Choosing a Language Learning Method

February 8th, 2008 by Xavier Media

Which method is right for you?

Here at TheLanguageStop.com we’re committed to helping you choose the best language program. Everyone has a different attention span, memory retention, needs, and goals. Learning how to speak is a different experience for each person. To help you pick which language learning instruction is right for you, here’s a little guide for the popular picks!

Berlitz focuses on phrases and words you’ll need for your travels. It’s a great bread-and-butter way to pick up a language so you can order in a restaurant or go sightseeing and understand what’s going on around you. It goes well with Berlitz’s famous travel guides too!

Dr. Blair is also travel oriented, but with a fun twist. Each In No Time lesson contains a mini-adventure that gets you focused on understanding the language while gradually building up a vocabulary. You will start to learn words and phrases contextually. As the lessons progress, less and less English will be used, and you’ll realize how much of your new language you’ve picked up. Of course, there are secret missions and strange occurrences that will keep you entertained while you pick up new skills.

The famous Pimsleur series was created by Dr. Paul Pimsleur, a renowned linguist whose theories on language learning have been well tested over the years. The Pimsleur Method works on the premise that adults acquire new language skills via contextualized phrases. Really what this means is that Pimsleur gets you started with phrases that are building blocks in the language. Instead of learning word-by-word, your capacity for understanding and speaking is broadened from the beginning. Pimsleur also uses multiple narrators, including Dr. Pimsleur himself, so that you can learn variations in pronunciation and tone.

Pimsleur’s instructional courses are well respected and fully developed in dozens of languages. Don’t be intimidated by the various levels of the courses. Here’s a simple guide:

-Basic contains the first 5 hours of instruction from the Comprehensive Level I.
-Compact contains a complete 5 hours of instruction, tailored for each specific language as an accelerated program.
-Conversational contains the first 8 hours of instruction from Comprehensive Level I, so you can get started speaking a language without investing in the whole package.
-Comprehensive Level I, II, or III contains 16 hours of instruction per level, so you can achieve mastery of your new language.

You will find that you can gain a whole new proficiency in a language you never thought you could learn! We here at TheLanguageStop.com want to make sure you get the right tools to help you learn your way.

The Language Stop offers a variety of language learning tools to help you start speaking in a new language.
