Thick Or Thin - That Is The Question about Area Rugs
February 23rd, 2008 by Xavier MediaDoes thickness matter when is comes to the quality of Oriental and Area Rugs?
Well, the short answer is NO. The thickness of most Oriental rugs has little to do with the quality, and more to do with the rug type or even style of the area rug.
Rugs from Nepal or Tibet tend to be thick because the weave is loose and doesn’t require a thin pile to increase the visual detail. The look of the rug is a heavy, substantial piece of art. Thick rugs have longer fibers which distort the design because the pile has more movement and less rigidity than a more dense, thin shaved rug. Thin rugs will show more detail of pattern, so if your design is detailed, a thinner rug may suit your needs.
In general, hand knotted rugs and hand tufted rugs will be much thicker than machine made rugs. The pile height can vary from 1/2″ to 1 1/2″.
Thinner rugs such as machine made rugs tend to be 1/4″ to 1/2″ thick. Dhurries, Soumaks, and Kelims are reversible rugs that are designed to have a thin look. These rugs are usually 1/8″ thick or less. They are made for a certain look, and less for comfort or warmth.
To truly judge the quality, you should make sure the weave fits the design, and that the density of the weave is consistent with the traffic needs of the room. Highly dense rugs tend to wear better than loosely woven rugs. The material is also of great importance. For additional information, please visit us online at http://www.rugsdoneright.com.
