your home theater system is up-to-date in the 21st century even if some of the more expensive parts aren’t.

Looking for a home theater (http://www.chinavasion.com/index.php/cName/home-audio-video-projectors-home-theater ) that blows your mind without breaking the bank? Visit http://www.chinavasion.com for great Western electronics at China prices.

Love Sac Invention

Saturday, September 6th, 2008

The invention of Love Sac starts from David Nelson’s huge Sac. He was seven feet tall and took more than two weeks to stuff. He used bean bag beads, but they form a mess. They were not soft and the comfort level was not so high. He then tried everything he can use to fill it with. He tried peanuts, pillows, paper cutters and yellow camping mattresses. But he found that they all were not comfortable then he tried foams and found tremendous results. Now he has to give a name for his Sac. He combined the Sac with a ‘bag’ which leads to the invention of a totally new concept. He called it Love sac.

He was able to use this Sac everywhere. It was suitable for parties and drive-in movies. He became known as “the kid with the big Sac” The popularity of love sac spread like a gossip in a very small town, and now the neighbors and friends were keen to have their own Sac. Thus the response was quite amazing.

Covers are used for the packaging of love sac. These covers are made from the softest, most durable and stain-resistant fabrics known to us. You can use a variety of colors for different occasions . You can Use Ultra Cord for the beach. , Micro suede for a dinner party and Fur for any special occasion. Covers are removable, interchangeable, and washable.

There are wide range of Love sac available in the market. A few of them are:

1. The Super Sac: It is Love Sac’s most popular Sac. Measuring 6′ across, it provides massive seating for one or comfortable seating for two or more. Super Sacs are extremely big in size.
These Sacs are made up of double-over lock stitched Khaki polyester provided with locking zipper pulls .They are filled with dura foams These Sacs can shrunken down to 1/6th their original volume for easy shipping and then re-expand to their natural fluffiness. Dura foam is a unique blend of high, medium and low-density open-cell polyurethane foam to provide the most comfortable sitting experience. This material is hypoallergenic, causing no latex allergies.

2. Movie Sac: It is 5′ in diameter and is contains shredded Durafoam. It is available in wide range of fabrics.

3. Kid sac: These are generally 2.5′ in diameter filled with shredded Durafoam and are suitable for a single child sitting.

Bean bag Shortcomings

Saturday, September 6th, 2008

There are a variety of seating devices available in the market. But the best known in comfort is a bean bag. It is generally constructed with a bunch of flexible material combined together to form an enclosure which are then filled with foam styrene beads of similar pellets. The size of the bean bag is constructed large enough large to become a seating unit. The pellets posses the property of flowing like a fluid when subjected to the weight of a person sitting on a bean bag. So when a person sits on a partially filled bean bag the pellets flow out of the volume of the space displaced by the person body. Because of this displacement the pellets reshuffles to provide support to the body of sitter. Thus the comfort level is very similar to water and air bags. The main advantage associated with bean bags are

Portability: the bean bags are easy to pack and therefore they can be moved easily from one place to another such as from home to office.

Size: The size of the bean bags is adjustable so they are easy to manage.

Price: Bean bags are very cheap.

But like all other things bean bags has its limitations too. The main disadvantage associated with it is that these are generally placed on ground or floor which requires the sitter to bend down towards it. But the handicapped and people of older age group lacks the strength to get into and out of the bean bag. The other disadvantage includes thinking of people about bean bags. Some people thinks that they will look awkward and ugly getting in and out of bean bag. Another problem is generally associated with women. They find it very hard to sit and get out of beanbags unless they are wearing slacks.

To meet with all of these shortcomings the formation principle of bean bags have been changed. The idea behind the new principle is to construct the bag in such a way that it can be positioned above the floor or ground beyond normal level of sitting. The concept has been framed to give comfort to people of all age groups and broaden the utilities of bean bags.

Now a days a base is provided with bean bags to raise them of the floor beyond the normal sitting level. This base is generally of plastic material.

<p>Women find it very difficult to sit on <a href=”http://www.chillsac.com/home.html”>Bean bag</a> Because of their wearing styles which does not matches with Beanbag. <a href=”http://www.chillsac.com/home.html”>Love Sac</a> company is trying to remove such limitations. </p>

Bean Bag Chair

Saturday, September 6th, 2008

To overcome the disadvantages associated with conventional bean bags a new form has been designed. It is given name “The Bean Bag Chairs”. The idea behind is that like conventional bean bag assembly it is provided with a rigid plastic base to keep it above the ground.

The need of Bean bag chairs arises because there occurs a frequent lose in the flexible material of the bags called pellets because of which the bean bag collapses. The bean bag chairs is a combination of the older bags and a supporting structure to elevate the bag above the floor level. The new material which is used in these chairs fulfill the ‘fill’ property of bags. The supporting structure typically comprises of a particular metal , wood or plastic circumferential rim which is affixed or removably attached to one or more base members..The rim is adjusted in such a way to provide support to the rear end of the bag. The diameter chosen for the chair is less than that of the bag to provide it additional support. When a person sits on it the pellets displaces generally in the upward direction to provide vertical support which enhances the comfort level. The straps from the rim are suspended in outward direction to provide additional support.

The present day bean bag chairs hold the capacity to provide extra comfort in aquatic as well as outdoor environment. These bags have long life which means that they does not get damaged when comes in the contact of of sunrays, heat, salt, wind and water. The outdoor bean bag cover is made from a water proof material. This cover is half filled with pellets which is almost same to the procedure used in traditional bean bags. The covers specialty lies in its flexibility. It acquires a closed volume when a person sits on it to offer resistance to that persons weight. Due to this property bean bag chairs are difficult to break.

Generally the choice of fabric is based upon the conditions, situations and environment. But nylon fabric is more preferred because the quantity of pellets required to fill these bags are very less which helps in attaining extra comfort level which is not possible with old day bean bags. The woven nylon cover also allows water to flow inside the bean-bag when it is used in an aquatic environment. The water ultimately gets evaporated when the cover is removed from that environment.

<p><a href=”http://www.chillsac.com/home.html”>Beanbags</a> comes with a lot of accessories such as pillow , cushions, covers etc. What a gift from <a href=”http://www.chillsac.com/home.html”>Love sack</a> ? </p>

Know Everything about the Valuable Pearls

Saturday, July 19th, 2008

A pearl is a hard object that is produced within the soft tissues of a living mollusk. A pearl is composed of calcium carbonate in small crystalline form, which gets deposited on a piece of grit or other foreign materials.

Pearls are called organic gems as they are formed inside the living bodies. The creation of a pearl starts when a piece of grit or other foreign particle enters into the shell of a marine or fresh water mollusk such as, clams and oysters. Thereafter, layers of a substance called nacre get deposited on the grit. This further culminates into the formation of a pearl.

Pearls come in different colors such as white, blue, red, salmon pink, green, brown and tinge of yellow on black. Pearl is also called the queen of sea. The ideal pearl is perfectly round and smooth. Pearls are categorized into different types as per their shapes and origins.

The Shapes

Baroque pearls are irregular in shape. These pearls are not preferred much as gems in the jewelry. Hence, the cost of these pearls is less as compared to other types of pearls. However, irregular shapes give these pearls a unique look.

Spherical pearls are the most wanted variety of pearls. They are expensive and their prices vary depending upon the quality of the curve of their surface.

Symmetrical pearls are pear shaped pearls. Pearls that have symmetrical sides also belong to this category.

Natural or Cultured

Natural pearls are formed when a foreign particle accidentally intrudes inside the shell of a mollusk and several layers of nacre grow like onion skins around the particle. Natural pearls vary in shape depending on the shapes of the grits wearing the coats of nacre. They could be either Saltwater Pearls or Freshwater Pearls. These pearls are rare and hence quite expensive. They are called vintage pearls in the market.

Cultured Pearls are cultured inside the mollusk artificially. An object is placed inside the shell after opening it. The object gets coated with several layers of nacre. The depth of coating of nacre depends on the kind of mollusk used. It also depends on the quality of water in which mollusk lives and the time span of the process of culture. The quality and the durability of the cultured pearls depend upon the thickness of nacre coating. Cultured pearls can be differentiated from the natural pearls with the help of X-rays.

Saltwater Pearls are found in the mollusks living in salt water. These pearls can also be cultured. Freshwater Pearls grow inside the mollusks found in the fresh water of rivers or lakes.

Pearls look elegant and every piece of pearl unfolds the unique method of nature to create.

You have an amazing thing in your hand today the mobile phone or cell phone. Gone are the days when communication was so important and one would have to approach physically to a place to attend the call or to call somebody. Now it has become a part of your body you cannot take it away from you or it doesn’t leave you! And we don’t understand why it got over us more than the idiot box. There are few facts, which I charted out, why you love your cell phone more than the present gadgets? It is because it connects you to your peer instantly, but there are some times you couldn’t so please don’t bang it, its not your receiver phone okay. It can be used even in crises. A lot of people were saved sending SOS message and were saved by the authorities.

Apart from communication it is now an all in one gadget. You can use it in dark because it has a screen with light so kind of torchlight. A time pass because it has games to keep you gripped, few lost their interview calls as they were too much engrossed in the game.

A FM radio for anytime music and people have watched your skills and a few might have corrected your steps with the music on.

The ring tones, the message passing ring tones, which you always wanted to convey to someone in your range its like making them know your attitude or what’s in your heart.

If you cannot reach someone or you don’t want to talk with someone you just message them SMS facility.

The features like camera and video recording has added your hobby to go beyond your limits. Now you don’t have to run, open the cupboard, take out the camera just to catch that moment of your toddlers first step. Well its just handy today, in your pocket.

The one of the amazing thing about the cell phone is connecting your phone to the system be it laptop or desktop. They come with necessary accessories to connect your phone to computer. There are different modes to connect one of them is Bluetooth which connects your phone to your system wirelessly, no wires are involved to connect, but it is slower so don’t get annoyed. With this method you can transfer data such as pictures, which you have taken and you can delete which you don’t like, add few from the system to the cell phone, music in mp3 format, songs, and a whole lot of things.

The other method is through data cable, which plugs into your phone and the computer’s USB port and this sometimes works as a recharger to your phone while plugged in. These connections requires some softwares which are provided either by company website or sold by the vendor.

Getting a mobile phone is so simple just connect to the internet and search for a site some sites have fabulous offers, I always prefer online-couponcodes.com for my online shopping, and get your brand and type of phone you want with discount coupons.

Today, cell phone is not just a phone it is a whole computer in hand, getting the latest cell phone would be my advise because it comes with so many advanced features to turn heads towards you, apart from what I mentioned above.

Excalibur Swords, Awesome Power, Legendary Beauty, Lasting Appeal

Friday, June 27th, 2008

Excalibur – the famous “Sword in the Stone” Take a moment and let your mind’s eye picture the images those words evoke. No sword, real or mythical, is more renowned, more beloved, than Excalibur. There is one simple reason, Excalibur is intimately associated with the myths, legends and romance surrounding King Arthur, Camelot, and the Knights of the Round Table.

According to legend, Excalibur was a mysterious sword with magical powers, sometimes blinding Arthur’s foes with a blazing-bright light. As legend has it, Arthur became the rightful king of Britain because, even though many others tried, he was the only man able to pull Excalibur out of the stone. Alternate legends say that Arthur received Excalibur from the Lady of the Lake after he broke his first sword, Caliburn. Either way, Excalibur was a magical sword with awesome power and legendary beauty.

No one knows if King Arthur is an actual historical figure, if he actually wielded Excalibur, or if the entire story is merely an entertaining myth. But everyone knows the lore of Excalibur and its royal owner. And the epic film “Camelot” enhanced the mystique and appeal of this famous sword, whetting peoples’ desire to have an Excalibur Sword for themselves.

The Modern Excalibur Sword.

The modern Excalibur Sword was born out of legend, out of mystique, out of the mists of the past. “Movie swords” such as replica Excalibur Swords are extremely popular with film buffs and with people who have an affinity for the history and lore of the Middle Ages. They are also sought-after by people who love historical fiction and fantasy books such as the Arthurian novel “The Once and Future King.” One look at an Excalibur Sword will easily evoke images of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table.

Excalibur Swords are very collectible and can be a bold addition to a home’s decor. And Medieval tournament re-enactments have become very popular. An Excalibur Sword worn by a man attending a Medieval re-enactment would be the perfect complement to a period costume from that era.

Elegant Yet Powerful.

Usually double-handed, there are several varieties of the Excalibur Sword. All are beautiful, and all evoke the pageantry and glory of long ago, heroic times. Some Excalibur Swords have leather-wrapped hilts and rough leather or wood scabbards or sheaths. Other Excalibur Swords have chrome-plated steel hilts and blades. Still others have solid silver or brass hilts and polished stainless steel blades. Some have hilts that have been etched with the traditional triple crown design of King Arthur. And some have precious or semi-precious gems and jewels inlaid or set into the hilt. But no matter what metal is used for the sword, and no matter how ornately or simply decorated, the design always harkens back to those that were used when King Arthur and his knights lived and died so valiantly. And to magic and mystery.

Military Rings And What They Signify

Tuesday, June 10th, 2008

Military Rings are worn by current and retired members of the military as a highly visible demonstration of their proud participation in a branch of service. Their appeal supersedes distinctions of rank, gender and age: military rings are worn by officers and enlisted personnel, men and women, and the young and old.

Every day, men and women in the military protect us and our freedom. The sacrifices they make during the course of their service – to their country and to us – are countless and sometimes extreme. We honor them for their service in the armed forces and for their selfless dedication. And they are justifiably proud of their efforts and military traditions. There is no better way for them to show their pride than a military ring -a visual symbol of their service that is typically is worn every single day. Military rings reflect their strength of character and their commitment to protect us all. In short, a military ring is a uniquely appropriate way to reflect a person’s service in the armed forces, either past or present.

Military Rings Have Deeply Symbolic Designs.

There are three basic types of military rings. At least one of them would appeal to almost any member of the military.

1. One design that is frequently used is somewhat ornate, resembling a school ring or class ring. These types of military rings usually have a large semi-precious gem, crystal or colored stone set in the center. They also have several different emblems and insignia engraved partway down the sides of the band on each side of the central stone.

2. A second type of design is much different. A military ring of this type is a more streamlined ring with flowing, “clean” lines. This design sometimes consists solely of precious metal which has been engraved only at the top of the ring. Other times a semi-precious gem, crystal or other stone is set into the center. The sides of the band of this type of ring typically are not decorated, and the ring has a strong, masculine appearance.

3. The third type of military ring is similar to a traditional-type family signet ring or seal ring. But instead of a family seal or crest, this type of military ring utilizes military coats of arms or insignia as the “seal” at the top of the ring. There is no center gem or stone with this design.

Options for Military Rings.

Any of these three basic designs can incorporate one or more of the specific, highly symbolic heraldic-type crests, shields, coats-of-arms or insignia that are frequently used in the military. A military ring can be designed to reflect a person’s service in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps or Coast Guard. Or it can demonstrate service in a specific division, regiment, battalion, fleet, or other discrete military or naval unit. Military rings can also be designed to show that a person served in the armed forces during a particular war or armed conflict: World War 2 rings, Korean War rings, Vietnam War rings and Operation Desert Storm rings are all examples of this type of military ring. Still other types of military rings incorporate the design of a specific combat medal or badge, or a specific rank insignia, into their design. Military rings even exist for ex-Prisoners of War. A military ring can be further personalized by engraving on the band the initials or name of the person wearing it.

They are usually made of precious metals such as gold, silver or platinum, and the engraving on high-quality pieces features intricate detail. If a military crest, coat of arms or other military heraldic device has been enhanced by being enameled, or if the center of the ring is inset with a colored gemstone, a military ring is quite striking. But no matter which design is used, a military ring signifies selfless service to us all.

The Freshwater Pearls The Grading Of Akoya Pearl

Sunday, June 1st, 2008

Pearls , which are grown from fresh water mussels in bays, lakes and rivers, are known as freshwater pearls . The largest producer of freshwater pearls in the world is China and next follows Japan and United States . The first freshwater cultured pearl farming was executed in U.S by John Latendresse in 1963 in Teneesse.

There are 20 different species from the family called ‘Unionidae’ of fresh water pearls, which are harvested for commercial purpose every year. Up to 40 to 50 pearls are produced from a single mussel.

Freshwater pearls have different shapes. The shapes of cultured pearls are determined by the quality of water, as well as, the shape of nucleus and its position in the mussel. You would find beautiful Freshwater pearls, which are round in shape and have a high lustrous quality.

Freshwater pearls are cheaper in cost and also have less quality than salt water cultured pearls due to its unique shape, size and color. However, high qualities pearls are round in shape and also are as good as salt-water cultured pearls. There are many color varieties of freshwater pearl such as pink, white, cream and black etc. Among them, white color pearl is the most common pearl and expensive whereas black pearl is gaining its popularity in the field of fashion and design.

Moreover, white pearl though, expensive are considered as classic and traditional whereas black pearls with its deep color are considered as dramatically modern. Some of the factors that result in freshwater pearls to have different types of color are the quality of water and the position of the shell in the mussel. Some pearls are artificially dyed in different colors with the development in the field of fashions and styles.

High quality freshwater pearls are no doubt rare, exotic and flawless in their construction. With its luster, shine and shape like a saltwater pearl, freshwater pearls have a distinguishing character rarely found in any other cultured pearls.

One can find these pearls sold in the market under different brand names. There are various extra ordinary developments happening in the pearl market these days. Freshwater pearls have changed their stature incredibly in fashions and designs. They never wear out of time, as they are truly cultured and composed solidly of nacre in freshwater mussel.

The Grading Of Akoya Pearl

Sunday, June 1st, 2008

Akoya pearl was largely harvested, for the first time in Japan , in a place called Ago bay in 1916. These pearls are quite different from any other indigenous pearls. These pearls were cultured and created by a method known as grafting. This culturing method creates pearls in such a way that a small bead was placed in the reproductive organ of the host oyster with a small tissue of donor mantle. Gradually, the pearls are formed inside the oyster due to the catalyst reaction of the pearl sac and the deposition of nacre.

These days Akoya pearls are famous for its distinguishing facts and are found at most of the jewelry shops around the world. Akoya Pearl bracelet has also become one of the women’s favorite jewelry and has got a place in every woman’s jewelry collection. Akoya pearls are perfectly round in shape and have high luster quality, which aids it in being perfect for making a pearl bracelet . Moreover, its distinguishing white body color makes it known worldwide.

Here are some distinguishing factors that make Akoya pearls famous in the world.

Size : Akoya pearls are relatively small in size with an average diameter of 7mm. Most size of the Akoya pearls falls in between 3mm to as large as 10 mm. larger sizes of Akoya pearls are more valuable than the smaller ones.

Shape : Due to the perfectly spherical bead planted into the reproductive organ of the host oyster and the gradual deposition of nacre makes most Akoya production, round in shape. This is one of the significant characters of Akoya pearl, as round shapes are considered more valuable.

Luster : Akoya pearls have a very sharp luster and their surface looks like a mirror. High luster is one of the important choices while buying a pearl. Hence, this high luster makes akoya more valuable and expensive.

Nacre thickness : The nacre thickness of akoya is comparatively good. But short culture akoya pearls have thin nacre as they have been harvested very early and do not have sufficient deposition of nacre into the pearl mother bead. Thus, these low quality Akoya pearls are cheap and doesn’t have the metallic shine.

Surface : Cultured pearls do not need to be cut nor polished to show off their beauty as they are produced organically. They are very unique and exhibit different types of characteristics.

Origin : It was believed that akoya pearls produced in Japan have the finest quality and value. But these days, China , South Korea and Australia also produce Akoya pearl with thicker nacre.

Emerging engagement ring trends blend tradition with modern flair

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

The diamond engagement rings – a timeless expression of love and commitment.

The classic styles available – solitaire and pave, for example – still are popular today, but there are emerging trends of which you, the potential buyer should be aware.

Note: One thing that never changes is what grooms tend to pay for engagement rings – quite a bit! Latest statistics show the average amount spent is $3,000, according to these sources:

” $3,044 (Bride’s Millenium Report)
” $2,982 (Bride’s Magazine)
” $2,909 (Modern Bride, as cited in Weddings for Dummies)
” $3,576 (Conde Nast Bridal Group)
” $3,165 (Modern Bride Magazine)
” $2,807 (National Bride Service)

Hot ring trends – classic, antique and modern lead the way

For example, classic solitaires are very popular. Many women are choosing a classic-cut diamond solitaire. These are assured of never going out of style and make good heirloom pieces.

However, a traditional solitaire setting is upswept and raises the diamond high. Some people today select settings where the center stone sits low, creating a look that is elegant and ergonomic. Another popular setting is one that is intricately raised, as well as twisted band.

And while the round cut continues to be popular, it is becoming more common to see the oval cut, as well as the emerald.

The pave setting, where the band is studded with diamonds seamlessly, is elegant and is becoming more popular. The idea is that smaller stones are set so close together that no metal can be seen between them. This maximizes the wattage of the ring without pushing the cost too high.

Antique, vintage rings that your grandmother might have worn also are trendy, which combines an historical, period look with current fashion. Look for gold filigree settings, floral accents and gemstone baguettes. The cuts typically are cushion, round, pillow and Asscher , and their larger facets radiate more fire under less light.

Also becoming more popular are modern styles. This type features clean, streamlined designs for a cosmopolitan, chic look. The most contemporary styles feature a bezel-set and designs where the diamond seems to “float,” which is a type of tension setting.

engagement rings with colored stones also are an emerging trend, with colored diamonds being quite the rage. Many celebrities, such as Jennifer Lopez, have chosen colored diamond engagement rings and this has cemented their popularity.

For something different, consider new diamond cuts on the market. The Zales diamond cut has more facets than traditional cuts and can increase the stone’s fire. Also consider the princess cut – a modified square.

Platinum – hands down the choice today

Regarding the ring itself, platinum is definitely the hot trend. Platinum is popular because its rich luster sets off the brilliance of a diamond like no other metal. This metal is naturally white and will always keep its shine, unlike yellow gold, which may tarnish. Platinum is the strongest precious metal, and is twice as heavy as most gold alloy rings.
Some women want their platinum ring carved with designs or inlaid with gemstones.
