Curtain Poles: Fitting Advice and Tips

May 21st, 2008 by curtainpoles

Curtain Poles Unlimited have over 20 years experience in the curtain pole trade, and are ideally positioned to provide you with any technical help and advice on products or applications.

Some common issues are as follows:

Wall space limited above the window, so the pole has to be ceiling-fixed. Ceiling-fixing is tricky, as you have to locate the joists and they may not always be quite in the right places. You also cannot use pass-over brackets (except for the Bradley collection who do one that is shaped like a treble clef)

Pole needs to be longer than standard in one piece. Most standard off the shelf curtain poles stop at 180cm (6 foot) in one piece. The only poles I have found so far which are exceptions to this are Speedy Poles Apart (too tacky) which has a 200cm pole piece, or any one of the Kirsch poles look a likes such as Copes Imperial, Integra Options or Hallis Hudson Galleria (too pricey), where the main option is in 35mm and features a 210cm in one piece.

Double-pole brackets needed to enable curtains with a voile behind. Very few of these about, and those that there are are quite poor, and are for metal poles only. Large made-to-measure poles can have brass brackets specially made to order.

Recess brackets needed because pole is going into a recess or there is no wall space to one side of the window. These are only available in certain up market ranges as standard, or can be made to order by certain manufacturers

Bay windows are a common issue, as the UK has more bays windows per capita than any other country in the world. It might be a swept bay, or an L-shaped bay with a 90 degree angle, or a top-fix bay. It is difficult to run a pole around a bay, and still no one has got it quite right, with the possible exception of Silent Gliss who do a made-to-measure track that looks like a pole, called Metropole.

Poles for eyelet curtains, which nowadays account for approx 40% of all curtains, and do not require there to be any rings on the pole,

but also require longer projection brackets

Corded poles in wood or metal are difficult to get hold of apart from expensive made to measure versions. The only off the shelf poles are Swish Polaris and Integra Finale

Unfinished wood poles that the customer wishes to paint themselves are generally available, except that the main Indonesian supplier of budget poles is having problems at the moment
