When I was growing up my sisters and I played games all the time. Now this was before the home video games came out and the Internet was not available to play games online. When we played games it involved actual human interaction between players and stimulated conversation (although at the time I didn’t enjoy talking to my sisters all that much) We enjoyed playing outside games such as tag and hide-n-seek and we played with our toys, but one thing that we often did on weekend afternoons if the weather was too bad to play outside was to play cards. It seems that card playing is becoming somewhat of a lost art, and that is really a shame because it was such a nice way to pass the time. Here are some of the card games that we played.

1. 500 Rummy - In this game each player is given 7 cards and the rest of the cards are placed upside down on the table with the exception of one card. The first player then drew either from the upside down deck of cards or from the one card. He then discarded one card out of his hand. The point of the game was to get either 3 or 4 of a kind or a run of 3 or more in the same suite and you would lay these down on the table. The first person out of cards won the hand and all the points were tallied from the cards on the table. The first person to reach 500 points wins.

2. War - Here is a game that my children still play from time to time. It is played with two players and the deck is split evenly between them. Each player then flips over the top card in their deck and lays it on the table. The person with the highest card takes the two of them. If it is a tie then 3 cards are placed face down and a fourth card is placed face up. The higher of the face up card takes them all. The game is won when all the cards are in one person’s hand.

So the next time you have nothing to do, why not grab a deck of cards and play a hand with someone you love. It’s a great way to pass a grey afternoon or a slow evening at home.
