Keeping in touch with beauty and fashion during your wedding trip.

Monday, April 7th, 2008

If you’re getting married overseas, there are a few extra considerations when it comes to looking good. It’s time to start planning your ‘princess for the day’ look!

Your wedding attire
There are two main considerations when planning your outfit for a wedding abroad. You need to find something that you will be comfortable wearing, especially if you’re getting married in the sunshine, and you also need to choose something that you can transport relatively easily.

If the temperature on your wedding day is likely to be very cool, a ‘floaty’ beach dress probably isn’t the perfect choice. Look for something that will suit the environment - more of a traditional ball gown-style wedding gown, for example. Equally, consider accessories such as shoes. Pretty beach sandals aren’t the thing for walking around the castle grounds. Instead consider a high heel shoe.

What you wear for your wedding is entirely up to you and there are no real dress rules if you are marrying in the grounds of your hotel. However, if you have arranged for a religious service in a chapel or church you will most likely be expected to respect local custom and cover your head and shoulders. Also in some Eastern countries, such as Thailand there is a specific dress code. Your wedding coordinator or the relevant embassy will advise you.

Transporting and caring for your outfits
When you choose your perfect dress, speak to the designer or store about how best to transport it. It may pack well with plenty of tissue paper, or could be better kept in a dress bag.

Check with your airline for advice on transporting your wedding outfits. Some recommend that they should be boxed or packed into separate suitcases. They will then be placed into the hold. Others suggest that you use suit carriers and, space permitting, they will be hung in the cabin of the aircraft. Outfits can always be carried as hand luggage but this will restrict you to keeping the rest of your hand luggage to a minimum.

As soon as you arrive at your hotel, unpack your wedding outfits and hang them up. A warm and humid tropical climate should allow creases to fall out naturally. However, your hotel or your wedding coordinator can normally arrange for your outfits to be steamed if necessary. Alternatively, hang clothes in a steam-filled bathroom which will help the creases drop out.

Hair and beauty
Hair and beauty treatments can be arranged when you arrive at your hotel, or you might even decide to book things before you arrive. If your hotel does not have these facilities, ask whether there is somewhere you can visit nearby. For total peace of mind, practice styling your own hair and make-up before setting off.

You’re likely to want to have a healthy tan on your wedding day, but basking in the sun before the wedding isn’t a good idea. As well as damaging your skin, you run the risk of looking more like a lobster than a sun-kissed bride. Pace you’re sunbathing on the run-up to your wedding or help nature along with a good quality fake tan. If you’re doing your own fake tan, be sure to practice well in advance.

Epidural Analgesia-Pregnancy

Thursday, March 6th, 2008

Many women find the pain of labor too intense to bear without effective pain relief, and an epidural analgesia provides the best pain relief compared to all other methods. In the US, more than 80 percent of first-time moms ultimately have an epidural analgesia, other take a wait and see attitude.

How It Works

Epidural analgesia works by delivering very small doses of an anesthetic through a hollow tube to the epidural space, which surrounds the spinal cord. The anesthetic numbs nerves from the waist down, including the uterus. Epidurals are given by an anesthetist. You will have to bend forward so that he or she can guide the hollow tube through a needle and in to the correct position. You will have a local anesthetic first, which may sting a little, but other than that you shouldn’t feel any pain as the epidural is placed. Once the tube is in position, it is taped to your back to secure it so that more anesthetic can be given easily at any time.

An epidural takes about 20 minutes to administer. Most women notice pain is reduced almost immediately, but the full effect may take 15 to 20 minutes. The benefits of epidural analgesia are that pain control is excellent and that very little medication escapes in to your blood stream. This means that you are mentally alert, and your baby is not sleepy after birth from pain medication crossing your placenta. The other benefit of epidural analgesia is that medication is being given continuously, so you have pain relief for the entire duration of labor.

Types Of Epidural

More modern epidurals, such as the mobile epidural use the least amount of medication possible, allowing you to move your legs (but not usually walk) and to feel pressure as the baby’s head moves down the birth canal. Women who feel pressure can push more effectively, reducing the likelihood that they will need a cesarean or forceps delivery. Some hospitals allow you to control the epidural yourself by pressing a button that slowly releases more of the analgesic. Another type is the combined spinal epidural analgesia, in which a small amount of medication is injected in to the spinal space before the epidural tube is placed. This provides faster pain relief and is often used for women who are close to delivery when the epidural takes place, or when a cesarean delivery is needed.

Timing The Epidural

Many physicians will delay offering an epidural until you are 4cm dilated. However, this is an arbitrary cut off, so if your pain is very intense an early epidural is still an option. Discuss the various scenarios with your care provider before you go into labor.

Side Effects

Like all medical interventions, epidural analgesia has side effects for you and for your baby, although the chance of a serious side effect is very small.

Longer Labor

Most studies of epidural analgesia suggest that contractions are weakened, which means there’s more chance that you will need oxytocin to return your contractions to their normal strength. On average, choosing epidural analgesia will prolong the active phase of labor by about one hour. Epidural analgesia can also prolong the pushing stage of labor by up to an hour. Since the pushing stage is often exhausting, an epidural can make it more likely that your care provider will suggest a forceps delivery.

Increased Use Of Forceps

Epidural analgesia decreases your ability to push effectively and approximately doubles the chances that you will have a forceps or vacuum assisted delivery. Asking for your epidural analgesia to be turned down before you start to push may increase your chances of being able to push effectively and avoid a forceps delivery.

Fever

Choosing epidural analgesia quadruples your risk of developing a fever during labor. Although most experts don’t believe the fever is related to infection, you may end up being given antibiotics during labor. The longer you have the epidural, the more likely you are to have a fever.

Inadequate Pain Control

About 9-15 percent of women still have significant pain despite epidural analgesia. While this can sometimes be treated by giving additional medication, or by replacing the epidural catheter, pain control cannot be achieved in all women.

Itching

Up to 26 percent of women with epidural analgesia will have itching, which is usually treated with IV medication.

Rare Side Effects

There is a small risk that the anesthetist may puncture the sac covering the spinal cord, causing spinal fluid to leak out. This can result in a severe headache that may be difficult to treat.

Myths About Epidural Analgesia

One of the big myths about epidural analgesia is that it is responsible for chronic back pain. But studies have found instead that pregnancy it self is responsible for back pain. Women who have back pain during pregnancy are more likely to have back pain after they have delivered. While you may have a sore spot and a small bruise on your back after epidural analgesia, choosing epidural analgesia does not place you at higher risk for long term back pain. A second popular myth is that it will affect your ability to breastfeed. However, most studies have not found that epidural analgesia affects ultimate breastfeeding success. Your baby is much more likely to be sedated after large doses of narcotics given by injection, than from the small amount of narcotics used in epidural analgesia.

What is the Difference Between a Certification and an Appraisal?
A certification is a survey of your gem that defines or grades certain features or qualities with internationally recognized values. These features are often known by the 4C acronym. An appraisal is a valuation or market price based on this specification.

What Guarantee Does a Certification Give Me?

There are numerous laboratories for certification. Two of the main ones are the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and the European Gemological Institute. Here at Diamond Doctor we use the GIA exclusively, because that is the Gold Standard in the industry. Yes, they are more conservative. Often by quite a large margin, and thats because they are a totally independent, non-profit laboratory staffed by 900 of the worlds leading diamond graders, scientists and educators, all with a mission to ensure the public trust in gems and jewelry.

The GIA is the creator of the famous 4Cs of diamond value (color, clarity, cut and carat weight) and the birthplace of the International Diamond Grading System, now used as the industry standard. The GIA have graded all of the worlds renowned stones including: The Hope Diamond (45.52 carats), the Taylor-Burton Diamond (69.42), the Alnatt (101.29 carats), the De Beers Millennium Star (203.85 carats), the Centenary Diamond (273.85 carats) and the Incomparable Diamond (407.78 carats). The GIA is also where the White House and the Congress go for definitive answers. It is where the textbooks on diamonds are written.

The EGL on the other hand is partly funded by the European jewelry industry and in our opinion, is not as professional, reliable or accurate as the GIA. Even though the EGL consistently gives higher grades for the same stones and would therefore make our sales price seem more attractive, we are more interested in providing you the equivalent of a Supreme Court ruling on your purchase.A certification is a virtual specification.

What is Certification?
Certified diamonds have been examined by independent experts and had their quality assessed and graded for, among other attributes, color, clarity and cut. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and the European Gemological Institute (EGL) are the two main recognized institutions that perform this work. We at DiamondDoctor.com use GIA exclusively and have noted the reasons above under What guarantee does certification and a valuation give me?

Types of Diamonds

There are many different types of diamonds or diamond shapes. You get faceted diamonds which include Round diamonds, Square( princess cut diamonds) Radiant cut diamonds(which are square diamonds with cut corners), oval diamonds , cushion cut diamonds, and marquise and pear shape diamonds. Then you have the step cut diamonds which are diamonds that you can see through, these include Emerald cut and Asscher cut diamonds.

You should only ever purchase a genuine diamond that has grown naturally form the earth, never buy a man made diamond they are cheap and worthless with no demand at all. Some people try and sell clarity enhanced diamonds, you are better off purchasing a Cubic Zirconia than a clarity enhanced diamond, they are virtually worthless.

Diamonds that you purchase for an engagement ring should be certified or graded by an authority independent from the company you are purchasing from, be very sure to only purchase a GIA certified diamond, GIA only. Do not get fooled by other grading certificates you are being taken for a ride if you purchase anything other than GIA.
How to Buy an Engagement Ring?

You must first establish that the company that you are working with is a true wholesaler and that they sell only GIA certified diamonds.

Certification is very very important, if you are not buying a GIA certified diamond rather donot purchase a diamond at all. The GIA or Gemological Institute of America, sets the grading standards for diamonds worldwide and only true wholesalers sell GIA certified diamonds. Tiffanys only sell GIA certified diamonds, so the trick is to find a true wholesaler that can sell you a GIA diamond at a fraction of Tiffanys prices.

Search on the internet under Google and type in diamond wholesaler in your area, once you have found some companies check their better business bearu ratings if they are not part of the BBB then stay away. Call the company and ask them to give you diamond prices over the telephone, if they donot then do not even consider going to them. Ask them if they have a no questions ask money back guarantee and a lifetime trade up policy of equal or greater value(if they say no, you need to spend more money to upgrade, then do not go to them).

Do not let a salesperson pressure you into purchasing EGL or IGI or AIG or GCal diamonds you need to buy GIA only, you must look at six or more GIA certified diamond side by side before you decide on which diamond to purchase, otherwise you can be assured that you are being taken advantage of.

Extramarital online dating is now becoming part of the mainstream dating scene

Wednesday, January 9th, 2008

Scoring through the Internet, and looking for something interesting to write about, I came across this website that caters for – you guessed right, married men and women who like to embark on an affair. The site, aptly named “My Secret Affair” caught my attention and I decided to check what this was all about. So I enrolled as a member – not that I needed an affair, as I’m happily single – I just want to find out what kind of people would join such a site. The first thing I noticed while signing up was that they offer free membership for both men and women.

No sooner did I get into the member’s area, I started getting ‘virtual kisses’ by male members online – virtual kisses are messages of interest sent out by members before they try and make contact. Some even sent me messages introducing themselves and wanting to chat. I checked out their profiles and was surprised to find some of them have also inserted photos of themselves. Most of the members I checked appear to be quite normal people you may otherwise not suspect if they sat next to you in the tube. Some even run successful businesses of their own, and say they’re either looking to rekindle passion, or overcome stale partnerships by trying a different partner. Some of course, are there just to have some fun. The same with female members too – they all seem to be genuine and normal people. The site has all the features of any standard dating website, for messaging, chatting, sending kisses and adding people to your favourites etc. In addition, they also have an administrator online to help out other members online.

I got chatting to Katie, the administrator who was online at the time, she disclosed that she’s online whenever she can, shuffling between her daily duties and her 2 year old son to answer any questions members may have, or to act on any complaints. She says all member profiles are carefully reviewed before they’re allowed in to ensure they’re as authentic as possible, and that the enrolling members know what they’re getting into. Says Katie, “We go through each profile manually, so we can weed out brief, incomplete, and ‘dodgy’ profiles where men pretend to be women and vice-versa. We also make sure people don’t use the website for selling their services – we want this site to be a safe and secure place, which enable members to express themselves in complete confidentiality. We discourage some members, normally men who try to join looking just for sex. This is not a sex-dating site, and we don’t want this to become one.”

Asked why they offer free membership while similar sites charge a small fortune for the same privilege, Katie admits, “We’re offering free membership for a limited period to create interest and increase membership. Even when we do decide to start charging, it will be considerably less than what other sites charge for the same service. And we don’t intend to start charging a fee at least for the next 3 months.” I apologised for joining the site, wished her good luck and asked if I could check back again to see how it worked out – so, watch this space. This site is only for the residents of UK.

Their website can be visited at www.mysecretaffair.com.
